Get the Jab or Else: Examining the role of Fear Appeals in the Herman Cain Award subreddit using Protection Motivation Theory

    Get PDF
In 2021, I conducted participant observation research on the Herman Cain Award subreddit, examining the effectiveness of fear appeals on social media. In that research, I determined that fear appeals on social media platforms are just as effective as when used on mass media platforms. The research also showed that the fear appeals in the subreddit worked to appeal to the unvaccinated users’ fear of online ridicule rather than a fear of bodily harm. I found this finding interesting and worked to expand my research, now two years later, by further investigating the platform using Protection Motivation Theory, a health behavior theory I identified during my initial research. In my current research, I use this theory to analyze the forum\u27s Immunized to Prevent (IPA) section and the effects of fear of online ridicule in health communication

The Neuroscience of Moral Judgment: Empirical and Philosophical Developments

    Get PDF
We chart how neuroscience and philosophy have together advanced our understanding of moral judgment with implications for when it goes well or poorly. The field initially focused on brain areas associated with reason versus emotion in the moral evaluations of sacrificial dilemmas. But new threads of research have studied a wider range of moral evaluations and how they relate to models of brain development and learning. By weaving these threads together, we are developing a better understanding of the neurobiology of moral judgment in adulthood and to some extent in childhood and adolescence. Combined with rigorous evidence from psychology and careful philosophical analysis, neuroscientific evidence can even help shed light on the extent of moral knowledge and on ways to promote healthy moral development

Trans-Diagnostic Relations Between Functional Brain Network Integrity and Cognition

Cognitive impairment occurs across the psychosis spectrum. However it is unknown whether these shared manifestations of cognitive dysfunction also reflect shared neurobiological mechanisms, or whether the source of impairment differs. One common feature of cognitive impairment across psychotic disorders is that the impairments are often ҧeneralizedӬ indicating deficits in a range of cognitive domains, including executive functioning, processing speed, memory, and attention. The goal of the current study was to determine whether the similar generalized cognitive deficit observed across psychotic disorders is also associated with a shared putative mechanism of functional brain network integrity. To address this question, we estimated resting-state functional network integrity of the cingulo-opercular and fronto-parietal networks -- two networks widely implicated in cognitive ability -- in 201 healthy controls, 143 schizophrenia, 103 schizoaffective, and 129 bipolar disorder with psychosis participants from the Bipolar and Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes (BSNIP1) consortium. Cognitive ability was measured using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS), and generalized cognitive ability was estimated as the first factor (54% variance explained) in a principal axis factor analysis of all BACS subtests. Graph theory algorithms were used to estimate the global and local efficiency of the whole brain, cingulo-opercular network (CON), fronto-parietal network (FPN), and the auditory network (AUD), as well as participation coefficient of the anterior insula, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. We observed significantly reduced CON global efficiency in schizophrenia and psychotic bipolar patients compared to healthy controls (pճ\u3c.01), but none of the clinical groups differed from one another (pճ\u3e.21). All psychotic disorders had significantly reduced CON local efficiency (pճ\u3c.03), but the clinical groups did not differ from one another. CON global efficiency was significantly associated with general cognitive ability across all groups (_=.099, p=.009), and significantly mediated the relationship between psychotic disorder status and general cognition (p\u3c.05). Exploratory analyses revealed that global efficiency of the subcortical network was also significantly reduced in psychotic disorders (p=.007), and positively predicted cognitive ability (_=.094, p=.009). These findings provide evidence of a role for reduced CON and subcortical network efficiency in the generalized cognitive deficit observed across the psychosis spectrum. They also support the hypothesis that a shared neurobiological mechanism underlies the dimension of cognitive impairment in psychotic disorders

Renewable energy development in rural Saskatchewan : a critical study of a new social movement

    Get PDF
In 2003, the town of Craik initiated a unique renewable energy project with the dual goals of addressing both the environmental and the rural economic crisis. This Master’s thesis provides an exploration of the factors that both facilitate and constrain the advancement of this project. The research focuses on the question: What are the cultural and social factors that inhibit the Craik project from meeting its environmental and economic goals? New social movement theory provides a theoretical framework for explaining contradictions within social movements, while a critical ethnographic methodology is used to uncover specific underlying contradictions that exist at Craik. This thesis analyzes the dynamics of facilitating and non-facilitating factors to make visible the deeper sources of conflict, to contribute to theoretical models of social change and understandings of community development. Furthermore, the thesis provides direction for the Craik eco-project that can further the implementation of practices that will facilitate both its economic and environmental goals. Finally, the study provides valuable insights to other communities working to facilitate similar eco-projects and influence public policy in response to global warmin

Images of Cecal Volvulus From a Strangulating Fallopian Tube: A Case Report

    Get PDF
An unusual case of cecal volvulus arising from a strangulating fallopian tube is presented. The etiology, diagnosis, and management guidelines of this infrequent cause of large bowel obstruction are reviewed. Computed tomography images are included, which demonstrate key features that are pathognomonic for this condition. To our knowledge, this is the first report of gynecologic adnexa giving rise to cecal volvulus

The Iconography of the Sacred Mother of Santa Maria Tonantzintla

    Get PDF
This thesis entails a three-part approach to understanding the iconographic program at Santa Maria Tonantzintla. First, an historical and stylistic background of Santa Maria Tonantzintla will be presented. Included in this section is a description of the church and its many saints. The second part is a description of the various images of the Virgin and associated Marian Emblemata within the church design. The third part focuses on the European- based iconography of the Virgin and the iconography of the pre-Hispanic earth mother Tonantzin. It will illustrate how the image of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception at Santa Maria is the physical manifestation of a sacred discourse between Catholic and ancient Mexican iconography
