The entrepreneur in the regional innovation system. Acomparative study for high- and low-income regions

This paper investigates the influence of entrepreneurs’characteristics oninnovation in regions with different levels of development. By doing so,this work seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the role ofentrepreneurs in the functioning and performance of regional innovationsystems. The influence of entrepreneurs’personal characteristics andtheir perceptions of the business environment onfirm innovation areinvestigated via a survey of companies carried out in six Spanish regions. The results allow the identifying of significant differences in the maindeterminants of innovation in the high-income regions and low-incomeregions studied. Entrepreneurs’generalized trust stimulates innovationonly in high-income regions, where necessity motivation has also anegative effect on innovation. Growth ambition seems to play a highlypositive role only in the case of low-income regions. Human capital andinfrastructure are perceived by the entrepreneurs as the main bottle-necks for innovation in low-income regions, whereas in the case of high-income regions the legal, fiscal andfinancial systems are considered thekey institutional barriers. These differences in the entrepreneurial factorshould be taken into account in order to design and implement policiesto stimulate and foster innovation in different regional contexts.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO). Percutaneous ultrasound-guided carotid access and puncture closure with angio-seal in horses

Background: There are different indications for endovascular surgery in horses, mainly the treatment of guttural pouch mycosis. Traditionally, these procedures are carried out by open arteriotomy of the common carotid artery (CCA), although less invasive percutaneous ultrasound-guided carotid access (PUGCA) has been described in experimental horses. In human medicine, commercial closure systems are used to seal these arterial puncture sites and reduce complications. The aims of this study are to retrospectively describe our experience with PUGCA in clinical cases and to report, for the first time, the use of the commercial vascular closure device Angio-Seal after PUGCA in horses. Methods: Retrospective study of clinical case records. Collected parameters, including the feasibility of the PUGCA and variables related to the safety and efficacy of the use of the Angio-Seal. Results: Twelve PUGCA procedures in 11 horses were included. In all cases, the artery was effectively accessed, and the planned procedure could be performed. In two cases, haematoma/bleeding due to incorrect use of the Angio-Seal was recorded. This complication rate (16.66%) was lower than that obtained in other studies using PUGCA in horses, but where the puncture was sealed by manual compression only. Main limitations: A control group of clinical cases with PUGCA but without using Angio-Seal is not available. Conclusions: Clinical data confirm previous experimental results, which showed that PUGCA is safe and effective in horses. The Angio-Seal system, regardless of possible complications due to incorrect use, can be used safely and effectively in horses. Further studies comparing arterial access site management using manual compression or Angio-Seal would be necessary to state if its routine use in horses is advisable

Circulating epithelial cell as viral infection and tissue origin marker in patients with severe COVID-19

Liquid biopsy (LB) is a minimally invasive procedure that detects biomarkers in body fluids for real-time monitoring of patients. This study developed a new LB approach to analyze Circulating Epithelial Cells (CECs) in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients with severe COVID-19 and High-Exposure Negative Population to COVID-19 (HENPC) as the control group. The CECs were characterized by multispectral imaging flow cytometry, and an anti-SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 protein (ProtS) antibody was used to detect infection. The results showed that CECs were present in most ICU patients (p = 0.0412), and their median number was significantly higher (p = 0.0004) than in controls. CEC clusters were only identified in patients, and high positive ProtS expression was observed in CECs from ICU patients compared to negative controls. In conclusion, LB could be a minimally invasive tool for detecting tissue damage caused by infectious agents and could provide real-time biological information about disease status and evolution. However, further validation in a larger population of patients is needed

Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation for the Reduction of Oxidative Stress: Clinical Implications in the Treatment of Chronic Diseases

    Get PDF
Apart from its main function in the mitochondria as a key element in electron transport, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been described as having multiple functions, such as oxidant action in the generation of signals and the control of membrane structure and phospholipid and cellular redox status. Among these, the most relevant and most frequently studied function is the potent antioxidant capability of its coexistent redox forms. Different clinical trials have investigated the effect of CoQ10 supplementation and its ability to reduce oxidative stress. In this review, we focused on recent advances in CoQ10 supplementation, its role as an antioxidant, and the clinical implications that this entails in the treatment of chronic diseases, in particular cardiovascular diseases, kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and neurodegenerative diseases. As an antioxidant, CoQ10 has proved to be of potential use as a treatment in diseases in which oxidative stress is a hallmark, and beneficial effects of CoQ10 have been reported in the treatment of chronic diseases. However, it is crucial to reach a consensus on the optimal dose and the use of different formulations, which vary from ubiquinol or ubiquinone Ubisol-Q10 or Qter®, to new analogues such as MitoQ, before we can draw a clear conclusion about its clinical use. In addition, a major effort must be made to demonstrate its beneficial effects in clinical trials, with a view to making the implementation of CoQ10 possible in clinical practice

Impact of heightwidth proportions on the thermal comfort of courtyard typology for Spanish climate zones

Currently, international organizations such as UN admonish countries to adopt measures facing climate change effects. In the Paris Agreement (Nations, 2015) on climate change, global warming was limited up to 2°C. From the last climate change summit, held in Katowice (Poland) on December 3rd, 2018, the rules for a correct implementation of the Paris Agreement for 2020 were detailed. It is in this context of collective will to reduce the climate change effects, where courtyard acquires a singular meaning, especially in warm climates as the Spanish on
