Topological Semimetal-Insulator Quantum Phase Transition in Zintl Compounds Ba2X (X=Si, Ge)
By first-principles calculations, we find that Ba2X(X=Si, Ge) hosts a
topological semimetal phase with one nodal ring in the kx=0 plane, which is
protected by the glide mirror symmetry when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is
ignored. The corresponding drumheadlike surface flat band appears on the (100)
surface in surface Green function calculation. Furthermore, a
topological-semimetal-to-insulator transition (TSMIT) is found. The nodal line
semimetal would evolve into topological insulator as SOC is turned on. The
topologically protected metallic surface states emerge around the Gamma=0
point, which could be tuned into topologically-trivial insulator state by more
than 3% hydrostatic strain. These results reveal a new category of materials
showing quantum phase transition between topological semimetal and insulator,
and tunability through elastic strain engineering.Comment: 14 pages. 4 figure
Reinforced Continual Learning
Most artificial intelligence models have limiting ability to solve new tasks
faster, without forgetting previously acquired knowledge. The recently emerging
paradigm of continual learning aims to solve this issue, in which the model
learns various tasks in a sequential fashion. In this work, a novel approach
for continual learning is proposed, which searches for the best neural
architecture for each coming task via sophisticatedly designed reinforcement
learning strategies. We name it as Reinforced Continual Learning. Our method
not only has good performance on preventing catastrophic forgetting but also
fits new tasks well. The experiments on sequential classification tasks for
variants of MNIST and CIFAR-100 datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach
outperforms existing continual learning alternatives for deep networks
Low rank approximation method for perturbed linear systems with applications to elliptic type stochastic PDEs
In this paper, we propose a low rank approximation method for efficiently
solving stochastic partial differential equations. Specifically, our method
utilizes a novel low rank approximation of the stiffness matrices, which can
significantly reduce the computational load and storage requirements associated
with matrix inversion without losing accuracy. To demonstrate the versatility
and applicability of our method, we apply it to address two crucial uncertainty
quantification problems: stochastic elliptic equations and optimal control
problems governed by stochastic elliptic PDE constraints. Based on varying
dimension reduction ratios, our algorithm exhibits the capability to yield a
high precision numerical solution for stochastic partial differential
equations, or provides a rough representation of the exact solutions as a
pre-processing phase. Meanwhile, our algorithm for solving stochastic optimal
control problems allows a diverse range of gradient-based unconstrained
optimization methods, rendering it particularly appealing for computationally
intensive large-scale problems. Numerical experiments are conducted and the
results provide strong validation of the feasibility and effectiveness of our
algorithm
Public Higher Education Governing Boards Composition and Regional Difference in U.S
[EN] Using The Public Higher Education Boards Database designed by Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) in 2008, this paper reviewed prior studies of governing boards and investigated regional differences of boards' characteristics including board type, selection method, board composition, provision condition, term length, supervision, and meeting frequency. The results show tha: (1) highly centralized state university governance with more political control exist in West and Middle West; (2) governing boards in Northeast are more autonomous with high percentage of alumni and self-perpetuating members and less political affiliations; (3) more faculty participations appear in South and West, and most Middle West boards do not have removal process and longer length of term.Park, HJ.; Zhu, Q.
