A Thousand and One Nights between Orient and Occident
No other country is influenced in its political, social and cultural structures by both western and eastern mentality such as Lebanon, and hardly any other country has such a pivotal function. In this mediator function it can be compared with a literary work, that merits its role in world literature as hardly any other piece of literature in regard to the co-operation of Orient and Occident. I am thinking of the collection of "A Thousand and One Nights", or with its original title "Alf Laila wa-Laila"
Glottophagy in Eco, Schnurre and Tawada
The paper deals with an aspect of materiality in language as it is expressed in the complex metaphor of glottophagia, invented by Louis-Jean Calvet in the context of linguistics and colonialism. In this article the term is released from Calvet's unilateral negative use of the term as he focuses on its relation to orality, and instead it is linked with the positive literal tradition of eating written language as e.g. in the Bible and in the Classical Antiquity. From this point of view, glottophagia's poetological function as destroying, combining, reanimating, and purifying language emerges as a crucial feature of literary texts by Umberto Eco, Wolfdietrich Schnurre and Yoko Tawada
Knowing How To Know: A Case Study on the Role of Knowledge Transfer Practices in Product Innovation
The purpose of this thesis is to identify differences in knowledge transfer practices with regard to market knowledge between development of radical and incremental product innovations. The thesis aims to contribute to the current body of literature by addressing a current academic uncertainty regarding how market knowledge is transferred internally in relation to degrees of innovation. From a practical perspective it should help organizations identify knowledge transfer practices relevant to their innovation goals, be they radical or incremental.Three knowledge transfer practices were identified which are applied in different ways, depending on whether the developed product innovation is radical or incremental. These findings have practical implications as they can offer managers advice on how to use these practices, depending on whether they want to focus on the development of radical or incremental innovations
Threatened North African seagrass meadows have supported green turtle populations for millennia
"Protect and restore ecosystems and biodiversity" is the second official aim of the current UN Ocean Decade (2021 to 2030) calling for the identification and protection of critical marine habitats. However, data to inform policy are often lacking altogether or confined to recent times, preventing the establishment of long-term baselines. The unique insights gained from combining bioarchaeology (palaeoproteomics, stable isotope analysis) with contemporary data (from satellite tracking) identified habitats which sea turtles have been using in the Eastern Mediterranean over five millennia. Specifically, our analysis of archaeological green turtle (Chelonia mydas) bones revealed that they likely foraged on the same North African seagrass meadows as their modern-day counterparts. Here, millennia-long foraging habitat fidelity has been directly demonstrated, highlighting the significance (and long-term dividends) of protecting these critical coastal habitats that are especially vulnerable to global warming. We highlight the potential for historical ecology to inform policy in safeguarding critical marine habitats
