    Higher Partial Waves in p+p->p+p+eta near Threshold

    Exclusive measurements of the production of eta mesons in the p+p->p+p+eta reaction have been carried out at excess energies of 16 and 37 MeV above threshold. The deviations from phase space are dominated by the proton-proton final state interaction and this influences particularly the energy distribution of the eta meson. However, evidence is also presented at the higher energy for the existence of an anisotropy in the angular distributions of the eta meson and also of the final proton-proton pair, probably to be associated with D-waves in this system interfering with the dominant S-wave term. The sign of the eta angular anisotropy suggests that rho-exchange is important for this reaction.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX2e, 3 EPS Figures, Updated version, Accepted for publication in Phys. Lett.

    Exploration of hyperfine interaction between constituent quarks via eta productions

    In this work, the different exchange freedom, one gluon, one pion or Goldstone boson, in constituent quark model is investigated, which is responsible to the hyperfine interaction between constituent quarks, via the combined analysis of the eta production processes, πpηn\pi^{-}p\rightarrow\eta n and γpηp\gamma p\rightarrow\eta p. With the Goldstone-boson exchange, as well as the one-gluon or one-pion exchange, both the spectrum and observables, such as, the differential cross section and polarized beam asymmetry, are fitted to the suggested values of Particle Data Group and the experimental data. The first two types of exchange freedoms give acceptable description of the spectrum and observables while the one pion exchange can not describe the observables and spectrum simultaneously, so can be excluded. The experimental data for the two processes considered here strongly support the mixing angles for two lowest S11 sates and D13 states as about -30 and 6 degree respectively.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 4 table

    eta N S-wave scattering length in a three coupled channel, multiresonance, unitary model

    The S-wave scattering length for eta-N elastic scattering is extracted from the S-wave T-matrix in a three coupled channel, multiresonance unitary model. Results are compared with values already reported in literature which are obtained applying multichannel, but single resonance -- no background models. A dispersion among the previously published values of the real part of the S-wave scattering length is observed. We demonstrate that the reported spread originates from the strong sensitivity of the scattering length upon the small variation of the used input resonance parameters. In addition, we show that eta-N scattering length value obtained in single resonance -- no background models significantly increases if background term is added in a unitary way. We question the reliability of previously reported values based only on the single resonance -- no background models, and demonstrate that the value of the eta-N S-wave scattering length obtained in this publication is much more realistic because of the multiresonance and unitary approach.Comment: revtex, 20 pages + 3 figures (PostScript: gzip + uuencode) included, submitted to Phys.     Photoproduction of pions and properties of baryon resonances from a Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis

    Masses, widths and photocouplings of baryon resonances are determined in a coupled-channel partial wave analysis of a large variety of data. The Bonn-Gatchina partial wave formalism is extended to include a decomposition of t- and u-exchange amplitudes into individual partial waves. The multipole transition amplitudes for γppπ0\gamma p\to p\pi^0 and γpnπ+\gamma p\to n\pi^+ are given and compared to results from other analyses.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure

    Migration in the Anthropocene: how collective navigation, environmental system and taxonomy shape the vulnerability of migratory species

    Recent increases in human disturbance pose significant threats to migratory species using collective movement strategies. Key threats to migrants may differ depending on behavioural traits (e.g. collective navigation), taxonomy, and the environmental system (i.e. freshwater, marine, or terrestrial) associated with migration. We quantitatively assess how collective navigation, taxonomic membership, and environmental system impact species’ vulnerability by 1) evaluating population change in migratory and no n-migratory bird, mammal, and fish species using the Living Planet Database (LPD), 2) analysing the role of collective navigation and environmental system on migrant extinction risk using International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifications, and 3) compiling literature on geographic range change of migratory species. Likelihood of population decrease differed by taxonomic group: migratory birds were more likely to experience annual declines than non-migrants, while mammals displayed the opposite pattern. Within migratory species in IUCN, we observed that collective navigation and environmental system were important predictors of extinction risk for fishes and birds, but not for mammals, which had overall higher extinction risk than other taxa. We found high phylogenetic relatedness among collectively navigating species, which could have obscured its importance in determining extinction risk. Overall, outputs from these analyses can help guide strategic interventions to conserve the most vulnerable migrations

    P-wave excited baryons from pion- and photo-induced hyperon production

    We report evidence for N(1710)P11N(1710)P_{11}, N(1875)P11N(1875)P_{11}, N(1900)P13N(1900)P_{13}, Δ(1600)P33\Delta(1600)P_{33}, Δ(1910)P31\Delta(1910)P_{31}, and Δ(1920)P33\Delta(1920)P_{33}, and find indications that N(1900)P13N(1900)P_{13} might have a companion state at 1970\,MeV. The controversial Δ(1750)P31\Delta(1750)P_{31} is not seen. The evidence is derived from a study of data on pion- and photo-induced hyperon production, but other data are included as well. Most of the resonances reported here were found in the Karlsruhe-Helsinki (KH84) and the Carnegie-Mellon (CM) analyses but were challenged recently by the Data Analysis Center at GWU. Our analysis is constrained by the energy independent πN\pi N scattering amplitudes from either KH84 or GWU. The two πN\pi N amplitudes from KH84 or GWU, respectively, lead to slightly different πN\pi N branching ratios of contributing resonances but the debated resonances are required in both series of fits.Comment: 22 pages, 28 figures.
