    The structure of the magnetic reconnection exhaust boundary

    The structure of shocks that form at the exhaust boundaries during collisionless reconnection of anti-parallel fields is studied using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and modeling based on the anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic equations. Large-scale PIC simulations of reconnection and companion Riemann simulations of shock development demonstrate that the pressure anisotropy produced by counterstreaming ions within the exhaust prevents the development of classical Petschek switch-off-slow shocks (SSS). The shock structure that does develop is controlled by the firehose stability parameter epsilon=1-mu_0(P_parallel-P_perpendicular)/ B^2 through its influence on the speed order of the intermediate and slow waves. Here P_parallel and P_perpendicular are the pressure parallel and perpendicular to the local magnetic field. The exhaust boundary is made up of a series of two shocks and a rotational wave. The first shock takes epsilon from unity upstream to a plateau of 0.25 downstream. The condition epsilon =0.25 is special because at this value the speeds of nonlinear slow and intermediate waves are degenerate. The second slow shock leaves epsilon=0.25 unchanged but further reduces the amplitude of the reconnecting magnetic field. Finally, in the core of the exhaust epsilon drops further and the transition is completed by a rotation of the reconnecting field into the out-of-plane direction. The acceleration of the exhaust takes place across the two slow shocks but not during the final rotation. The result is that the outflow speed falls below that expected from the Walen condition based on the asymptotic magnetic field. A simple analytic expression is given for the critical value of epsilon within the exhaust below which SSSs no longer bound the reconnection outflow.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

    Measuring the delay time distribution of binary neutron stars. II. Using the redshift distribution from third-generation gravitational wave detectors network

    We investigate the ability of current and third-generation gravitational wave (GW) detectors to determine the delay time distribution (DTD) of binary neutron stars (BNS) through a direct measurement of the BNS merger rate as a function of redshift. We assume that the DTD follows a power law distribution with a slope Γ\Gamma and a minimum merger time tmint_{\rm min}, and also allow the overall BNS formation efficiency per unit stellar mass to vary. By convolving the DTD and mass efficiency with the cosmic star formation history, and then with the GW detector capabilities, we explore two relevant regimes. First, for the current generation of GW detectors, which are only sensitive to the local universe, but can lead to precise redshift determinations via the identification of electromagnetic counterparts and host galaxies, we show that the DTD parameters are strongly degenerate with the unknown mass efficiency and therefore cannot be determined uniquely. Second, for third-generation detectors such as Einstein Telescope (ET) and Cosmic Explorer (CE), which will detect BNS mergers at cosmological distances, but with a redshift uncertainty inherent to GW-only detections (δ(z)/z≈0.1z\delta(z)/z\approx 0.1z), we show that the DTD and mass efficiency can be well-constrained to better than 10\% with a year of observations. This long-term approach to determining the DTD through a direct mapping of the BNS merger redshift distribution will be supplemented by more near term studies of the DTD through the properties of BNS merger host galaxies at z≈0z\approx 0 (Safarzadeh & Berger 2019).Comment: 10 pages, Accepted to ApJ Letter

    Identification of a WNT5A-Responsive Degradation Domain in the Kinesin Superfamily Protein KIF26B.

    Noncanonical WNT pathways function independently of the β-catenin transcriptional co-activator to regulate diverse morphogenetic and pathogenic processes. Recent studies showed that noncanonical WNTs, such as WNT5A, can signal the degradation of several downstream effectors, thereby modulating these effectors' cellular activities. The protein domain(s) that mediates the WNT5A-dependent degradation response, however, has not been identified. By coupling protein mutagenesis experiments with a flow cytometry-based degradation reporter assay, we have defined a protein domain in the kinesin superfamily protein KIF26B that is essential for WNT5A-dependent degradation. We found that a human disease-causing KIF26B mutation located at a conserved amino acid within this domain compromises the ability of WNT5A to induce KIF26B degradation. Using pharmacological perturbation, we further uncovered a role of glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) in WNT5A regulation of KIF26B degradation. Lastly, based on the identification of the WNT5A-responsive domain, we developed a new reporter system that allows for efficient profiling of WNT5A-KIF26B signaling activity in both somatic and stem cells. In conclusion, our study identifies a new protein domain that mediates WNT5A-dependent degradation of KIF26B and provides a new tool for functional characterization of noncanonical WNT5A signaling in cells

    Maintenance cost studies of rotary wing commercial transport aircraft

    December 1974Includes bibliographical references (p. 121-123)Introduction: The vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft market has had substantial growth in the period of the last ten years when one considers the overall number of aircraft in use. The military fleet has continued to increase, as have such operators as natural resource (petroleum and lumber) companies, and law enforcement agencies. (See Table 1.) In scheduled passenger service, however, the VTOL- market has not enjoyed sustained growth. Consider Table 2, the type and number of helicopters in passenger service during 1962-1972. Following the cessation of federal subsidies to helicopter operators in 1966 the number of aircraft (and total available seats) has been steadily declining. Table 3 shows the composition of the fleets of the certificated carriers since 1966. Los Angeles Airways has been in bankruptcy since 1969; Chicago Helicopter is now largely a charter operator, although retaining its certificate; New York Airways, after a period of experimentation with the fixed wing Twin Otter (DHC-6) in 1968-1969, finally made it into the black in 1973, flying Sikorsky S-61's; and SFO Helicopter has retrenched its passenger services severely, but is not yet profitable. Why is the state of scheduled passenger operations so bleak? Many answers to this question have been given. For example, it has been said that the aircraft used by the operators have been inadequate: that they have been designed for military use and are ill suited for civilians who have been used to a higher comfort level (especially since most flights taken on a helicopter are in conjunction with a ride on a large, comfortable jet transport). Alternatively, it has been said that the high cost of operating the current helicopter fleet has caused the ticket price to be too high to be attractive to the traveler. Sometimes the operators have been fingered as the culprits -- that they have not priced their product adequately and have structured their networks poorly, i.e., that the failure has been one of management and marketing. And from the purely technology minded, the answer has been that once the properly designed rotary wing aircraft arrives on the scene -- one designed for civilian use and having the proper payload-range configuration -- the market will boom as VTOL aircraft enter city-center to city-center service. Doubtless there is a kernel -of truth in all these explanations, and examples to sustain most of them can be found in the history of helicopter operations in the United States. The intent of the work described in this report was to explore one frequently cited cause of the problem of high operating costs of helicopters in scheduled service - to wit, high maintenance costs of rotary wing aircraft.     Structural insights into the gating of DNA passage by the topoisomerase II DNA-gate.

    Type IIA topoisomerases (Top2s) manipulate the handedness of DNA crossovers by introducing a transient and protein-linked double-strand break in one DNA duplex, termed the DNA-gate, whose opening allows another DNA segment to be transported through to change the DNA topology. Despite the central importance of this gate-opening event to Top2 function, the DNA-gate in all reported structures of Top2-DNA complexes is in the closed state. Here we present the crystal structure of a human Top2 DNA-gate in an open conformation, which not only reveals structural characteristics of its DNA-conducting path, but also uncovers unexpected yet functionally significant conformational changes associated with gate-opening. This structure further implicates Top2's preference for a left-handed DNA braid and allows the construction of a model representing the initial entry of another DNA duplex into the DNA-gate. Steered molecular dynamics calculations suggests the Top2-catalyzed DNA passage may be achieved by a rocker-switch-type movement of the DNA-gate

    Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter

    We propose that cold dark matter is made of Kaluza-Klein particles and explore avenues for its detection. The lightest Kaluza-Klein state is an excellent dark matter candidate if standard model particles propagate in extra dimensions and Kaluza-Klein parity is conserved. We consider Kaluza-Klein gauge bosons. In sharp contrast to the case of supersymmetric dark matter, these annihilate to hard positrons, neutrinos and photons with unsuppressed rates. Direct detection signals are also promising.
