BackgroundDepression is a prevalent mental health disorder. Although Internet use has been associated with depression, there is limited data on the association between smartphone use and depressive symptoms. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between smartphone use and depressive symptoms among older individuals in China.Methods5,244 Chinese older individuals over the age of 60 were selected as the sample from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) 2018 dataset. The dependent variable “depression symptoms” was measured using the 9-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale. The study employed multiple linear regression to investigate the relationship between smartphone use (independent variable) and depressive symptoms in older people. Thorough analyses of robustness, sensitivity, and heterogeneity were conducted to ensure the robustness and sensitivity of the findings. Additionally, mediating effect analysis was performed to elucidate the mechanism through which the dependent and independent variables were related.ResultsEmpirical study indicated that smartphone use had a negative impact on depressive symptoms among older adults, specifically leading to a reduction in such symptoms. The above-mentioned result was verified through endogenous and robustness tests. The heterogeneity analysis revealed that older individuals aged 70 years and above, male, and residing in urban areas exhibited a stronger association between smartphone use and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, the mediating effect model indicated that political participation, voluntary participation, and active leisure participation mediated the relationship between smartphone use and lower levels of depression symptoms among the older adults. However, passive leisure participation had a suppressing effect on the relationship between smartphone use and reduced depressive symptoms among the older adults.LimitationsThe causal relationship between variables required further investigation with a longitudinal design.ConclusionThese findings suggested that smartphone use may be considered an intervention to reduce depression symptoms among older people by increasing levels of political participation, voluntary participation, and active leisure participation

GigaST: A 10,000-hour Pseudo Speech Translation Corpus

This paper introduces GigaST, a large-scale pseudo speech translation (ST) corpus. We create the corpus by translating the text in GigaSpeech, an English ASR corpus, into German and Chinese. The training set is translated by a strong machine translation system and the test set is translated by human. ST models trained with an addition of our corpus obtain new state-of-the-art results on the MuST-C English-German benchmark test set. We provide a detailed description of the translation process and verify its quality. We make the translated text data public and hope to facilitate research in speech translation. Additionally, we also release the training scripts on NeurST to make it easy to replicate our systems. Purpose: To investigate the curative effects of 3-cinnamoyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one (CHMP) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced model of diabetic SD rats, and the underlying mechanism. Method: Diabetes was induced in rats using single intraperitoneal injection of STZ. Subsequently, diabetic and non-diabetic rats were randomly grouped into five experimental groups. Six weeks after the STZ-injection, the diabetic animals were orally administered test compound (CHMP) at two doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight for 6 weeks. Thereafter, the rats were anesthetised, and body weight, blood sugar, and motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) were determined. Moreover, real time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot analysis were used to assay the expression levels of genes in PIK3/Akt pathway and Glut4. Results: Treatment of diabetic rats with CHMP significantly reduced levels of fasting blood glucose and enhanced average rat body weight, relative to diabetic control (p ˂ 0.05). Motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) was remarkably increased in CHMP-treated rats (54.2 ± 2.2), when compared to the diabetic control rats (46 ± 4.1, p < 0.01). Results from RT-PCR and western blot indicated increased expressions of PI3K, Akt and IRS-1, and down regulation of GSK-3B expression in skeletal muscle. The CHMP treatment also upregulated the Glut4 expression in skeletal muscle. Conclusion: These findings show that CHMP may be beneficial in the management of diabetic neuropath

The aim was to investigate detection of pulmonary alveolar lavage fluid tuberculosis DNA by real-time fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) combined with clinical application of the sputum smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosis with TB interferon-γ release assay (TB-IGRA). From October 2014 to October 2015, 632 outpatients and inpatients treated in our hospital were randomly selected, of which 459 patients as the research group managed with RT-PCR detection combined with TB-IGRA and 173 patients as the control group undergoing electronic bronchoscopy alveolar lavage fluid detection, with detection results statistically evaluated. The positive rate in the research group was 96.51%, i.e. significantly higher than that in the control group (66.47%), yielding a statistically significant difference (χ2=109.68, p=0.00). The true positive rate was 97.7% in the research group and 67.92% in the control group; the true positive rate was significantly higher in the research group patients as compared with the control group, yielding a statistically significant difference (χ2=112.04, p=0.00). The sensitivity and specificity, as well as Youden index were significantly higher in the research group as compared with the control group. In conclusion, TB DNA detection by RT-PCR combined with TB-IGRA is a very good method of diagnosing tuberculosis, and it can be implemented in clinical diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Very thick, ~ 40 μ\mum, clean, and highly textured MgB2 film was effectively grown on an Al2O3 substrate. The fabrication technique is by the hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) using B2H6 gas and Mg ingot as the sources. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows a highly (101)-oriented MgB2 crystal structure without any impurity detected. There is no signal from the substrate in the XRD spectrum, indicating that the film thickness exceeds the X-ray penetration length. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that the film is composed of highly-packed MgB2 micro-crystals with a uniform size distribution of about 2 μ\mum in diameter and 0.2 μ\mum in thickness. According to the compositional analysis of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), no oxygen, hence no MgO, exists in the textured film, consistent with the XRD result. Also, the transport properties are similar to those of a single crystal, indicating a clean film of good crystallite. The zero field transition temperatures are determined as TC(onset) = 39.2 K and TC(zero) = 38.4 K, giving a sharp transition typical of a clean sample. The residual resistivity ratio (RRR) is determined as 6.4 and the magnetoreisitance (MR) is about 28 % at 40 K under the applied field of 9 T, which are similar to those of a single crystal. The zero temperature upper critical field, HC2(0), is extrapolated as 19 T from the TC(onset) at applied field up to 9 T.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
