Postphlebitic ulcer treatment with platelet-rich plasma and autograft of skin. Case Presentation

    Get PDF
Cutaneous ulcers not only constitute a serious physical problem, but also a psychological one, as they considerably reduce the patient’s quality of life. The case of a 76 - year - old woman with a history of peripheral venous insufficiency and variceal vascular surgery is presented. She was suffering from a large post - phlebitic ulcer (14 x 9 cm) with a long evolution in the right maleolotibial region. It was applied a treatment with autologous plasma gel rich in platelets and then autografting skin free, of medium thickness. After curing the grafted area and performing cures on an outpatient basis for three weeks, healing was achieved in more than 70% of the initially affected area. The case presentation is aimed at showing the benefits of platelet-rich plasma as healing adjuvant

Primary Lymphomas of the Central Nervous System are an uncommon variety of non- Hodgkin extra node which may affect the brain, spinal cord, eyes, meninges and cranial nerves. It is presented a case of a 51-year-old patient who came to the doctor complaining of headache and papilledema caused by an encephalic lesion was corroborated which required surgical treatment. Histological study allowed diagnosing a non-hodking lymphoma of a high malignancy, B cells, positive CD20, with a type of peripheral Burkitt pattern. The patient received immunochemo-therapy and radiotherapy, with a favorable evolution. Because it is an uncommon and aggressive tumor it was decided to present the case

Background: there is an established relationship between cancer and the appearance and development of thromboembolic disease. It is necessary to identify patients with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism using predictive scales to individualize the risk. Objective: to identify the risk of thrombosis in patients with suffering cancer conditions undergoing chemotherapy. Method: a series of cases descriptive cross-sectional study, treated at the Clinical Oncology Service of the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima University General Hospital, Cienfuegos, from June the 1st, 2020 to April 30th, 2021. The information was obtained from the clinical record and a data collection model. The variables analyzed were: age, sex, site of the primary tumor, platelet count prior to chemotherapy, serum hemoglobin levels, erythropoietin use, leukocyte count prior to chemotherapy, and body mass index. The data obtained were processed using the SPSS version 21 statistical program and the results are presented in tables using absolute numbers and percentages. Results: the most frequent age group was 60 years old and over with 77 patients (51.3 %), 45 (30 %) male. The application of the Khorana score marked a relevant percentage (26 %) of patients with intermediate and high risk of thrombosis. Conclusions: the research shows a mostly aged adult population, with risk factors for thrombosis related to the patient, oncological disease and systemic treatments

Background: acute non-lymphoblastic leukemias account for 80% of leukemias in adults. Its incidence increases with age up to 20 per 100 000 in over 70 years old patients. Objective: To characterize the survival of patients with acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia at the "Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima " Hospital of Cienfuegos. Methods: A case series which included all patients who underwent diagnosis of acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia between 1999 and 2010 at the Hospital of Cienfuegos. Data were obtained from the record book of hematological malignancies from the Oncohematology Department. Such variables like age, sex, morphological variant of the leukemia, incidence per year and overall survival were analyzed according to sex, morphological variant, origin, age and bone marrow transplant. Results: The average age of the studied series was 55 years old . Males were predominant with 55 cases. The most common morphological variant was the myelomonocytic. Overall survival of the series was 20% with a median follow-up of 60 months. Overall survival was slightly higher in females (25% vs 18%). The patients who underwent some form of transplant had a better survival (75% vs 13%). Conclusions: The survival of patients with acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia at the "Dr. Aldereguía Gustavo Lima" Hospital is very limited

Small cell lymphocytic lymphoma of eye annexes. Case presentation

    Get PDF
Lymphomas are malignant diseases that originate in the immune system cells and are predominantly manifested by lymphadenopathy; sometimes the presentation is in extranodal places. The eye and its annexes may be affected by a heterogeneous group of primary lymphomas or, secondarily, by the extension of lymphomas originated in lymph nodes or other extranodal sites. The case of a patient who went to the consultation due to left palpebral ptosis is reported and physical examination showed bilateral involvement, with tumors in the lower right eye bulbar conjunctiva and in the left eye upper bulbar conjunctiva. A small B cell lymphocytic non-Hodgkin lymphoma was diagnosed by conjunctiva biopsy. The patient was considered a stage IIIAE of Ann Arbor and treated with six cycles of cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin and prednisone, plus the Cuban monoclonal antibody anti-CD20 CIMABior®. The complete response was reached, state in which the disease remains so far
