Flux Compactifications of M-Theory on Twisted Tori
We find the bosonic sector of the gauged supergravities that are obtained
from 11-dimensional supergravity by Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction with
flux to any dimension D. We show that, if certain obstructions are absent, the
Scherk-Schwarz ansatz for a finite set of D-dimensional fields can be extended
to a full compactification of M-theory, including an infinite tower of
Kaluza-Klein fields. The internal space is obtained from a group manifold
(which may be non-compact) by a discrete identification. We discuss the
symmetry algebra and the symmetry breaking patterns and illustrate these with
particular examples. We discuss the action of U-duality on these theories in
terms of symmetries of the D-dimensional supergravity, and argue that in
general it will take geometric flux compactifications to M-theory on
non-geometric backgrounds, such as U-folds with U-duality transition functions.Comment: Latex, 47 page
Generalised Geometry for M-Theory
Generalised geometry studies structures on a d-dimensional manifold with a
metric and 2-form gauge field on which there is a natural action of the group
SO(d,d). This is generalised to d-dimensional manifolds with a metric and
3-form gauge field on which there is a natural action of the group .
This provides a framework for the discussion of M-theory solutions with flux. A
different generalisation is to d-dimensional manifolds with a metric, 2-form
gauge field and a set of p-forms for either odd or even on which there is a
natural action of the group . This is useful for type IIA or IIB
string solutions with flux. Further generalisations give extended tangent
bundles and extended spin bundles relevant for non-geometric backgrounds.

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: Shocks and Outflows in a normal star-forming galaxy
We demonstrate the feasibility and potential of using large integral field
spectroscopic surveys to investigate the prevalence of galactic-scale outflows
in the local Universe. Using integral field data from SAMI and the Wide Field
Spectrograph, we study the nature of an isolated disk galaxy, SDSS
J090005.05+000446.7 (z = 0.05386). In the integral field datasets, the galaxy
presents skewed line profiles changing with position in the galaxy. The skewed
line profiles are caused by different kinematic components overlapping in the
line-of-sight direction. We perform spectral decomposition to separate the line
profiles in each spatial pixel as combinations of (1) a narrow kinematic
component consistent with HII regions, (2) a broad kinematic component
consistent with shock excitation, and (3) an intermediate component consistent
with shock excitation and photoionisation mixing. The three kinematic
components have distinctly different velocity fields, velocity dispersions,
line ratios, and electron densities. We model the line ratios, velocity
dispersions, and electron densities with our MAPPINGS IV shock and
photoionisation models, and we reach remarkable agreement between the data and
the models. The models demonstrate that the different emission line properties
are caused by major galactic outflows that introduce shock excitation in
addition to photoionisation by star-forming activities. Interstellar shocks
embedded in the outflows shock-excite and compress the gas, causing the
elevated line ratios, velocity dispersions, and electron densities observed in
the broad kinematic component. We argue from energy considerations that, with
the lack of a powerful active galactic nucleus, the outflows are likely to be
driven by starburst activities. Our results set a benchmark of the type of
analysis that can be achieved by the SAMI Galaxy Survey on large numbers of

Net endogenous acid production is associated with a faster decline in GFR in African Americans
Increased acid excretion may promote renal injury. To evaluate this in African Americans with hypertensive nephrosclerosis, we studied the association between the net endogenous acid production and progression of kidney disease in 632 patients in the AASK trial. Protein and potassium intakes were estimated from 24h urea nitrogen and potassium excretion, and used to estimate net endogenous acid production, averaged over 2 years, approximating routine intake. The link between net endogenous acid production and the I125iothalamate glomerular filtration rate (iGFR) and time to end-stage renal disease or doubling of serum creatinine was analyzed using mixed models and Cox proportional hazards regressions. The trend in higher net endogenous acid production was significantly associated with a faster decline in iGFR over a median of 3.2 years. After adjustment for age, body mass index, baseline iGFR, urine protein-to-creatinine ratio, and randomized treatment group, the trend in higher net endogenous acid production remained significantly associated with a faster decline in iGFR at a rate of 1.01ml/min per 1.73m2 per year faster in the highest compared to the lowest quartile. However, in time-to-event analyses over a median of 7.7 years, the adjusted hazard ratio (1.10) for composite renal events per 25mEq/day higher net endogenous acid production was not significant. Hence, our findings implicate endogenous acid production as a potential modifiable risk factor for progressive kidney disease
The Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI)
We demonstrate a novel technology that combines the power of the multi-object
spectrograph with the spatial multiplex advantage of an integral field
spectrograph (IFS). The Sydney-AAO Multi-object IFS (SAMI) is a prototype
wide-field system at the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) that allows 13
imaging fibre bundles ("hexabundles") to be deployed over a 1-degree diameter
field of view. Each hexabundle comprises 61 lightly-fused multimode fibres with
reduced cladding and yields a 75 percent filling factor. Each fibre core
diameter subtends 1.6 arcseconds on the sky and each hexabundle has a field of
view of 15 arcseconds diameter. The fibres are fed to the flexible AAOmega
double-beam spectrograph, which can be used at a range of spectral resolutions
(R=lambda/delta(lambda) ~ 1700-13000) over the optical spectrum (3700-9500A).
We present the first spectroscopic results obtained with SAMI for a sample of
galaxies at z~0.05. We discuss the prospects of implementing hexabundles at a
much higher multiplex over wider fields of view in order to carry out
spatially--resolved spectroscopic surveys of 10^4 to 10^5 galaxies.Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures. Accepted by MNRA
Optimism and Risk of Incident Hypertension: A Target for Primordial Prevention
Aims
Optimism is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease risk; however, few prospective studies have considered optimism in relation to hypertension risk specifically. We investigated whether optimism was associated with a lower risk of developing hypertension in U.S. service members, who are more likely to develop high blood pressure early in life. We also evaluated race/ethnicity, sex and age as potential effect modifiers of these associations.
Methods
Participants were 103 486 hypertension-free U.S. Army active-duty soldiers (mean age 28.96 years, 61.76% White, 20.04% Black, 11.01% Hispanic, 4.09% Asian, and 3.10% others). We assessed optimism, sociodemographic characteristics, health conditions, health behaviours and depression status at baseline (2009–2010) via self-report and administrative records, and ascertained incident hypertension over follow-up (2010–2014) from electronic health records and health assessments. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and adjusted models for a broad range of relevant covariates.
Results
Over a mean follow-up of 3.51 years, 15 052 incident hypertension cases occurred. The highest v. lowest optimism levels were associated with a 22% reduced risk of developing hypertension, after adjusting for all covariates including baseline blood pressure (HR = 0.78; 95% CI = 0.74–0.83). The difference in hypertension risk between the highest v. lowest optimism was also maintained when we excluded soldiers with hypertension in the first two years of follow-up and, separately, when we excluded soldiers with prehypertension at baseline. A dose–response relationship was evident with higher optimism associated with a lower relative risk (p \u3c 0.001). Higher optimism was consistently associated with a lower risk of developing hypertension across sex, age and most race/ethnicity categories.
Conclusions
In a diverse cohort of initially healthy male and female service members particularly vulnerable to developing hypertension, higher optimism levels were associated with reduced hypertension risk independently of sociodemographic and health factors, a particularly notable finding given the young and healthy population. Results suggest optimism is a health asset and a potential target for public health interventions
Are we on the same page? Knowledge boundaries and transactive memory system development in cross-functional teams
One of the key challenges that organizations face when trying to integrate knowledge across different functions is the need to overcome knowledge boundaries between team members. In cross-functional teams, these boundaries, associated with different knowledge backgrounds of people from various disciplines, create communication problems, necessitating team members to engage in complex cognitive processes when integrating knowledge toward a joint outcome. This research investigates the impact of syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic knowledge boundaries on a team’s ability to develop a transactive memory system (TMS)—a collective memory system for knowledge coordination in groups. Results from our survey show that syntactic and pragmatic knowledge boundaries negatively affect TMS development. These findings extend TMS theory beyond the information-processing view, which treats knowledge as an object that can be stored and retrieved, to the interpretive and practice-based views of knowledge, which recognize that knowledge (in particular specialized knowledge) is localized, situated, and embedded in practice
