Studies on the marine fauna of the Mahatma Gandhi marine national park, Wandoor, South Andaman Part 1 Corals
A comprehensive survey was carried out during October 1990 to April 1991 to document the marine flora and fauna found in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Wandoor, South Andaman
Status of sea cow Dugong dugon (Muller) along the Southeast coast of India
Observations on the stranding and incidental catch of sea cow Dugong dugon (Muller) along the southeast coast of India are reviewed here. The number of incidental catch and stranded Dugongs were greater in the Gulf of Mannar than in the Palk Bay region during 1994-2000. The need for protection and conservation of Dugongs from indiscriminate exploitation are stressed upon to evolve suitable management strategies
Experimental culture of green mussel, Perna viridis (Linnaeus) in the Andamans
Experiments were conducted for the first time In the Andamans to culture green mussels, Perna
viridis in veloo netting bags and coi,r ropes in back water creek and inshore water. While growing of
mussels in velon netting bags did not succeed, the rope method gave encouraging results. Mussels of
47-81 mm sizes were collected for this purpose from natural habitat and seeded to the coir ropes
Hand Book on Aquafarming: Trout, Eel, Freshwater Prawn, Cray fish
India's rich resources of freshwater are not properly tapped for export
production of shell fIShes and fin fishes, The demand for shell fishes
and fin fishes is fast expanding, A few varieties of shellfishes such
as freshwater prawn and cray fish and fin fishes such as eel and trout
have good export potential, Therefore. it was decided by the
Organising Committee of the INDAQUA - the first aquaculture show
In Ind'ia to bring out this handbook for the benefit of farmers. I
express my very warm appreciation to Dr. M J Sebastian. Shrl C
Mohanakumaran Nair and Smt. Aneykutty Joseph. l'isherles College.
Panangad for compiling the accounts on freshwater prawn and Cray
Fish. Shrl K Dorairaj. CARL Andamans for preparation of the chapter
on cultivation of eel and Dr. Kuldlp Kumar. Chief Warden. Directorate
of Fisheries. Himachal Pradesh for contributing the article on trout
culture. The coordination work carried out by Dr. G Santhana
Krtshnan along with Shri M. Viswakumar. Shrl 0 Vincent and Shrl P
Easwara Prasad to bring out this handbook at a very short notice Is
appreciated. The financial assistance rendered by the Ministry of
Food Processing Industries - fisheries Division. Government of India
to print this handbook Is deeply acknowledged. I have no doubt that
this handbook will be of great help to all freshwater fish farmers In
India
Hermaphroditism in the threadfin fish, Polynemus microstoma Bleeker
The occurrence of hermaphroditism in the small-mouthed thrcadfin fish,
Polynemus microstoma Bleeker, collected from the Palk Bay and the Gulf of
Mannar is reported for the first time. Hermaphroditism is found in both the
lobes of the gonad. The two sex portions in the ovotestis, which are easily distinguishable
by their colpur, adhere along the entire length of the gonad in
antero-posterior direction. The testicular portion is on the inner lateral side of
the gonad. The relative size of the male and female portions of the ovotestis
varies in different specimens. It is seen from the microsections that the two sex
portions are separated by a thin connective tissue
A new distributional record of Pomadasys jubelini (Cuvier) along the Indian coast
Pomadasys jubelini (Cuvier) has been recorded for the first time from the Indian
coast based on a specimen obtained from the Bombay coast. A description of the
species has been given
Some observations on the disease of the short finned eel Anguilla bicolor bicolor McClelland
During the course of the experimental culture of the short-finned eel Anguilla bicolor bicolor McClelland
in running water at Mandapam Camp, seven kinds of diseases namely Fungus disease, Tail fin rot disease. Gas disease, Red pest and botches disease, swollen intestine disease. Gill disease and Cripple body disease were identified. The fungus disease was observed in elvers on their body surface as an outgrowth of whitish or grayish mass, spreading from the affected region. The tail-fin rot disease was noticed both in elvers and in growing eels and the affected portion gradually spreads due to the activity of the causative bacteria resulting in putrefactio
EXPLORATORY TRAWLING OFF GOA BY THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA FISHING VESSELS
ABSTRACT The fish catch data of the Government of India vessels M. T. Kalyani IV and M. T. Kalyani V trawling off Goa during November -December 1967 and March -April 1968 have been analysed and the area and depth-wise distribution of the fishes is presented in the paper, along with an estimate of potential yield by employing the "sweep method". Altogether 25 sub-areas under major areas 15-73 and 16-73, between lat. 15┬░Nand 16"'30 'N were fished. For a fishing effort of 347.58 hours, 175, 446 kg of fish were netted at a catch rate of 504.76 kg/hr. Most of the sub-areas have given an average over 350 kg/hr up to a maximum of 821.67 kg/hr. Sub-areas 15-73/2E, 3D, 4A, 4C, 4E, 6C, 6D, 16-73/lB, 2B and 3B are considered very productive in the region. About 80% of the catches was constituted by small sciaenids (52.79%), catfishes (14.91%) and elasmobranchs (12.55%). Quality fishes Lactarius and pomfrets constituted 7.82% and 1.69% respectively and prawns formed 1.43% of the catches. The bulk of the catches (55 %) came from 21-40 m depth zone. The catch/hour returns were very high in 31-40 m. A second peak at 61-70 m for total fish was also noticed. The potential sustainable annual yield for the shelf area between 15''N and 16┬░30'N has been estimated at 28,535 tonnes which indicates a good scope for an increase in the fishing effort
Acromegaly incidentally diagnosed at term in a pregnant woman presenting with ventricular premature complexes
Pituitary adenomas lead to increased growth hormone production and acromegaly. Pregnancy in acromegaly is rare as spontaneous conception is affected. We presented a case of 31 year old lady conceived by ovulation induction and presented at term gestation with ventricular premature complexes and was subsequently diagnosed with pituitary micro adenoma causing acromegaly. There has been no reported case of pregnancy with acromegaly presenting with premature ventricular complexes. Moreover, diagnosis of acromegaly in pregnancy is difficult and limited literature is available on its effects as well as management
Observations on the Indian short-finned eel Anguilla bicolor bicolor McClelland caught for the First time at sea during spawning migration
One migrant Indian short-finned female silver-eel, Anguilla bicolor bicolor
McClelland, measuring 866 mm in total length and 1150 g in weight, caught alive
for the first time from the inshore area off Karwar in July 1980, is recorded.
Salient morphological, morphometric and gonadal characteristics of the migrant
eel, compared with those of non-migrant and partially spawned female eels, confirmed
that the eel was in a maturing stage and was on its way to oceanic spawning
