Gazelle seasonal mobility in the Jordanian steppe: The use of dental isotopes and microwear as environmental markers, applied to Epipalaeolithic Kharaneh IV
The Early/Middle Epipalaeolithic aggregation site of Kharaneh IV in the east Jordan steppe is one of the largest of the period, showing repeated use, high degrees of site investment, and relatively prolonged periods of occupation. Hunters relied heavily on the single prey species, Gazella subgutturosa. This paper reports on isotopic analyses of gazelle teeth, drawn from the Kharaneh IV assemblage, to explore the seasonal and spatial distribution of gazelle in life and examine models of long-distance seasonal gazelle migrations. Dental microwear analysis is also employed to assess hunting seasons.
Results from sequential isotope analyses of 11 Epipalaeolithic gazelle molars show that, with one exception, gazelle did not move seasonally from the limestone steppe onto other geologies, nor did they seasonally relocate to areas with different climate regimes. Rather, seasonal herd mobility seems to have been local, meaning animals would have been available in the vicinity of Kharaneh IV year-round. Results from 19 microwear analyses show some gazelle to have died in spring when grass graze was available, whilst others had been browsing around their time of death, indicating non-spring hunting. Microwear evidence thus suggests gazelle were hunted in more than one restricted season. The implications of these new datasets for hunter-gatherer use of the steppe, and potential hunting methods, is highlighted
Writing and Reading antiferromagnetic MnAu: N\'eel spin-orbit torques and large anisotropic magnetoresistance
Antiferromagnets are magnetically ordered materials which exhibit no net
moment and thus are insensitive to magnetic fields. Antiferromagnetic
spintronics aims to take advantage of this insensitivity for enhanced
stability, while at the same time active manipulation up to the natural THz
dynamic speeds of antiferromagnets is possible, thus combining exceptional
storage density and ultra-fast switching. However, the active manipulation and
read-out of the N\'eel vector (staggered moment) orientation is challenging.
Recent predictions have opened up a path based on a new spin-orbit torque,
which couples directly to the N\'eel order parameter. This N\'eel spin-orbit
torque was first experimentally demonstrated in a pioneering work using
semimetallic CuMnAs. Here we demonstrate for MnAu, a good conductor with a
high ordering temperature suitable for applications, reliable and reproducible
switching using current pulses and readout by magnetoresistance measurements.
The symmetry of the torques agrees with theoretical predictions and a large
read-out magnetoresistance effect of more than ~ is reproduced by
ab initio transport calculations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Polarization transfer in HeH: is the ratio modified in medium ?
Polarization observables in the HeH
reaction are calculated using accurate three- and four-nucleon bound-state wave
functions, a realistic model for the nuclear electromagnetic current operator,
and a treatment of final-state-interactions with an optical potential. In
contrast to earlier studies, no significant discrepancies are found between
theory and experiment both for the ratio of transverse to longitudinal
polarization transfers and for the induced polarization, when free-nucleon
electromagnetic form factors are used in the current operator. The present
results challenge the current interpretation of the experimental data in terms
of medium-modified form factors.Comment: 4 pages and 2 figue
Anisotropic s-wave superconductivity in MgB_2
It has recently been observed that MgB_2 is a superconductor with a high
transition temperature. Here we propose a model of anisotropic s-wave
superconductivity which consistently describes the observed properties of this
compound, including the thermodynamic and optical response in sintered MgB_2
wires. We also determine the shape of the quasiparticle density of states and
the anisotropy of the upper critical field and the superfluid density which
should be detectable once single-crystal samples become available.Comment: RevTex, 10 pages with 4 eps figure
Optical Properties of Heavy Fermion Systems with SDW Order
The dynamical conductivity , reflectivity , and
tunneling density of states of strongly correlated systems (like
heavy fermions) with a spin-density wave (SDW) magnetic order are studied as a
function of impurity scattering rate and temperature. The theory is generalized
to include strong coupling effects in the SDW order. The results are discussed
in the light of optical experiments on heavy-fermion SDW materials. With some
modifications the proposed theory is applicable also to heavy fermions with
localized antiferromagnetic (LAF) order.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
Radiative capture of protons by deuterons
The differential cross section for radiative capture of protons by deuterons
is calculated using different realistic NN interactions. We compare our results
with the available experimental data below . Excellent agreement
is found when taking into account meson exchange currents, dipole and
quadrupole contributions, and the full initial state interaction. There is only
a small difference between the magnitudes of the cross sections for the
different potentials considered. The angular distributions, however, are
practically potential independent.Comment: 4 pages (twocolumn), 4 postscript figures included, submitted for

Correlated Strength in Nuclear Spectral Function
We have carried out an (e,e'p) experiment at high momentum transfer and in
parallel kinematics to measure the strength of the nuclear spectral function
S(k,E) at high nucleon momenta k and large removal energies E. This strength is
related to the presence of short-range and tensor correlations, and was known
hitherto only indirectly and with considerable uncertainty from the lack of
strength in the independent-particle region. This experiment confirms by direct
measurement the correlated strength predicted by theory.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
Inclusive Electron-Nucleus Scattering at Large Momentum Transfer
Inclusive electron scattering is measured with 4.045 GeV incident beam energy
from C, Fe and Au targets. The measured energy transfers and angles correspond
to a kinematic range for Bjorken and momentum transfers from . When analyzed in terms of the y-scaling function the data show
for the first time an approach to scaling for values of the initial nucleon
momenta significantly greater than the nuclear matter Fermi-momentum (i.e. GeV/c).Comment: 5 pages TEX, 5 Postscript figures also available at
