Tetratic Order in the Phase Behavior of a Hard-Rectangle System
Previous Monte Carlo investigations by Wojciechowski \emph{et al.} have found
two unusual phases in two-dimensional systems of anisotropic hard particles: a
tetratic phase of four-fold symmetry for hard squares [Comp. Methods in Science
and Tech., 10: 235-255, 2004], and a nonperiodic degenerate solid phase for
hard-disk dimers [Phys. Rev. Lett., 66: 3168-3171, 1991]. In this work, we
study a system of hard rectangles of aspect ratio two, i.e., hard-square dimers
(or dominos), and demonstrate that it exhibits a solid phase with both of these
unusual properties. The solid shows tetratic, but not nematic, order, and it is
nonperiodic having the structure of a random tiling of the square lattice with
dominos. We obtain similar results with both a classical Monte Carlo method
using true rectangles and a novel molecular dynamics algorithm employing
rectangles with rounded corners. It is remarkable that such simple convex
two-dimensional shapes can produce such rich phase behavior. Although we have
not performed exact free-energy calculations, we expect that the random domino
tiling is thermodynamically stabilized by its degeneracy entropy, well-known to
be per particle from previous studies of the dimer problem on the
square lattice. Our observations are consistent with a KTHNY two-stage phase
transition scenario with two continuous phase transitions, the first from
isotropic to tetratic liquid, and the second from tetratic liquid to solid.Comment: Submitted for publicatio

Estimation of organizational capital of regions of Ukraine on the basis of computation of integral indexes of organizational
capital of regions is carried out. The groupment of regions of Ukraine after the level of development of organizational capital is
conducted. Estimation of influencing of organizational capital on socio-economic development and life standards for people of
regions is carried out, and it exposes the enough high level of this influencing
Random manifolds in non-linear resistor networks: Applications to varistors and superconductors
We show that current localization in polycrystalline varistors occurs on
paths which are, usually, in the universality class of the directed polymer in
a random medium. We also show that in ceramic superconductors, voltage
localizes on a surface which maps to an Ising domain wall. The emergence of
these manifolds is explained and their structure is illustrated using direct
solution of non-linear resistor networks
Classical electromagnetic field theory in the presence of magnetic sources
Using two new well defined 4-dimensional potential vectors, we formulate the
classical Maxwell's field theory in a form which has manifest Lorentz
covariance and SO(2) duality symmetry in the presence of magnetic sources. We
set up a consistent Lagrangian for the theory. Then from the action principle
we get both Maxwell's equation and the equation of motion of a dyon moving in
the electro-magnetic field.Comment: 10 pages, no figure
Smooth vortex precession in superfluid 4He
We have measured a precessing superfluid vortex line, stretched from a wire
to the wall of a cylindrical cell. By contrast to previous experiments with a
similar geometry, the motion along the wall is smooth. The key difference is
probably that our wire is substantially off center. We verify several numerical
predictions about the motion, including an asymmetry in the precession
signature, the behavior of pinning events, and the temperature dependence of
the precession.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Depinning of a superfluid vortex line by Kelvin waves
We measure the interaction of a single superfluid vortex with surface
irregularities. While vortex pinning in superconductors usually becomes weaker
at higher temperatures, we find the opposite behavior. The pinning steadily
increases throughout our measurement range, from 0.15Tc to over 0.5Tc. We also
find that moving the other end of the vortex decreases the pinning, so we
propose Kelvin waves along the vortex as a depinning mechanism.Comment: 5 figures; substantial revision including 2 new figure
