Judicial Review as a Response to Political Posturing

We use an agency model to analyze the impact of judicial review on the incentives of elected leaders to “posture” by enacting bold but ill-advised policies. We find that judicial review may exacerbate posturing by rescuing leaders from the consequences of unwise policies, but may also discourage posturing by alerting voters to unjustified government action. We further find that judges will defer to the decision of elected leaders unless posturing is sufficiently likely. We then show how judicial review affects voter welfare, both through its effect on policy choice and through its effect on the efficacy of the electoral process in selecting leaders. We also analyze how the desirability of judicial review is affected by characteristics of the leaders and the judges

Agreement of a Novel Vertical Jump System to Measure Vertical Jump Height: Brower Vertical Jump and Vertec Vertical Jump Systems

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 2: Issue 1, Article 12, 2021. Validity refers to the ability of a device to measure what it was intended to measure. Therefore, purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of a novel vertical jump height tool designed by Brower Timing Systems (Salt Lake City, Ut). The Brower vertical jump system was compared to the Vertec jump tester. A convenience sample (n=67) of college students performed three maximum countermovement jumps, with the average score being recorded. Data was collected simultaneously for both devices. Results showed a strong and statistically significant correlation between the Vertec vertical jump tester and Brower vertical jump (r = 0.971, p \u3c 0.001.) A paired t-test showed no significant difference (p = 0.170, t = 1.386) between the two systems. An analysis of equivalence was also performed with alpha set at 0.05 and an upper and lower bound set at +/- 0.5. The observed effect was statistically not different from zero and statistically equivalent to zero. Based on the statistical analysis, it can be concluded the Vertec and Brower vertical jump height systems have a high correlation and are equivalent. The Brower system can be an option for assessing vertical jump height, specifically, the Brower system may be useful for high throughput field environments such as testing teams or larger groups to provide valid data

Parallelization of particle-in-cell simulation modeling Hall-effect thrusters

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (p. 136-139).MIT's fully kinetic particle-in-cell Hall thruster simulation is adapted for use on parallel clusters of computers. Significant computational savings are thus realized with a predicted linear speed up efficiency for certain large-scale simulations. The MIT PIC code is further enhanced and updated with the accuracy of the potential solver, in particular, investigated in detail. With parallelization complete, the simulation is used for two novel investigations. The first examines the effect of the Hall parameter profile on simulation results. It is concluded that a constant Hall parameter throughout the entire simulation region does not fully capture the correct physics. In fact, it is found empirically that a Hall parameter structure which is instead peaked in the region of the acceleration chamber obtains much better agreement with experiment. These changes are incorporated into the evolving MIT PIC simulation. The second investigation involves the simulation of a high power, central-cathode thruster currently under development. This thruster presents a unique opportunity to study the efficiency of parallelization on a large scale, high power thruster. Through use of this thruster, we also gain the ability to explicitly simulate the cathode since the thruster was designed with an axial cathode configuration.by Justin M. Fox.S.M
