The Source Detection of 28 September 2018 Sulawesi Tsunami by Using Ionospheric GNSS Total Electron Content Disturbance
The 28 September 2018 magnitude Mw7.8 Palu, Indonesia earthquake (0.178° S, 119.840° E, depth 13 km) occurred at 10:02 UTC. The major earthquake triggered catastrophic liquefaction, landslides, and a near-field tsunami. The ionospheric total electron content (TEC) derived from records of 5 ground-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers is employed to detect tsunami traveling ionospheric disturbances (TTIDs). In total, 15 TTIDs have been detected. The ray-tracing and beamforming techniques are then used to find the TTID source location. The bootstrap method is applied in order to further explore the possible location of the tsunami source based on results of the two techniques, which show the beamforming technique has a slightly better performance on finding possible locations of the tsunami source. Meanwhile, the circle method is employed to examine tsunami signatures of the sea-surface height and video records, and find possible tsunami origin locations. The coincidence of the TTID source location and the tsunami location shows that the ionospheric TEC recorded by local ground-based GNSS receivers can be used to confirm the tsunami occurrence, find the tsunami location, and support the tsunami early warning
Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery: A transtracheal approach for the thoracic cavity in a live canine model
BackgroundThe present study aimed to evaluate the performance of transtracheal thoracic exploration and pericardial window creation in a canine survival model.MethodsTransthoracic exploration was performed in 14 dogs. Under general anesthesia, after an incision in the right lateral wall of the middle–lower portion of the trachea was made, a 9-mm metal tube was advanced into the thoracic cavity. For thoracic cavity exploration and pericardial window creation, a flexible bronchoscope was introduced through the metal tube into the thoracic cavity. After thoracoscopy, a Dumon stent (Novatech, Grasse, France) was used to cover the tracheal incision site and facilitate healing. Animals were evaluated by endoscopy 1 and 2 weeks later. Animals were humanely killed, and necropsy was performed 2 weeks after the transtracheal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery.ResultsFourteen dogs underwent transtracheal thoracic exploration lasting for an average of 110 minutes (range, 80–150), with 3 perioperative deaths. At 2 weeks after pericardial window creation, endoscopy revealed normal healing of the tracheal incision sites in all 11 surviving animals. Necropsy on the 11 animals at 2 weeks showed 9 adhesions around the pericardial window and 5 adhesions around the tracheal incision region. No mediastinitis or abscesses could be identified.ConclusionsTranstracheal thoracic exploration is technically feasible. Increasing surgical experience together with improvement in endoscopic techniques will further facilitate the development of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery for thoracic diseases
Numerical Analysis on Color Preference and Visual Comfort from Eye Tracking Technique
Color preferences in engineering are very important, and there exists relationship between color preference and visual comfort. In this study, there are thirty university students who participated in the experiment, supplemented by pre- and posttest questionnaires, which lasted about an hour. The main purpose of this study is to explore the visual effects of different color assignment with subjective color preferences via eye tracking technology. Eye-movement data through a nonlinear analysis detect slight differences in color preferences
and visual comfort, suggesting effective physiological indicators as extensive future research discussed. Results found that the average pupil size of eye-movement indicators can effectively reflect the differences of color preferences and visual comfort. EPVT: Environment-aware Prompt Vision Transformer for Domain Generalization in Skin Lesion Recognition
Skin lesion recognition using deep learning has made remarkable progress, and
there is an increasing need for deploying these systems in real-world
scenarios. However, recent research has revealed that deep neural networks for
skin lesion recognition may overly depend on disease-irrelevant image artifacts
(i.e. dark corners, dense hairs), leading to poor generalization in unseen
environments. To address this issue, we propose a novel domain generalization
method called EPVT, which involves embedding prompts into the vision
transformer to collaboratively learn knowledge from diverse domains.
Concretely, EPVT leverages a set of domain prompts, each of which plays as a
domain expert, to capture domain-specific knowledge; and a shared prompt for
general knowledge over the entire dataset. To facilitate knowledge sharing and
the interaction of different prompts, we introduce a domain prompt generator
that enables low-rank multiplicative updates between domain prompts and the
shared prompt. A domain mixup strategy is additionally devised to reduce the
co-occurring artifacts in each domain, which allows for more flexible decision
margins and mitigates the issue of incorrectly assigned domain labels.
Experiments on four out-of-distribution datasets and six different biased ISIC
datasets demonstrate the superior generalization ability of EPVT in skin lesion
recognition across various environments. Our code and dataset will be released

Korean Red Ginseng Improves Blood Pressure Stability in Patients with Intradialytic Hypotension
Introduction. Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is a common complication during hemodialysis which may increase mortality risks. Low dose of Korean red ginseng (KRG) has been reported to increase blood pressure. Whether KRG can improve hemodynamic stability during hemodialysis has not been examined. Methods. The 8-week study consisted of two phases: observation phase and active treatment phase. According to prehemodialysis blood pressure (BP), 38 patients with IDH were divided into group A (BP ≥ 140/90 mmHg, n = 18) and group B (BP < 140/90 mmHg, n = 20). Patients were instructed to chew 3.5 gm KRG slices at each hemodialysis session during the 4-week treatment phase. Blood pressure changes, number of sessions disturbed by symptomatic IDH, plasma levels of vasoconstrictors, blood biochemistry, and adverse effects were recorded. Results. KRG significantly reduced the degree of blood pressure drop during hemodialysis (P < 0.05) and the frequency of symptomatic IDH (P < 0.05). More activation of vasoconstrictors (endothelin-1 and angiotensin II) during hemodialysis was found. The postdialytic levels of endothelin-1 and angiotensin II increased significantly (P < 0.01). Conclusion. Chewing KRG renders IDH patients better resistance to acute BP reduction during hemodialysis via activation of vasoconstrictors. Our results suggest that KRG could be an adjuvant treatment for IDH
Use of Multi-Functional Flexible Micro-Sensors for in situ Measurement of Temperature, Voltage and Fuel Flow in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell
Temperature, voltage and fuel flow distribution all contribute considerably to fuel cell performance. Conventional methods cannot accurately determine parameter changes inside a fuel cell. This investigation developed flexible and multi-functional micro sensors on a 40 μm-thick stainless steel foil substrate by using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and embedded them in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) to measure the temperature, voltage and flow. Users can monitor and control in situ the temperature, voltage and fuel flow distribution in the cell. Thereby, both fuel cell performance and lifetime can be increased
AGE-BSA down-regulates endothelial connexin43 gap junctions
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Advanced glycation end products generated in the circulation of diabetic patients were reported to affect the function of vascular wall. We examined the effects of advanced glycation end products-bovine serum albumin (AGE-BSA) on endothelial connexin43 (Cx43) expression and gap-junction communication.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC) treated with a series concentrations of AGE-BSA (0-500 μg/ml) for 24 and 48 hours, Cx43 transcript and Cx43 protein were reduced in a dose dependent manner. In addition, gap-junction communication was reduced. To clarify the mechanisms underlying the down-regulation, MAPKs pathways in HAEC were examined. Both a MEK1 inhibitor (PD98059) and a p38 MAPK inhibitor (SB203580) significantly reversed the reductions of Cx43 mRNA and protein induced by AGE-BSA. Consistently, phosphorylation of ERK and p38 MAPK was enhanced in response to exposure to AGE-BSA. However, all reversions of down-regulated Cx43 by inhibitors did not restore the functional gap-junction communication.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>AGE-BSA down-regulated Cx43 expression in HAEC, mainly through reduced Cx43 transcription, and the process involved activation of ERK and p38 MAPK.</p
