The unambiguous six-step syntheses of 7H-phenaleno[2,1-b]thiophene and 7H-phenaleno[1,2-x]thiophene are described.  A study of the reaction of thiophene-3,4-dicarbonyl chloride with benzene and aluminum chloride was made.   A nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of the degree of homoallylic coupling between the methylene groups in the following thiophene analogs of 9,10-dihydroanthracene is reported
