Womenâs and Providersâ Experiences with Injectable Contraceptives (Depo-Provera): A View from Vadodara, India
Objective: To compare usersâ and providersâ perspectives on injectable contraceptives (IC). Methods: This qualitative study employed semi-structured in-depth interview technique. Sixty women with experience of using IC and 10 doctors involved in providing IC were selected. Telephonic interviews of doctors were also conducted. Results: Over 50% of the women had side effects and had discontinued use within 1 year. The most common âlikesâ according to women included ease of use, being tension free for 3 months and being effective and those of the providers were that it reduced anemia, privacy could be maintained, noncontraceptive benefits, good substitute, not to be taken daily like pills, safe and effective. The most common âdislikesâ reported by providers and clients were excessive bleeding, amenorrhea, irregular periods, spotting, weight gain and frequent pregnancy tests. Conclusion: Although certain distinct advantages of IC have been expressed, the associated problems are equally significant and therefore IC should not be an over-the-counter contraceptive
Construction and Characterization of E3-Deleted Bovine Adenovirus Type 3 Expressing Full-Length and Truncated Form of Bovine Herpesvirus Type 1 Glycoprotein gD
AbstractUsing the homologous recombination machinery ofE. coli,a 1.245-kb deletion was introduced in the E3 region of bovine adenovirus 3 (BAV3) genomic DNA cloned in a plasmid. Transfection of the restriction enzyme-excised, linear E3-deleted BAV3 genomic DNA into primary fetal bovine retina cells produced infectious virus (BAV3.E3d), suggesting that all the E3-specific open reading frames are nonessential for virus replicationin vitro. Using a similar approach, we constructed replication-competent (BAV3.E3gD and BAV3.E3gDt) BAV3 recombinant expressing full-length (gD) or truncated (gDt) glycoprotein of bovine herpes virus 1. Recombinant gD and gDt proteins expressed by BAV3.E3gD and BAV3.E3gDt, respectively, were recognized by gD-specific monoclonal antibodies directed against conformational epitopes, suggesting that antigenicity of recombinant gD and gDt was similar to that of the native gD expressed in bovine herpes virus 1-infected cells. Intranasal immunization of cotton rats induced strong gD- and BAV3-specific IgA and IgG immune responses. These results suggest that replication-competent bovine adenovirus 3-based vectors have potential for the delivery of vaccine antigens to the mucosal surfaces of animals
Melatonin protects against alterations in hippocampal cholinergic system, trace metals and oxidative stress induced by gestational and lactational exposure to cadmium
Dietary exposure to cadmium, even at lower doses, can lead to free radical induced neurotoxicity, neurobehavioral changes and alteration in neurotransmitters. Such changes are likely to be more pronounced in the developing brain due to incompleteness of blood brain barrier (BBB). Hippocampus being the seat of intelligence has a role in learning and cognitive behavior and any damage to hippocampus during developmental stage is likely to result in neurodegenerative changes in later life. To this end, fetal and neonatal exposure to cadmium was induced by exposing pregnant dams of Swiss albino strain throughout the period of gestation and following parturition up till 5th day post partum (pp) through drinking water (3ppm/animal/day). The neonates were sacrificed on day 6 pp and indices of oxidative stress, levels of trace elements and changes in cholinergic system were evaluated in the hippocampus.
Increased lipid peroxidation, surge in reactive oxygen species (ROS), depressed antioxidant defense, increased accumulation of cadmium, differential alterations in trace elements and decreased activity of AChE were the features of cadmium toxicity. Simultaneous administration of melatonin to cadmium challenged animals offset these detrimental changes. The results suggest that melatonin co-administration can effectively protect against the adverse
effects of cadmium on endogenous antioxidant status, changes in trace metal concentrations
and compromised hippocampal cholinergic system

Detection and Identification of the Atypical Bovine Pestiviruses in Commercial Foetal Bovine Serum Batches
The recently emerging atypical bovine pestiviruses have been detected in commercial foetal bovine serum (FBS) of mainly South American origin so far. It is unclear how widely the viruses are presented in commercial FBS of different geographic origins. To further investigate the possible pestivirus contamination of commercially available FBS batches, 33 batches of FBS were obtained from ten suppliers and analysed in this study for the presence of both the recognised and the atypical bovine pestiviruses. All 33 batches of FBS were positive by real-time RT-PCR assays for at least one species of bovine pestiviruses. According to the certificate of analysis that the suppliers claimed for each batch of FBS, BVDV-1 was detected in all 11 countries and BVDV-2 was detected exclusively in the America Continent. The atypical pestiviruses were detected in 13 batches claimed to originate from five countries. Analysis of partial 5â˛UTR sequences showed a high similarity among these atypical bovine pestiviruses. This study has demonstrated, for the first time that commercial FBS batches of different geographic origins are contaminated not only with the recognised species BVDV-1 and BVDV-2, but also with the emerging atypical bovine pestiviruses

Design and analysis of the DII-D radiative divertor water-cooled structures
The Radiative Divertor is a major modification to the divertor of DIII-D and is being designed and fabricated for installation in late 1996. The Radiative Divertor Program (RDP) will enhance the dissipative processes in the edge and divertor plasmas to reduce the heat flux and plasma erosion at the divertor target. This approach will have major implications for the heat removal methods used in future devices. The divertor is of slot-type configuration designed to minimize the flow of sputtered and injected impurities back to the core plasma. The new divertor will be composed of toroidally continuous, Inconel 625 water-cooled rings of sandwich construction with an internal water channel, incorporating seam welding to provide the water-to-vacuum seal as well as structural integrity. The divertor structure is designed to withstand electromagnetic loads as a result of halo currents and induced toroidal currents. It also accommodates the thermal differences experienced during the 400 {degrees}C bake used on DIII-D. A low Z plasma-facing surface is provided by mechanically attached graphite tiles. Water flow through the rings will inertially cool these tiles which will be subjected to 38 MW, 10 second pulses. Current schedules call for detailed design in 1996 with installation completed in March 1997. A full size prototype, one-quarter of one ring, is being built to validate manufacturing techniques, machining, roll-forming, and seam welding. The experience and knowledge gained through the fabrication of the prototype is discussed. The design of the electrically isolated (5 kV) vacuum-to-air water feedthroughs supplying the water-cooled rings is also discussed
