Viking navigation
A comprehensive description of the navigation of the Viking spacecraft throughout their flight from Earth launch to Mars landing is given. The flight path design, actual inflight control, and postflight reconstruction are discussed in detail. The preflight analyses upon which the operational strategies and performance predictions were based are discussed. The inflight results are then discussed and compared with the preflight predictions and, finally, the results of any postflight analyses are presented
Analytic binary alloy volume-concentration relations and the deviation from Zen`s law
Alloys expand or contract as concentrations change, and the resulting
relationship between atomic volume and alloy content is an important property
of the solid. While a well-known approximation posits that the atomic volume
varies linearly with concentration (Zen`s law), the actual variation is more
complicated. Here we use an apparent size of the solute (solvent) atom and the
elasticity to derive explicit analytical expressions for the atomic volume of
binary solid alloys. Two approximations, continuum and terminal, are proposed.
Deviations from Zen`s law are studied for 22 binary alloy systems
OmniMapFree: A unified tool to visualise and explore sequenced genomes

Abstract

โข Background

Acquiring and exploring whole genome sequence information for a species under investigation is now a routine experimental approach. On most genome browsers, typically, only the DNA sequence, EST support, motif search results, and GO annotations are displayed. However, for many species, a growing volume of additional experimental information is available but this is rarely searchable within the landscape of the entire genome.

โข Results

We have developed a generic software which permits users to view a single genome in entirety either within its chromosome or supercontig context within a single window. This software permits the genome to be displayed at any scales and with any features. Different data types and data sets are displayed onto the genome, which have been acquired from other types of studies including classical genetics, forward and reverse genetics, transcriptomics, proteomics and improved annotation from alternative sources. In each display, different types of information can be overlapped, then retrieved in the desired combinations and scales and used in follow up analyses. The displays generated are of publication quality.

โข Conclusions

OmniMapFree provides a unified, versatile and easy-to-use software tool for studying a single genome in association with all the other datasets and data types available for the organism.</p
Half-Metallic Ferrimagnetism in Mn_2VAl
We show that Mn_2VAl is a compound for which the generalized gradient
approximation (GGA) to the exchange-correlation functional in density
functional theory makes a qualitative change in predicted behavior compared to
the usual local density approximation (LDA). Application of GGA leads to
prediction of Mn_2VAl being a half-metallic ferrimagnet, with the minority
channel being the conducting one. The electronic and magnetic structure is
analyzed and contrasted with the isostructural enhanced semimetal Fe_2VAl.Comment: 5 pages, Latex, 6 postscript figures. Description and figures of the

Cisplatin-induced emesis: systematic review and meta-analysis of the ferret model and the effects of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists
PURPOSE: The ferret cisplatin emesis model has been used for ~30ย years and enabled identification of clinically used anti-emetics. We provide an objective assessment of this model including efficacy of 5-HT(3) receptor antagonists to assess its translational validity. METHODS: A systematic review identified available evidence and was used to perform meta-analyses. RESULTS: Of 182 potentially relevant publications, 115 reported cisplatin-induced emesis in ferrets and 68 were included in the analysis. The majority (nย =ย 53) used a 10ย mgย kg(โ1) dose to induce acute emesis, which peaked after 2ย h. More recent studies (nย =ย 11) also used 5ย mgย kg(โ1), which induced a biphasic response peaking at 12ย h and 48ย h. Overall, 5-HT(3) receptor antagonists reduced cisplatin (5ย mgย kg(โ1)) emesis by 68% (45โ91%) during the acute phase (day 1) and by 67% (48โ86%) and 53% (38โ68%, all Pย <ย 0.001), during the delayed phase (days 2, 3). In an analysis focused on the acute phase, the efficacy of ondansetron was dependent on the dosage and observation period but not on the dose of cisplatin. CONCLUSION: Our analysis enabled novel findings to be extracted from the literature including factors which may impact on the applicability of preclinical results to humans. It reveals that the efficacy of ondansetron is similar against low and high doses of cisplatin. Additionally, we showed that 5-HT(3) receptor antagonists have a similar efficacy during acute and delayed emesis, which provides a novel insight into the pharmacology of delayed emesis in the ferret
