Nearly Massless Electrons in the Silicon Interface with a Metal Film
We demonstrate the realization of nearly massless electrons in the most
widely used device material, silicon, at the interface with a metal film. Using
angle-resolved photoemission, we found that the surface band of a monolayer
lead film drives a hole band of the Si inversion layer formed at the interface
with the film to have nearly linear dispersion with an effective mass about 20
times lighter than bulk Si and comparable to graphene. The reduction of mass
can be accounted for by repulsive interaction between neighboring bands of the
metal film and Si substrate. Our result suggests a promising way to take
advantage of massless carriers in silicon-based thin-film devices, which can
also be applied for various other semiconductor devices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Novel twin-roll-cast Ti/Al clad sheets with excellent tensile properties
Pure Ti or Ti alloys are recently spot-lighted in construction industries because they have excellent resistance to corrosions, chemicals, and climates as well as various coloring characteristics, but their wide applications are postponed by their expensiveness and poor formability. We present a new fabrication process of Ti/Al clad sheets by bonding a thin Ti sheet on to a 5052 Al alloy melt during vertical-twin-roll casting. This process has merits of reduced production costs as well as improved tensile properties. In the as-twin-roll-cast clad sheet, the homogeneously cast microstructure existed in the Al alloy substrate side, while the Ti/Al interface did not contain any reaction products, pores, cracks, or lateral delamination, which indicated the successful twin-roll casting. When this sheet was annealed at 350 degrees C-600 degrees C, the metallurgical bonding was expanded by interfacial diffusion, thereby leading to improvement in tensile properties over those calculated by a rule of mixtures. The ductility was also improved over that of 5052-O Al alloy (25%) or pure Ti (25%) by synergic effect of homogeneous deformation due to excellent Ti/Al bonding. This work provides new applications of Ti/Al clad sheets to lightweight-alloy clad sheets requiring excellent formability and corrosion resistance as well as alloy cost saving.112Ysciescopu
Development of a thorium coating on an aluminium substrate by using electrodeposition method and alpha spectroscopy
A thin coating of thorium on aluminium substrates with the areal density of
110 to 130 is developed over a circular area of 22 mm diameter by
using the electrodeposition method. An electrodeposition system is fabricated
to consist of three components; an anode made of a platinum mesh, a
cylindrical-shape vessel to contain the thorium solution, and a cathode in the
form of a circular aluminium plate. The aluminium plate is mounted
horizontally, and the platinum mesh is connected to an axial rod of an electric
motor, mounted vertically and normal to the plane of the aluminium. The
electrolyte solution is prepared by dissolving a known-weight thorium nitrate
powder in 0.8 M HNO3 and isopropanol. The system is operated either in constant
voltage (CV) or constant current (CC) mode. Under the electric field between
the anode and cathode, thorium ions were deposited on the aluminium substrate
mounted on the cathode. In the CV mode at 320, 360, and 400 V and in the CC
mode at 15 mA, thorium films were formed over a circular area of the aluminium
substrate. The areal density of thorium coating was measured by detecting
emitted alpha particles. The areal density of thorium varied from 80 to 130
by changing the deposition time from 10 to 60 min. The results
from the CV mode and CC mode are compared, and the radial dependence in the
measured areal density is discussed for different modes of the electric field.
The developed thorium coatings are to be used in the in-house development of
particle detectors, fast neutron converters, targets for thorium fission
experiments, and other purposes.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
Effects of resveratrol and SIRT1 on PGC-1α activity and mitochondrial biogenesis: A reevaluation
It has been reported that feeding mice resveratrol activates AMPK and SIRT1 in skeletal muscle leading to deacetylation and activation of PGC-1α, increased mitochondrial biogenesis, and improved running endurance. This study was done to further evaluate the effects of resveratrol, SIRT1, and PGC-1α deacetylation on mitochondrial biogenesis in muscle. Feeding rats or mice a diet containing 4 g resveratrol/kg diet had no effect on mitochondrial protein levels in muscle. High concentrations of resveratrol lowered ATP concentration and activated AMPK in C₂C₁₂ myotubes, resulting in an increase in mitochondrial proteins. Knockdown of SIRT1, or suppression of SIRT1 activity with a dominant-negative (DN) SIRT1 construct, increased PGC-1α acetylation, PGC-1α coactivator activity, and mitochondrial proteins in C₂C₁₂ cells. Expression of a DN SIRT1 in rat triceps muscle also induced an increase in mitochondrial proteins. Overexpression of SIRT1 decreased PGC-1α acetylation, PGC-1α coactivator activity, and mitochondrial proteins in C₂C₁₂ myotubes. Overexpression of SIRT1 also resulted in a decrease in mitochondrial proteins in rat triceps muscle. We conclude that, contrary to some previous reports, the mechanism by which SIRT1 regulates mitochondrial biogenesis is by inhibiting PGC-1α coactivator activity, resulting in a decrease in mitochondria. We also conclude that feeding rodents resveratrol has no effect on mitochondrial biogenesis in muscle
