Research Note: Bayesian Record Linkage with Application to Chinese Immigrants in Raleigh-Durham (ChIRDU) Study

Many population surveys do not provide information on respondents' residential addresses, instead offering coarse geographies like zip code or higher aggregations. However, fine resolution geography can be beneficial for characterizing neighborhoods, especially for relatively rare populations such as immigrants. One way to obtain such information is to link survey records to records in auxiliary databases that include residential addresses by matching on variables common to both files. In this research note, we present an approach based on probabilistic record linkage that enables matching survey participants in the Chinese Immigrants in Raleigh-Durham (ChIRDU) Study to records from InfoUSA, an information provider of residential records. The two files use different Chinese name romanization practices, which we address through a novel and generalizable strategy for constructing records' pairwise comparison vectors for romanized names. Using a fully Bayesian record linkage model, we characterize the geospatial distribution of Chinese immigrants in the Raleigh-Durham area

Preparations and applications of single color centers in diamond

As a non-classical light source, single-photon source plays an essential role in the foundation of quantum physics and has been attracting a lot of attention of researchers over the world. Up to now, among different kinds of single-photon sources, single color centers in the diamond are very outstanding for the stable emission at room temperature as well as the spin controllability at ambient environment. Those color centers in the diamond with excellent properties are usually formed by impurity atoms and lattice vacancies. Nowadays, complex environments are necessary to the preparation of color centers generally. This restricts the research and applications of those color centers to a certain extent. Therefore, to develop efficient and high-precision fabrication methods of single color centers in the diamond at ambient environment is a need. On this condition, femtosecond (fs) laser process, a mature micro-nano processing technology, have been demonstrated to be a feasible, efficient, and fast production of the color centers in the diamond. This review discusses the state of the art in the preparation of single color centers in diamond and their applications in different areas

Automatic Robot Trajectory for Thermal-Sprayed Complex Surfaces

    No full text
Automatic trajectory generation for thermal spray application is highly desirable for today's automotive manufacturing. Automatic robot trajectory for free-form surfaces to satisfy the coating uniform is still highly challenging due to the complex geometry of free-form surfaces. The purpose of this study is to present and implement a method for automatic generation of robot trajectory according to the given spray parameters on polygon profile and complex curved free-form surfaces, such as torch speed, spray distance, spray angle, and so on. This software development foundation is an Add-In programme of RobotStudio, which is off-line programming and simulation software of ABB Company. The experimental results show that the robot trajectory can be generated rapidly, accurately, and automatically on the complex geometries by this method

After anthocyanin synthesis, a variety of anthocyanin compounds are produced through further methylation, glycosylation, and acylation. However, the effect of the potato methylase gene on anthocyanin biosynthesis has not been reported. Red and purple mutation types appear in tubers of the potato cultivar ‘Purple Viking’ with chimeric skin phenotypes. In this study, transcriptome and anthocyanin metabolome analyses were performed on skin of Purple Viking tubers and associated mutants. According to the metabolome analysis, the transformation of delphinidin into malvidin-3-O-glucoside and petunidin 3-O-glucoside and that of cyanidin into rosinidin O-hexoside and peonidin-3-O-glucoside were hindered in red tubers. Expression of methyltransferase gene OMT30376 was significantly lower in red tubers than in purple ones, whereas the methylation level of OMT30376 was significantly higher in red tubers. In addition, red skin appeared in tubers from purple tuber plants treated with S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), indicating the difference between purple and red was caused by the methylation degree of the gene OMT30376. Thus, the results of the study suggest that the OMT30376 gene is involved in the transformation of anthocyanins in potato tubers. The results also provide an important reference to reveal the regulatory mechanisms of anthocyanin biosynthesis and transformation.</p
