    On the genericity of spacetime singularities

    We consider here the genericity aspects of spacetime singularities that occur in cosmology and in gravitational collapse. The singularity theorems (that predict the occurrence of singularities in general relativity) allow the singularities of gravitational collapse to be either visible to external observers or covered by an event horizon of gravity. It is shown that the visible singularities that develop as final states of spherical collapse are generic.     Nature of singularity in Einstein-massless scalar theory

    We study the static and spherically symmetric exact solution of the Einstein-massless scalar equations given by Janis, Newman and Winicour.     Electronic reconstruction and enhanced superconductivity at La1.6−x_{1.6-x}Nd0.4_{0.4}Srx_{x}CuO4_{4}/La1.55_{1.55}Sr0.45_{0.45}CuO4_{4} bilayer interface

    We report enhanced superconductivity in bilayer thin films consisting of superconducting La1.6−x_{1.6-x}Nd0.4_{0.4}Srx_{x}CuO4_{4} with 0.06 ≤x<\leq x< 0.20 and metallic but non-superconducting La1.55_{1.55}Sr0.45_{0.45}CuO4_{4}. These bilayers show a maximum increase in superconducting transition temperature (TcT_c) of more than 200% for xx = 0.06 while no change in TcT_c is observed for the bilayers with x≥x\geq 0.20. The analysis of the critical current and kinetic inductance data suggests 2-3 unit cells thick interfacial layer electronically perturbed to have a higher TcT_c. A simple charge transfer model with cation intermixing explains the observed TcT_c in bilayers. Still the unusually large thickness of interfacial superconducting layers can not be explained in terms of this model. We believe the stripe relaxation as well as the proximity effect also influence the superconductivity of the interface

    Multi-frequency scatter broadening evolution of pulsars - I

    We present multi-wavelength scatter broadening observations of 47 pulsars, made with the Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope (GMRT), Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) and Long Wavelength Array (LWA). The GMRT observations have been made in the phased array mode at 148, 234, and 610 MHz and the ORT observations at 327 MHz. The LWA data sets have been obtained from the LWA pulsar data archive. The broadening of each pulsar as a function of observing frequency provides the frequency scaling index, α\alpha. The estimations of α\alpha have been obtained for 39 pulsars, which include entirely new estimates for 31 pulsars. This study increases the total sample of pulsars available with α\alpha estimates by ∼\sim50\%. The overall distribution of α\alpha with the dispersion measure (DM) of pulsar shows interesting variations, which are consistent with the earlier studies. However, for a given value of DM a range of α\alpha values are observed, indicating the characteristic turbulence along each line of sight. For each pulsar, the estimated level of turbulence, Cne2C^{2}_{n_e}, has also been compared with α\alpha and DM. Additionally, we compare the distribution of α\alpha with the theoretically predicated model to infer the general characteristics of the ionized interstellar medium (ISM). Nearly 65\% of the pulsars show a flatter index (i.e., α<4.4\alpha < 4.4) than that is expected from the Kolmogorov turbulence model. Moreover, the group of pulsars having flatter index is typically associated with an enhanced value of Cne2C^{2}_{n_e} than those with steeper index.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables.     Agricultural diversification in India and role of urbanization

    Indian agriculture is diversifying during the last two decades towards High-Value Commodities (HVCs) i.e., fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, and fish products. The pace has been accelerated during the decade of 1990s. HVCs account for a large share in the total value of agricultural production. Supply and demand side factors coupled with infrastructural development and innovative institutions drive these changes. In this paper, the focus is on diversification towards HVCs in the context of urbanization. Group of urban districts (districts with >1.5 million urban population) have a higher share of HVCs compared to the urban-surrounded (near urban districts) and other districts (districts in the hinterland). Among the HVCs, vegetables and meat products have a higher share in urban districts compared to the other two groups. Milk production is more widespread due to excellent network of co-operatives and infrastructure facilities. Using GIS (geographic Information System) approach it was found that urban-surrounded districts with better road network connection to urban centers have been able to diversify towards HVC's to meet the demand in the urban centers. Model results further confirm these findings. Thus, urbanization is a strong demand side driver promoting HVCs. Since urban population is growing at more than 3% per annum, demand for HVCs will drive their production. The analysis has also brought out regional variations in HVCs across different districts in the country that has implications on regional development and planning, and consequently on public and private sector investment strategies.
