    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate how different types of triad structures, and the management mechanisms adopted by the focal company, affect cooperative performance. Design/methodology/approach – This paper uses a social network perspective to examine the triad management phenomenon in the military avionics maintenance context, which is closely associated with the field of operations management. Findings – This paper demonstrates that different triad structures and management mechanisms influence perceived cooperative performance. Four main findings emerged: in a triad, a firm playing a bridging role perceives higher cooperative performance than when playing a peripheral role in the triad or being located in a fully connected triad. When a firm plays the bridging role in a triad, and has a high level of trust, this leads to higher perceived cooperative performance. When a firm plays a peripheral role in a triad, high levels of coordination mechanism combined with high levels of trust result in higher levels of perceived cooperative performance. In a fully linked triad, when the coordination mechanism is well developed, the level of trust is high, so that the resulting level of perceived cooperation is high. Originality/value – This paper extends the knowledge of triad management by providing an in-depth study of a well-defined network setting with exceptionally high-level access to the most senior executives. In practice, this paper shows how to manage differen

The interaction between prM and E proteins in flavivirus-infected cells is a major driving force for the assembly of flavivirus particles. We used site-directed mutagenesis to study the potential role of the transmembrane domains of the prM proteins of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in prM-E heterodimerization as well as subviral particle formation. Alanine insertion scanning mutagenesis within the GXXXG motif in the first transmembrane segment of JEV prM protein affected the prM-E heterodimerization; its specificity was confirmed by replacing the two glycines of the GXXXG motif with alanine, leucine and valine. The GXXXG motif was found to be conserved in the JEV serocomplex viruses but not other flavivirus groups. These mutants with alanine inserted in the two prM transmembrane segments all impaired subviral particle formation in cell cultures. The prM transmembrane domains of JEV may play importation roles in prM-E heterodimerization and viral particle assembly

Assessing Computational Amino Acid β-Turn Propensities with a Phage-Displayed Combinatorial Library and Directed Evolution

SummaryStructure propensities of amino acids are important determinants in guiding proteins' local and global structure formation. We constructed a phage display library—a hexa-HIS tag upstream of a CXXC (X stands for any of the 20 natural amino acids) motif appending N-terminal to the minor capsid protein pIII of M13KE filamentous phage—and developed a novel directed-evolution procedure to select for amino acid sequences forming increasingly stable β-turns in the disulfide-bridged CXXC motif. The sequences that emerged from the directed-evolution cycles were in good agreement with type II β-turn propensities derived from surveys of known protein structures, in particular, Pro-Gly forming a type II β-turn. The agreement strongly supported the notion that β-turn formation plays an active role in initiating local structure folding in proteins

Background: IGF-1 may be an important factor in bone remodeling, but its mechanism of action on osteoclasts during orthodontic tooth movement is complex and unclear. Methodology: The closed-coil spring was placed between the left maxillary first molar and upper incisors with a force of 50 g to establish an orthodontic movement model. Eighty SD rats were randomized to receive phosphate buffer saline or 400 ng rhIGF-1 in the lateral buccal mucosa of the left maxillary first molar every two days. Tissue sections were stained for tartrate-resistant acidic phosphatase (TRAP), the number of TRAP-positive cells was estimated and tooth movement measured. Results: The rhIGF-1 group exhibited evidential bone resorption and lacuna appeared on the alveolar bone compared to the control group. Moreover, the number of osteoclasts in compression side of the periodontal ligament in the rhIGF-1 group peaked at day 4 (11.37±0.95 compared to 5.28±0.47 in the control group) after the orthodontic force was applied and was significantly higher than that of the control group (p<0.01). Furthermore, the distance of tooth movement in the rhIGF-1 group was significantly larger than that of the control group from day 4 to day 14 (p<0.01), suggesting that rhIGF-1 accelerated orthodontic tooth movement. Conclusion: Our study has showed that rhIGF-1 could stimulate the formation of osteoclasts in the periodontal ligament, and accelerate bone remodeling and orthodontic tooth movement

In 2015, Taiwan announced the establishment of “Pre-established Medical Processes” and related regulations to assist nurse practitioners in the clinical tasks, maintain medical quality and patient safety, and provide protection in clinical practice. However, the effectiveness of implementation still needs to be improved and strengthened. This study adopts the TAM and the TTF as the research framework, and a cross-sectional design. The questionnaires are administered to the professional nurse practitioners in the hospitals of central Taiwan. A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed, and Smart PLS 3.0 and SPSS 24.0 were both applied to verify interpretability. The questionnaire recovery rate was 88.3%, and the overall predictive power was 65.2%. Technological characteristics and TTF had a significant impact on perceived usefulness

For a long time, funeral facility sites and management by the local government in Taiwan have been lacking cross-regional resource integration and location based research. As a result, funeral facility locations have become inappropriate, excessive or insufficient in supply, etc. New Taipei City is located adjacent to Taipei City and Keelung City. The number of funeral facilities is as high as 264. How to plan funeral facilities appropriately and in cooperation with neighboring local governments has become an important issue for the New Taipei City government. This study reviews the theory of regional cooperation, and the main topic of the research is the public columbarium buildings and public cemeteries in New Taipei City. In addition, the service radius of funeral facilities in the three cities is studied to identify both service area and distribution, as while as using a time series model to estimate the supply and demand situation of public cemeteries and public columbarium buildings. It is intended that the result may be used to develop a regional cooperation strategy for future funeral facilities in New Taipei City. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the location of existing funeral facilities in New Taipei City are uneven, resulting in the residents\u27 use of funeral facilities in other cities; (2) the funeral facilities\u27 percentage of use is uneven in New Taipei City, with some regions facing imbalance between supply and demand by 2025; (3) the funeral facilities in New Taipei City can be developed according to four aspects and nine strategies through regional planning, renewed facilities, management systems and regional cooperation; (4) a public cemetery near Taipei City or Keelung City should be planned as a regional cooperative demonstration project; (5) the three cities should reduce or standardise the charges (such as exemption of cross-county fees) as a priority policy for encouraging regional cooperation

The Improved Algorithm of Fast Panorama Stitching for Image Sequence and Reducing the Distortion Errors

    Get PDF
The traditional image stitching result based on the SIFT feature points extraction, to a certain extent, has distortion errors. The panorama, especially, would get more seriously distorted when compositing a panoramic result using a long image sequence. To achieve the goal of creating a high-quality panorama, the improved algorithm is proposed in this paper, including altering the way of selecting the reference image and putting forward a method that can compute the transformation matrix for any image of the sequence to align with the reference image in the same coordinate space. Additionally, the improved stitching method dynamically selects the next input image based on the number of SIFT matching points. Compared with the traditional stitching process, the improved method increases the number of matching feature points and reduces SIFT feature detection area of the reference image. The experimental results show that the improved method can not only accelerate the efficiency of image stitching processing, but also reduce the panoramic distortion errors, and finally we can obtain a pleasing panoramic result

Utilization of statins and aspirin among patients with diabetes and hyperlipidemia: Taiwan, 1998–2006

AbstractBackgroundThe proper use of statins and aspirin decrease the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) among patients with diabetes (DM) and hyperlipidemia. The purpose of this study was to analyze the time trends and determinants of prescribing statins and aspirin among patients with DM and hyperlipidemia in medical practice in Taiwan.MethodsA cohort of 21,667 patients with DM and hyperlipidemia during the period from 1998 to 2006 was identified by using data of ambulatory care claims from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Database. The dataset was categorized into two equal calendar periods: Period 1 (September 1998–June 2002) and Period 2 (July 2002–April 2006). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the independent determinants associated with receipt of lipid-lowering agents and aspirin among these patients.ResultsThere were significant increases in the prescribing of statins (OR 1.78; 95% CI 1.66−1.91) and aspirin (OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.50−1.59) in Period 2 as compared with Period 1. Nevertheless, 30% of patients with coexisting CHD neither received statins nor aspirin. Only 15% to 25% of DM patients with hyperlipidemia and CHD received the combined treatment with aspirin and statin. In multivariate logistic regression, we found that women received aspirin less frequently than men. Old patients (>45 years) with concomitant CHD were more likely to receive statins and aspirin.ConclusionDespite the increasing trend in the use of statins and aspirin in DM patients with hyperlipidemia in Taiwan, the improvements were at best modest, particularly for secondary prevention. Our data indicate the need for continued efforts to improve the utilization of these drugs in daily practice
