    Improving Term Frequency Normalization for Multi-topical Documents, and Application to Language Modeling Approaches

    Term frequency normalization is a serious issue since lengths of documents are various. Generally, documents become long due to two different reasons - verbosity and multi-topicality. First, verbosity means that the same topic is repeatedly mentioned by terms related to the topic, so that term frequency is more increased than the well-summarized one. Second, multi-topicality indicates that a document has a broad discussion of multi-topics, rather than single topic. Although these document characteristics should be differently handled, all previous methods of term frequency normalization have ignored these differences and have used a simplified length-driven approach which decreases the term frequency by only the length of a document, causing an unreasonable penalization. To attack this problem, we propose a novel TF normalization method which is a type of partially-axiomatic approach. We first formulate two formal constraints that the retrieval model should satisfy for documents having verbose and multi-topicality characteristic, respectively. Then, we modify language modeling approaches to better satisfy these two constraints, and derive novel smoothing methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method increases significantly the precision for keyword queries, and substantially improves MAP (Mean Average Precision) for verbose queries.Comment: 8 pages, conference paper, published in ECIR '0

    Naphthalimide Trifluoroacetyl Acetonate: A Hydrazine-Selective Chemodosimetric Sensor

    The trifluoroacetyl acetonate naphthalimide derivative 1 has been synthesized in good yield. In acetonitrile solution, compound 1 reacts selectively with hydrazine (NH2NH2) to give a five-membered ring. This leads to OFF-ON fluorescence with a maximum intensity at 501 nm as well as easily discernible color changes. Based on a readily discernible and reproducible 3.9% change in overall fluorescence intensity, the limit of detection for 1 is 3.2 ppb (0.1 mu M), which is below the accepted limit for hydrazine set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Compound 1 is selective for hydrazine over other amines, including NH4OH, NH2OH, ethylenediamine, methylamine, n-butylamine, piperazine, dimethylamine, triethylamine, pyridine, and is not perturbed by environmentally abundant metal ions. When supported on glass-backed silica gel TLC plates, compound 1 acts as a fluorimetric and colorimetric probe for hydrazine vapor at a partial pressure of 9.0 mm Hg, with selectivity over other potentially interfering volatile analytes, including ammonia, methylamine, n-butylamine, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, H2O2, HCl, and CO2 being observed.     Probabilistic safety assessment-based importance analysis of cyber-attacks on nuclear power plants

    With the application of digital technology to safety-critical infrastructures, cyber-attacks have emerged as one of the new dangerous threats. In safety-critical infrastructures such as a nuclear power plant (NPP), a cyber-attack could have serious consequences by initiating dangerous events or rendering important safety systems unavailable. Since a cyber-attack is conducted intentionally, numerous possible cases should be considered for developing a cyber security system, such as the attack paths, methods, and potential target systems. Therefore, prior to developing a risk-informed cyber security strategy, the importance of cyber-attacks and significant critical digital assets (CDAs) should be analyzed. In this work, an importance analysis method for cyber-attacks on an NPP was proposed using the probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) method. To develop an importance analysis framework for cyber-attacks, possible cyber-attacks were identified with failure modes, and a PSA model for cyber-attacks was developed. For case studies, the quantitative evaluations of cyber-attack scenarios were performed using the proposed method. By using quantitative importance of cyber-attacks and identifying significant CDAs that must be defended against cyber-attacks, it is possible to develop an efficient and reliable defense strategy against cyber-attacks on NPPs

    AbstractLet H be a torsion-free strongly polycyclic (torsion-free virtually polycyclic, resp.) group. Let G be any group with maximal condition. We show that there exists a torsion-free strongly polycyclic (torsion-free virtually polycyclic, resp.) group G˜ and an epimorphism ε:G→G˜ such that for any homomorphism ϕ:G→H, it factors through G˜, i.e., there exists a homomorphism ϕ˜:G˜→H such that ϕ=ϕ˜∘ε. We show that this factorization property cannot be extended to any finitely generated group G. As an application of factorization, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for N(f,g)=R(f,g) to hold for maps f,g:X→Y between closed orientable n-manifolds where π1(X) has the maximal condition, Y is an infra-solvmanifold, N(f,g) and R(f,g) denote the Nielsen and Reidemeister coincidence numbers, respectively

    Service-Learning in Language for Specific Purposes: A Case of Korean Language Practicum

    While service-learning has been greatly acknowledged as an effective instructional tool in education for the past two decades, it has not been extensively applied to the Korean classroom and Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) settings as of yet. The practical challenges of community-involved service-learning for the less commonly taught language (LCTL) programs such as Korean are discussed. Moreover, community engagement through the campus community combined with the language teaching practicum is suggested for service-learning as an alternative to address the challenges. This study explores the curriculum design of a service-learning for a small language group and offers practical ideas on how to expose the students to campus communities, thereby providing them with cross-cultural insights and language practicum competence that extend beyond classroom language learning. The outcome supports that the campus community engagement effectively provides a hands-on opportunity for the students to practice not only their academics but also their leadership skills through the experience of designing their own service details in collaboration with their campus community partners

    Dependence of quantum-Hall conductance on the edge-state equilibration position in a bipolar graphene sheet

    By using four-terminal configurations, we investigated the dependence of longitudinal and diagonal resistances of a graphene p-n interface on the quantum-Hall edge-state equilibration position. The resistance of a p-n device in our four-terminal scheme is asymmetric with respect to the zero point where the filling factor (ν\nu) of the entire graphene vanishes. This resistance asymmetry is caused by the chiral-direction-dependent change of the equilibration position and leads to a deeper insight into the equilibration process of the quantum-Hall edge states in a bipolar graphene system.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, will be published in PR

    Detection of an Ala601Thr mutation of plasminogen gene in 3 out of 36 Korean patients with deep vein thrombosis.

    Plasminogen is a key proenzyme in the fibrinolytic and thrombolytic systems. Congenital deficiency of plasminogen and molecular abnormality of plasminogen (dysplasminogenemia) have been reported in association with the thrombotic tendency in human. In dysplasminogenemia, the level of immunoreactive plasminogen is normal, although the functional activity is reduced. Human plasminogen gene spans about 52.5 kb of DNA and consists of 19 exons. Three types of mutations (Ala601Thr, Val355Phe, and Asp676Asn) have been described in dysplasminogenemia. In this study, we measured the plasminogen activity in patients with deep vein thrombosis and analyzed the DNA sequence to detect three point mutations (Ala601Thr, Val355Phe and Asp676Asn) in patients with hypo/dysplasminogenemia. Dysplasminogenemia was identified in 3 (8.3%) of unrelated 36 patients with deep vein thrombosis and the Ala601Thr mutation was detected in all three patients with dysplasminogenemia. In conclusion, dysplasminogenemia is not rare in deep vein thrombosis, which suggests a risk factor for the thrombosis in Korean population
