Spleen-Resident CD4+ and CD4− CD8α− Dendritic Cell Subsets Differ in Their Ability to Prime Invariant Natural Killer T Lymphocytes

One important function of conventional dendritic cells (cDC) is their high capacity to capture, process and present Ag to T lymphocytes. Mouse splenic cDC subtypes, including CD8α+ and CD8α− cDC, are not identical in their Ag presenting and T cell priming functions. Surprisingly, few studies have reported functional differences between CD4− and CD4+ CD8α− cDC subsets. We show that, when loaded in vitro with OVA peptide or whole protein, and in steady-state conditions, splenic CD4− and CD4+ cDC are equivalent in their capacity to prime and direct CD4+ and CD8+ T cell differentiation. In contrast, in response to α-galactosylceramide (α-GalCer), CD4− and CD4+ cDC differentially activate invariant Natural Killer T (iNKT) cells, a population of lipid-reactive non-conventional T lymphocytes. Both cDC subsets equally take up α-GalCer in vitro and in vivo to stimulate the iNKT hybridoma DN32.D3, the activation of which depends solely on TCR triggering. On the other hand, and relative to their CD4+ counterparts, CD4− cDC more efficiently stimulate primary iNKT cells, a phenomenon likely due to differential production of co-factors (including IL-12) by cDC. Our data reveal a novel functional difference between splenic CD4+ and CD4− cDC subsets that may be important in immune responses

Le piégeage lumineux, moyen d'approche de la faune entomologique d'un grand fleuve (Ephéméroptères, en particulier)

Three light-traps which were especially used to study Ephemeroptera are described. Each of them includes a lamp with an ultraviolet and visible output, a device to direct the insects attracted towards a trough half-filled with water. In this trough, the females occasionally lay their eggs. Records of water and air temperatures, wind velocity and direction, air humidity and pressure, make it possible to interpret the results which are influenced by meteorological conditions. The data were collected over successive years, since 1958, on the Rhône river, in Lyon. The first results show that this light-trapping method is a good one for studying the entomological fauna of a large river.Trois types de pièges lumineux, utilisés en particulier pour l'étude des Ephéméroptères, sont décrits. Tous sont équipés d'une lampe émettant des radiations ultra¬ violettes et visibles, d'un dispositif servant à canaliser les insectes attirés vers une chambre de capture contenant un bac à eau servant à récupérer les pontes éventuelles des femelles. La température de l'eau et de l'air, la vitesse et la direction du vent, l'hygrométrie et la pression barométrique sont enregistrées afin de permettre l'interprétation des résultats, très influencés par les conditions météorologiques. Une campagne de piègeage a été particulièrement menée sur le Rhône à Lyon, depuis 1958 jusqu'à nos jours. Les résultats en cours de dépouillement montrent que le piègeage lumineux est une méthode intéressante d'approche de la faune entomologique d'un grand fleuve.Fontaine Josette. A case of chronic ulceration of the scalp in a 52 yr old man is reported. The histologic picture corresponds to perofolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens. However, the clinical picture differs and is to be compared with the observation of Nordlund and Klaus.
