Proposal for soft-x-ray and XUV lasers in capillary discharges

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references (page 567).Capillary plasmas with large length-to-diameter ratios (1/d > 100) are proposed as amplification media for soft-x-ray and XUV radiation by direct discharge excitation. The capillary geometry provides a small volume and an adequate resistance for ohmic heating. Heat conduction to the capillary walls provides rapid cooling of the plasma during the decay of the excitation pulse, resulting in a large recombination rate and a population inversion. A time-dependent collisional-radiative model of the capillary plasma predicts gains of the order of 5 cm-1 in the 18.2-nm line of C VI

We have measured the electric field distribution in the cathode sheath of an electron beam He glow discharge. Laser saturation spectroscopy was used to determine the quadratic Stark shift produced by the electric field. The experimental results are in good agreement with the calculations of a collisional model of the cathode sheath. This research was supported by the National Science Foundation under grant No. PHY-8508594 and the U.S. Air Force. Discharge-driven 46.9-nm amplifier with gain-length approaching saturation

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references.Gain length products up to gl ≈ 14 for the J = 0-1 line of Ne-like Ar at 46.9 nm have been achieved in 15-cm long plasma columns generated by a fast capillary discharge. Amplification in plasma columns up to 20 cm in length was investigated. The laser line intensity is observed to increase exponentially for plasma lengths of up to 15 cm, above which it is observed to saturate. The saturation behavior is discussed. This work was supported in part by the National Science Foundation under grants ECS-9401952 and ECS-9412106, and the U.S. National Research Council

Saturated high-repetition-rate 18.9-nm tabletop laser in nickel-like molybdenum

Includes bibliographical references (page 167).We report saturated operation of an 18.9-nm laser at 5-Hz repetition rate. An amplification with a gain-length product GL of 15.5 is obtained in the 4d 1S0―4p 1P1 laser line of Ni-like Mo in plasmas heated at grazing incidence with ~1-J pulses of 8.1-ps duration from a tabletop laser system. Lasing is obtained over a broad range of time delays and pumping conditions. We also measure a GL of 13.5 in the 22.6-nm transition of the same ion. The results are of interest for numerous applications requiring high-repetition-rate lasers at wavelengths below 20 nm

    Two-dimensional near-field and far-field imaging of a Ne-like Ar capillary discharge table-top soft-x-ray laser

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references (page 1514).We have performed systematic measurements and numerical modeling of the divergence and exit beam size of a 46.9 nm Ne-like Ar capillary discharge pumped soft-x-ray amplifier. Two-dimensional near-field and far-field measurements were obtained over a wide range of discharge parameters. The spot size and divergence of the laser beam were observed to increase significantly with decreasing discharge pressure. Simultaneously, the beam intensity distribution changed from a single peak pattern to an annular profile. These effects are shown to be the result of increased refraction of the soft-x-ray beam, caused by larger density gradients in the plasma columns of the lower pressure discharges. The spatial images are nearly cylindrically symmetric, and have less structure than those reported in the literature for laser-driven soft-x-ray lasers. Beam profiles synthesized by model calculations are found to be in good agreement with the recorded images. The obtained images in combination with the model computations clarify the origin of the different beam patterns that are observed in capillary discharge soft-x-ray laser experiments

Includes bibliographical references (page 2097).Images with a spatial resolution of 120-150 nm were obtained with 46.9 nm light from a compact capillary-discharge laser by use of the combination of a Sc-Si multilayer-coated Schwarzschild condenser and a freestanding imaging zone plate. The results are relevant to the development of compact extreme-ultraviolet laser-based imaging tools for nanoscience and nanotechnology

Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis
