Put three and three together: Triangle-driven community detection
Community detection has arisen as one of the most relevant topics in the field of graph data mining due to its applications in many fields such as biology, social networks, or network traffic analysis. Although the existing metrics used to quantify the quality of a community work well in general, under some circumstances, they fail at correctly capturing such notion. The main reason is that these metrics consider the internal community edges as a set, but ignore how these actually connect the vertices of the community. We propose the Weighted Community Clustering (WCC), which is a new community metric that takes the triangle instead of the edge as the minimal structural motif indicating the presence of a strong relation in a graph. We theoretically analyse WCC in depth and formally prove, by means of a set of properties, that the maximization of WCC guarantees communities with cohesion and structure. In addition, we propose Scalable Community Detection (SCD), a community detection algorithm based on WCC, which is designed to be fast and scalable on SMP machines, showing experimentally that WCC correctly captures the concept of community in social networks using real datasets. Finally, using ground-truth data, we show that SCD provides better quality than the best disjoint community detection algorithms of the state of the art while performing faster.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Influence of the controller design on the accuracy of a forward dynamic simulation of human gait
The analysis of a captured motion can be addressed by means of forward or inverse dynamics approaches. For this purpose, a 12 segment 2D model with 14 degrees of freedom is developed and both methods are implemented using multibody dynamics techniques. The inverse dynamic analysis uses the experimentally captured motion to calculate the joint torques produced by the musculoskeletal system during the movement. This information is then used as input data for a forward dynamic analysis without any control design. This approach is able to reach the desired pattern within half cycle. In order to achieve the simulation of the complete gait cycle two different control strategies are implemented to stabilize all degrees of freedom: a proportional derivative (PD) control and a computed torque control (CTC). The selection of the control parameters is presented in this work: a kinematic perturbation is used for tuning PD gains, and pole placement techniques are used in order to determine the CTC parameters. A performance evaluation of the two controllers is done in order to quantify the accuracy of the simulated motion and the control torques needed when using one or the other control approach to track a known human walking pattern.Postprint (author's final draft
Nonexistence of almost Moore digraphs of degrees 4 and 5 with self-repeats
An almost Moore (d,k)-digraph is a regular digraph of degree d>1, diameter k>1 and order N(d,k)=d+d2+⋯+dk. So far, their existence has only been shown for k=2, whilst it is known that there are no such digraphs for k=3, 4 and for d=2, 3 when k≥3. Furthermore, under certain assumptions, the nonexistence for the remaining cases has also been shown. In this paper, we prove that (4,k) and (5,k)-almost Moore digraphs with self-repeats do not exist for k≥5.Nacho López: Supported in part by grants PID2020-115442RB-I00 and 2021 SGR-00434.

Celebrity games
We introduce Celebrity games, a new model of network creation games. In this model players have weights (W being the sum of all the player's weights) and there is a critical distance ß as well as a link cost a. The cost incurred by a player depends on the cost of establishing links to other players and on the sum of the weights of those players that remain farther than the critical distance. Intuitively, the aim of any player is to be relatively close (at a distance less than ß ) from the rest of players, mainly of those having high weights. The main features of celebrity games are that: computing the best response of a player is NP-hard if ß>1 and polynomial time solvable otherwise; they always have a pure Nash equilibrium; the family of celebrity games having a connected Nash equilibrium is characterized (the so called star celebrity games) and bounds on the diameter of the resulting equilibrium graphs are given; a special case of star celebrity games shares its set of Nash equilibrium profiles with the MaxBD games with uniform bounded distance ß introduced in Bilò et al. [6]. Moreover, we analyze the Price of Anarchy (PoA) and of Stability (PoS) of celebrity games and give several bounds. These are that: for non-star celebrity games PoA=PoS=max{1,W/a}; for star celebrity games PoS=1 and PoA=O(min{n/ß,Wa}) but if the Nash Equilibrium is a tree then the PoA is O(1); finally, when ß=1 the PoA is at most 2. The upper bounds on the PoA are complemented with some lower bounds for ß=2.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Managing such a system presents challenging control problems that, so far, have been approached with classical control techniques. However, large scale systems of interconnected nodes fall within the framework of the emerging field of complex networks. This paper models multi-terminal VSC-HVDC systems as a complex dynamical network, and derives conditions ensuring bounded synchronization of its trajectories for a family of controllers. The obtained results are validated via numerical simulations.Postprint (author's final draft
Analysis of SPME or SBSE extracted volatile compounds from cooked cured pork ham differing in intramuscular fat profiles
We studied the influence of the IMF content (high - HI\ua0vs. low - LI) and the fatty acid saturation profile on cooked cured pork ham volatiles. LI hams had higher PUFA and lower MUFA contents than HI hams. Using SPME we identified 29 compounds novel to cooked cured pork ham profiles, mostly lipid derivatives. Group differences were related to the PUFA/MUFA contents but not to the IMF content. Differences were also identified in amino acid breakdown derivatives with potential aroma implications. The SBSE method, a novelty in pork meat science, revealed differences which included board taint-related volatiles, terpenes and 36 novel compounds; 14 of these compounds were only found by the SBSE method
Sliding modes in a class of complex-valued nonlinear systems

This article extends the theory of sliding modes to a class of nonlinear systems described by complex-valued variables. Hence, states, parameters, control actions, and sliding manifolds belong, in general, to the complex field. In this article, it is also shown that the proposed design in the complex-valued framework provides shorter reaching times to the sliding manifold than the standard sliding-mode design at equal initial condition and control effort. Different implementation approaches are also evaluated, and numerical examples illustrate the proposal.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
