Literature and Popularity: Shakespeare as a Mediator between the ‘Class’ and the ‘Mass’

    Get PDF
Shakespeare has enjoyed immense popularity and recognition among ‘elite’ critics like Ben Jonson in his own time, and Dr Samuel Johnson, Coleridge, Matthew Arnold, T S Eliot among others, till Harold Bloom in the 21st century, not to mention the enormous body of film adaptations, translations, music adaptations and various other mass-media through which he still dominates the ‘popular culture’. This is the reason why his case becomes a curious one as far as literature and popularity are concerned. The new century has brought a whole host of new technological artefacts within hand’s reach of all but the poorest denizens of the city street – the cell phone, the iPad, and attendant applications that help us navigate the city and connect and network cyber and physical spaces. These technologies are creating new cultures, material and aesthetic, cyber and physical space-making of new kinds that do not simply alter older traditions but transmogrify them into new shapes and flows. This paper aims at studying how we define the popular aspect of literature. How have erudite and popular cultures been studied in the 20th and 21st centuries? Where does Shakespeare stand in the debate

In this digital era of abundant information production, there is an increase in demand of high - quality digital information. With the greater demand from users to serve their information needs, the job of the librarian has become critical in terms of delivering services to its patrons. The content richness of the website is the key factor to attract users and facilitate them in navigating through its web pages. These websites are playing a key role in helping students and faculty to carry out their study and academic work. Thus the need arises to continuously evaluate these web pages to keep them updated or use. This study evaluates 25 selected educational college library web pages in Goa from the usability perspective. For this study 9 main parameters were used to evaluate library web pages. The checklist was made for measuring its various dimensions regarding its usability, validity, efficiency and, effectiveness. The results showed that the web pages are partially usable and hence there is a need to improve their usability. The study further suggested evaluating these web pages to check the relevancy and validity of the information available on the web page. The study revealed that most of the college websites provide an Online Public Access Catalogue but none of the websites mention the availability of plagiarism checking facilities. The study has shown that web pages are lagging in exploiting the potential of the library portal. It also suggests keeping the web page updated as it is frequently used by college students and faculty. This study is capable of providing a basic framework that can be used to design and improve academic library web pages

To scrutinize the Status of Library Staff in the High School Libraries in Goa

Few studies have reported the status of high school libraries from Goa. Keeping the importance of early education the present study highlights major issues through qualitative as well as quantitative methods. This study focuses on the library staff of High school libraries, their qualification and pay scale. Librarians in High schools are often treated as non–teaching staff and are given office-related clerical work. The authorities have shown negligence in setting up the required standards for High school libraries in Goa. No proper guidelines are formed which could help librarians to develop their school library. It was found that the majority of the aided-High school libraries do not have a permanent school librarian. The government high schools do not have the post of a school librarian. A teacher or non-teaching staff are given authority to handle the library work. The required qualification for the post is the certificate course in library science hence the pay scale given is also much lesser and not as of the status of the teachers. Subsequently, they are not considered as same as the teachers. This study concluded by suggesting some of the measures to be taken to develop the status of the librarians as well as the libraries

Mutual Coupling Reduction in Microstrip Patch Antenna Array by simple I-Shaped DGS using Full Wave Electromagnetic Simulator

    Get PDF
When a number of antennas are placed in an array formation, the mutual coupling between the array elements becomes a critical issue. The Microstrip Patch Antennas are useful in sending the onboard parameters to the ground, under different operating conditions. The main aim is to maintain the mutual coupling suppressing structure to the simplest form, while providing a great amount of reduction in the mutual coupling of patch antennas. The idea is to use a Defected Ground Structure (DGS), placed at the bottom of the substrate. It greatly reduces the mutual coupling between the antenna elements, thereby enhancing the antenna performance. The introduction of DGS does not affect other characteristics of the antenna array. The DGS and the normal patch antenna is simulated using CST (Computer Simulation Technology) antenna simulation software. Once an antenna design is finalized, their operational characteristics remains unchanged during the use. DOI: 10.17762/ijritcc2321-8169.150519

Change in refractive status of the patients undergoing phacoemulsification surgery.

This study was carried out with the objective of finding refractive status of patients undergoing phacoemulsification surgery for cataract extraction. Success of cataract surgery can be quantified with the improvement in visual acuity with least amount of refractive error. Prospective study of 44 patients was done pre operatively and with subsequent follow up in the first, third and eighth week post operatively. Pre and post operative evaluation was carried out in terms of visual acuity, refractive error and corneal curvature. Among patients undergoing surgery, 91.0% achieved visual acuity of 6/9 or better at eighth week follow up 73.3% of patients had astigmatism of 1.25 dioptric cylinder or less. Keratometry readings showed insignificant variability in the preoperative and postoperative period (p > 0.05). This confirms that phacoemulsification surgery does not change the corneal curvature significantly and thereby induces less amount of astigmatism

Efficient Energy Management System with Storage

    Get PDF
This paper deals with energy management strategy for AC/DC grid connected network using artificial intelligent techniques. Proposed energy management system aims at maximum utilization of energy sources considering load demand, availability of AC mains, and state of charge of battery. A Spartan 6 FPGA controller is utilized for battery scheduling process which schedules the rate of charge and discharge of battery. It also limits the battery from over charging and deep discharge and thus increasing lifespan of battery. A innovative Variable Frequency SPWM technique utilized to increase efficiency of system. It guarantees power to critical load when AC mains fail. The EMS system accomplishes peak power control by supplying battery power to local load along with AC mains when electricity cost is more. The proposed model simulated using matlab/simulink environment and result found to be better than literature modules

Auto face annotation is important in abounding absolute apple advice administration systems. Face tagging in images and videos enjoys abounding abeyant applications in multimedia advice retrieval. Face comment is a meadow of face apprehension and recognition. Mining abominably labeled facial images on the internet shows abeyant classic appear auto face annotation. This blazon of classic motivates the new assay botheration of defended authentication. The ambition of the arrangement is to comment disregarded faces in images and videos with the words that best alarm the image. A framework called seek based face comment (SBFA) provides the way to abundance abominably labeled facial images. Facial images that are accessible on Apple Wide Web (WWW) or the angel database created by the aegis administration can be annotated. A one arduous botheration with the seek based face comment arrangement is how finer accomplish comment by advertisement agnate facial images and their anemic labels which are blatant and incomplete. To affected this botheration proposed admission uses unsupervised characterization clarification (ULR) to clarify the labels of web facial images. To acceleration up the proposed arrangement a absorption based approximation algorithm is used. Uses of comment will advice for user to seek admiration angel and video. As well if arrangement gets implemented in amusing arrangement again it will affected the check of accepted absolute arrangement which tags manually
