    Hyper-Palatable Foods: Development of a Quantitative Definition and Application to the US Food System Database

    Objective: Extensive research has focused on hyper-palatable foods (HPF); however, HPF are defined using descriptive terms (e.g., fast foods, sweets), which are not standardized and lack specificity. The study purpose was to develop a quantitative definition of HPF and apply the definition to the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) to determine HPF prevalence in the US food system. Methods: A numeric definition of HPF was developed by extracting common HPF descriptive definitions from the literature and using nutrition software to quantify ingredients of fat, simple sugars, carbohydrates, and sodium. The definition was applied to the FNDDS. Results: HPF from the literature aligned with three clusters: (1) fat and sodium (> 25% kcal from fat, ≥ 0.30% sodium by weight), (2) fat and simple sugars (> 20% kcal from fat, > 20% kcal from sugar), and (3) carbohydrates and sodium (> 40% kcal from carbohydrates, ≥ 0.20% sodium by weight). In the FNDDS, 62% (4,795/7,757) of foods met HPF criteria. The HPF criteria identified a variety of foods, including some labeled reduced or low fat and vegetables cooked in creams, sauces, or fats. Conclusions: A data-derived HPF definition revealed that a substantial percentage of foods in the US food system may be hyper-palatable, including foods not previously conceptualized as hyper-palatable

    Feed intake and growth performance of goats supplemented with soy waste

    The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of supplemental feeding of soy waste on the feed intake and growth rate of goats. Twenty male crossbred (Boer x local) goats were assigned to two isonitrogenous diet groups: one of commercial pellet and the other of soy waste. The commercial pellet (1.0%) and soy waste (0.8%) were provided on the dry matter basis of body weight (BW) per day, to the respective group of each diet. The soy waste group had lower daily intakes of total dry matter (0.79 vs. 0.88 kg) and organic matter (665.71 vs. 790.44 g) than the group fed pellet; however, the differences on daily intakes for grass (0.62 vs. 0.64 kg), crude protein (96.81 vs. 96.83 g), and neutral detergent fibre (483.70 vs. 499.86 g) were not significant. No differences were observed between groups for BW gain. The feed conversion ratio and feed cost per kilogram of BW gain were lower for the group fed soy waste than for the one fed pellet. Goats fed supplemental soy waste have a lower total dry matter intake, feed conversion ratio, and feed cost per kilogram of body weight gain than those fed commercial pellets

    Study protocol: a double blind placebo controlled trial examining the effect of domperidone on the composition of breast milk [NCT00308334]

    BACKGROUND: Domperidone, a drug that enhances upper gastric motility, is an anti-dopaminergic medication that also elevates prolactin levels. It has been shown to safely increase the milk supply of lactating women. To date, researchers have analyzed the effects of domperidone on lactating woman with respect to the quantity of their milk production, adverse effects, and drug levels in the breast milk. However, the effect of domperidone on the macronutrient composition of breast milk has not been studied and current guidelines for fortification of human milk for premature infants do not distinguish between those women using or those not using domperidone. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of domperidone (given to lactating mothers of very preterm infants) on the macronutrient composition of breast milk. METHODS/DESIGN: Mothers of infants delivered at less than 31 weeks gestation, who are at least 3 weeks postpartum, and experiencing lactational failure despite non-pharmacological interventions, will be randomized to receive domperidone (10 mg three times daily) or placebo for a 14-day period. Breast milk samples will be obtained the day prior to beginning treatment and on days 4, 7 and 14. The macronutrient (protein, fat, carbohydrate and energy) and macromineral content (calcium, phosphorus and sodium) will be analyzed and compared between the two groups. Additional outcome measures will include milk volumes, serum prolactin levels (measured on days 0, 4, and 10), daily infant weights and breastfeeding rates at 2 weeks post study completion and at discharge. Forty-four participants will be recruited into the study. Analysis will be carried out using the intention to treat approach. DISCUSSION: If domperidone causes significant changes to the nutrient content of breast milk, an alteration in feeding practices for preterm infants may need to be made in order to optimize growth, nutrition and neurodevelopment outcomes

    Teores de minerais em polpas e cascas de frutos de cultivares de bananeira

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a percentagem de matéria seca, o teor de minerais e a capacidade de fornecimento de minerais, com base na ingestão dietética de referência na polpa e na casca de frutos verdes e maduros de 15 cultivares de bananeira. Utilizaram-se quatro cachos por cultivar e seis frutos por unidade amostral. Foram coletadas amostras frescas da polpa e da casca, para digestões sulfúricas (0,2 g) e nitroperclóricas (0,5 g). Foram determinados: no extrato sulfúrico, o N total pelo método Kjeldahl; e, no extrato nitroperclórico, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn e Se. O P foi determinado por colorimetria, e os demais nutrientes, por espectrofotometria de absorção atômica. O teor de minerais na polpa e na casca foi expresso com base na média dos dois estádios. Há diferenças entre cultivares de bananeira quanto à concentração de macro e micronutrientes na polpa e na casca, mas não entre frutos verdes e maduros. A cultivar Terrinha apresentou a maior percentagem de matéria seca na polpa, e as cultivares Marmelo e Maçã, na casca. Para N, P, Fe, Zn e Cu, a casca apresentou duas vezes o teor da polpa. O teor de K e Mn na casca foi de aproximadamente quatro vezes o da polpa. A polpa da cultivar Caipira (AAA) e a casca das cultivares Prata e Pacovan (AAB) apresentam os maiores teores de minerais
