    The Prevalence of Scoliosis Screening Positive and Its Influencing Factors: A School-Based Cross-Sectional Study in Zhejiang Province, China

    ObjectiveEarly detection of scoliosis is of great significance to patients with scoliosis and the whole society. This paper aims to learn the prevalence of scoliosis screening positive among students in primary and secondary schools and to explore the influencing factors.MethodsIn 2019, a stratified cluster sampling technique was employed in this school-based cross-sectional study. The sampling covers all prefecture-level cities in Zhejiang Province. Based on the whole class, at least 80 students in each grade of primary school, junior high school, and senior high school were selected. Physical examination and scoliosis screening were performed in the school-based investigation. The distribution of demographic characteristics and nutritional status of children and adolescents with scoliosis screening positive were explored.ResultsA total of 45,547 students were screened. The overall prevalence of children and adolescents with scoliosis screening positive were 3.9%. Higher prevalence of scoliosis screening positive was found in students living in urban area (4.1%), women students (4.1%), students with low weight (5.3%) (p < 0.05), and the prevalence increased with age (p < 0.05). In logistic analysis, we found age (OR = 1.145; 95% Cis: 1.128, 1.162), gender (OR = 1.118; 95% Cis: 1.016, 1.230) and low weight (OR = 1.48; 95% Cis: 1.25, 1.751) were the influencing factors for prevalence of scoliosis screening positive (p < 0.05).ConclusionsThere were no disparities between living areas, but there was a significant difference between genders, among different ages, and among different nutritional statuses of children and adolescents with or without scoliosis screening positive. In multi-analysis, age, gender, and low weight were the influencing factors for the prevalence of scoliosis screening positive. Age and gender-specific scoliosis screening strategies and nutritional public health policies for children and adolescents are needed

    From waste to protein: a new strategy of converting composted distilled grain wastes into animal feed

    Distilled grain waste (DGW) is rich in nutrients and can be a potential resource as animal feed. However, DGW contains as much as 14% lignin, dramatically reducing the feeding value. White-rot fungi such as Pleurotus ostreatus could preferentially degrade lignin with high efficiency. However, lignin derivatives generated during alcohol distillation inhibit P. ostreatus growth. Thus, finding a new strategy to adjust the DGW properties to facilitate P. ostreatus growth is critical for animal feed preparation and DGW recycling. In this study, three dominant indigenous bacteria, including Sphingobacterium thermophilum X1, Pseudoxanthomonas byssovorax X3, and Bacillus velezensis 15F were chosen to generate single and compound microbial inoculums for DGW composting to prepare substrates for P. ostreatus growth. Compared with non-inoculated control or single microbial inoculation, all composite inoculations, especially the three-microbial compound, led to faster organic metabolism, shorter composting process, and improved physicochemical properties of DGW. P. ostreatus growth assays showed the fastest mycelial colonization (20.43 μg·g−1 ergosterol) and extension (9 mm/d), the highest ligninolytic enzyme activities (Lac, 152.68 U·g−1; Lip, 15.56 U·g−1; MnP, 0.34 U·g−1; Xylanase, 10.98 U·g−1; FPase, 0.71 U·g−1), and the highest lignin degradation ratio (30.77%) in the DGW sample after 12 h of composting with the three-microbial compound inoculation when compared to other groups. This sample was relatively abundant in bacteria playing critical roles in amino acid, carbohydrate, energy metabolism, and xenobiotic biodegradation, as suggested by metagenomic analysis. The feed value analysis revealed that P. ostreatus mycelia full colonization in composted DGW led to high fiber content retention and decreased lignin content (final ratio of 5% lignin) but elevated protein concentrations (about 130 g·kg−1 DM). An additional daily weight gain of 0.4 kg/d was shown in cattle feeding experiments by replacing 60% of regular feed with it. These findings demonstrate that compound inoculant consisting of three indigenous microorganisms is efficient to compost DGW and facilitate P. ostreatus growth. P. ostreatus decreased the lignin content of composted DGW during its mycelial growth, improving the quality of DGW for feeding cattle

    Validity and reliability of the toxic leadership behaviors of nurse managers scale among Chinese nurses

    ObjectivesToxic leadership is increasingly becoming common in the nursing field, but the measurement tools are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to translate the toxic leadership behaviors of nurse managers (ToxBH-NM) scale into Chinese and test its psychometric properties among Chinese nurses.MethodsThe data for this study were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 1,195 nurses. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to examine the structural validity of the ToxBH-NM. The following psychometric properties of the scale were assessed: content validity, criterion validity, internal consistency reliability, and test–retest reliability.ResultsThe Chinese version of the ToxBH-NM (C-ToxBH-NM) scale had two dimensions and 30 items. The correlation coefficients between the scores of each item and the total scores were 0762–0.922 (p < 0.001), and the range of the CR determination values of all the items were 8.610–18.998, with statistical significance (p < 0.001). The total content validity index (CVI) was 0.996, the average CVI was 0.996, and the item-level CVI was 0.875–1.000. Two common factors were identified in the EFA, and 81.074% of the variation was explained cumulatively. The CFA showed that all the fitting indexes reached the standard, and the model fit degree was good. When the Chinese version of the Destructive Leadership Scale was used as calibration, the correlation coefficient was 0.378 (p < 0.001). The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the overall scale were 0.989 and of the two dimensions were 0.969 and 0.987, respectively, with a split-half reliability of 0.966 and test–retest reliability of 0.978.ConclusionThe research results show that the C-ToxBH-NM scale has good reliability and validity and can be used to evaluate the severity of toxic leadership behavior among nursing managers

    Probiotics' effects on gut microbiota in jaundiced neonates: a randomized controlled trial protocol

    IntroductionRecent evidence suggests that blue-light phototherapy impacts gut microbiota composition in jaundiced newborns, leading to disturbances closely related to the therapy's side effects. As a result, gut microbiota may serve as a potential intervention target to mitigate these side effects. In this study, we aim to examine the effects of AB-GG (Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG), Bb-12 (Bifidobacterium animalis Bb-12) and M-16V (Bifidobacterium breve M-16V) and their combination on the intestinal microbiota, metabolomics and phototherapy-related side effects in neonates with jaundice.Methods and analysisA total of 100 jaundiced newborns aged two weeks or younger will be included in this randomized, single-blind (the parents knew, but the neonatologists did not know), single-center controlled trial to receive either 109 colony-forming units of AB-GG, Bb-12, M-16V, a combination of the three probiotics with blue-light phototherapy, or blue-light phototherapy alone. The experimental group will be treated with oral probiotics once daily for 30 days, while the control group will receive only blue-light phototherapy. The follow-up duration will last 30 days. The primary outcomes include changes in gut microbiota, metabolomics, and the incidence of phototherapy side effects, assessed after each phototherapy session, as well as on days 10, 20, and 30.Ethics and disseminationThe study protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of our institution. The findings of this trial will be submitted to a peer-reviewed pediatric journal.     Variants in MME are associated with autosomal-recessive distal hereditary motor neuropathy

Objective: To identify a new genetic cause in patients segregating distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN) with an autosomal recessive pattern. Methods: Whole-exome sequencing was conducted in two siblings and was combined with segregation analysis. Additionally, 83 unrelated dHMN patients with unknown genetic cause were screened. RNA analysis was performed using blood lymphocytes and HEK293 cells transfected with mutant plasmids. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis was applied to the nerve tissue. The enzymatic activities of mutant proteins were measured in the cultured cells to verify the pathogenicity of variants. Results: The clinical features of the patients showed late-onset phenotype of distal motor neuropathy without sensory involvement. We identified that compound heterozygous variants of c.1342C\u27T and c.2071_2072delGCinsTT in the membrane metalloendopeptidase (MME) gene co-segregated with the phenotype in a dHMN family. In an additional group of 83 patients with dHMN, compound heterozygous variants of c.1416+2T\u27C and c.2027C\u27T in MME were identified in one patient. The splice site variant c.1416+2T\u27C results in skipping of exon 13. The stop variant c.1342C\u27T induces mRNA degradation via nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. Transcript levels of MME in the lymphocytes showed no significant differences between the patients and controls. We also identified that MME variants were associated with mild decrease in protein expression in the sural nerve and significant impairments of enzymatic activity. Interpretation: Variants in the MME gene were associated with not only a Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy phenotype but also with an autosomal-recessive dHMN phenotype. Loss of function may play a role in the pathogenesis of dHMN

    Effect of Extraction Temperature on the Functional and Structural Properties of Mullet Scale Gelatin

    The functional property is an important factor to measure the quality of fish gelatin, which directly relates to the practical application range and value of fish gelatin. In order to explore the effect of extraction temperature on the functional properties of mullet scale gelatin, this study used a hot water extraction method. Different temperatures (60, 70, 80, 90, 100 ℃) were examined to assess their impact on the surface morphology of fish scales, fish scale gelatin yield, and functional properties (foaming capacity, emulsifying activity, gel strength, gel temperature, and melting temperature). Furthermore, the structural characteristics of fish scale gelatin were investigated using SDS-PAGE, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that as the extraction temperature increased from 60 ℃ to 100 ℃, the damage to the surface of mullet scales became increasingly severe. The fish scale gelatin yield increased from 31.72% to 50.97%, foaming capacity improved from 23.33% to 73.33%, and emulsifying activity increased from 15.13 m2/g to 17.27 m2/g. However, gel strength, gel temperature, and melting temperature decreased from 677.82 g, 20.80 ℃, and 28.70 ℃ to 372.91 g, 15.80 ℃, and 23.90 ℃, respectively. Additionally, with the increase in extraction temperature, the characteristic bands of mullet scale gelatin α1, α2, and β chains on the electrophoresis pattern became increasingly blurred. The infrared spectroscopy results showed that the fish scale gelatin had characteristic absorption peaks (amide A, amide Ⅰ, amide Ⅱ, and amide Ⅲ), with the wavenumber of amide A first increasing and then decreasing. The scanning electron microscopy results showed that the tightness of the porous grid structure of the fish scale gelatin decreased. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the industrialization of mullet scale gelatin

    Geochemistry of hydrothermal gold deposits: A review

    Mineral assemblages formed during hydrothermal alteration reflect the geochemical composition of ore-forming fluids. Gold is mainly transported in solution as Au–Cl and Au–S complexes. The change of physicochemical conditions such as temperature, pressure, oxygen fugacity, and sulfur fugacity are effective mechanisms for gold precipitation. Gold tends to be concentrated in the vapor phase of fluids at high temperatures and pressures. Au–As and Au–Sb associations are common in gold deposit. Native antimony and/or arsenic – native gold assemblages may precipitate from hydrothermal fluids with low sulfur fugacity. Hydrothermal fluids forming epithermal gold deposits are Au-saturated in most cases, whereas fluids of Carlin-type are Au-undersaturated. Quasi-steady As-bearing pyrite extracts solid solution Au from hydrothermal fluids through absorption. The capability of As-bearing pyrite to absorb Au from under-saturated fluid is the key to the formation of large-scale Carlin-type deposits. With increasing new data, studies on the geochemistry of gold deposits can be used to trace the origin of ore-forming fluids, the source of gold, and the transporting form of Au and other ore-forming elements, such as Si, S, F, Cl, As and Ag
