Determinants of fasting and post-methionine homocysteine levels in families predisposed to hyperhomocysteinemia and premature vascular disease
Contributing Determinants to Hearing Loss in Elderly Men and Women: Results from the Population-Based Rotterdam Study
To contribute to a better understanding of the etiology in age-related hearing loss, we carried out a cross-sectional study of 3,315 participants (aged 52-99 years) in the Rotterdam Study, to analyze both low- and high-frequency hearing loss in men and women. Hearing thresholds with pure-tone audiometry were obtained, and other detailed information on a large number of possible determinants was collected. Hearing loss was associated with age, education, systolic blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, body mass index, smoking and alcohol consumption (inverse correlation). Remarkably, different associations were found for low- and high-frequency loss, as well as between men and women, suggesting that different mechanisms are involved in the etiology of age-related hearing loss

The citation has now been inserted in Materials and Methods, subsection Brain MRI Acquisition and Processing, second paragraph and should read: Voxel based morphometry (VBM) was performed according to an optimized VBM protocol (Good et al., 2001) and was previously described (Roshchupkin et al., 2016). FSL software (Smith et al., 2004) was used for VBM data processing, all GM and WM density maps were non-linearly registered to the standard ICBM MNI152 GM and WM template (Montreal Neurological Institute) with a 1 mm Ă— 1 mm Ă— 1 mm voxel resolution. Subsequently, a spatial modulation and smoothing procedure with 3 mm (FWHM 8 mm) isotropic Gaussian kernel were applied to all images. The authors apologize for this error and state that this does not change the scientific conclusions of the article in any way. Progression of Hearing Loss in the Aging Population: Repeated Auditory Measurements in the Rotterdam Study
We quantified changes in the auditory acuity of 675 aging adults (mean age 71.1 years, 52.0% female, mean follow-up 4.4 years ± 0.2) of an ongoing cohort study with a pure-tone audiogram and a speech-in-noise test. Generalized estimating equation models were used to study the association between hearing loss and the progression with age, sex, education, cognition, BMI, blood pressure, having type 2 diabetes mellitus, cholesterol ratio, smoking and alcohol consumption. The mean progression of hearing loss was 0.29 and 1.35 dB/year (low and high frequencies). Progression of hearing loss was associated with baseline hearing thresholds. Besides, the presence of type 2 diabetes, smoking, age, sex and time were associated with worse hearing at baseline, but there was no statistical evidence that the tested determinants were associated with progression of hearing loss. This finding indicates that the 4-year progression of hearing loss in older adults in this study is not influenced by the measured determinants. More research with multiple follow-up rounds is desired

Long-term effects of folic acid and vitamin-B12 supplementation on fracture risk and cardiovascular disease: extended follow-up of the B-PROOF trial
Background & aims: In the initial B-proof, we found inconsistent results of B vitamin supplementation. However, the debate regarding the effects of B vitamins on age-related diseases continues. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the long-term effects (5-7 years follow-up) of an intervention with folic acid and vitamin-B12 supplementation on fracture and cardiovascular disease risk.Methods: Extended follow-up of the B-PROOF trial, a multi-center, double-blind randomized placebo controlled trial designed to assess the effect of 2-3 years daily supplementation with folic acid (400 mg) and vitamin-B12 (500 mg) versus placebo (n = 2,919). Primary outcome was verified self reported fracture incidence and secondary outcomes were self-reported cardiovascular endpoints, which were collected through a follow-up questionnaires Proportional hazard analyses was used for the effect of the intervention on risk of fracture(s) and logistic regression for the effect of the intervention on risk of cardiovascular disease.Results: A total of 1,298 individuals (4 4.5%) participated in the second follow-up round with median of 54 months [51-58], (n = 662 and n = 636, treatment versus placebo group). Median age at baseline was 71.0 years [68.0-76.0] for both groups. No effect was observed of the intervention on osteoporotic fracture or any fracture risk after a follow-up (HR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.62-1.59 and HR: 0.77; 95% CI: 0.50-1.19, respectively), nor on cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease risk (OR: 1.05; 95%CI: 0.80-1.44 and OR: 0.85; 95%CI: 0.50-1.45, respectively). Potential interaction by baseline homocysteine concentration was observed for osteoporotic-and any fracture (p = 0.10 and 0.06 respectively), which indicated a significantly lower risk of any fracture in the treatment group with higher total homocysteine concentrations (>15.1 mmol/l). No age-dependent effects were present.Conclusions: This study supports and extends previous null -findings of the B-PROOF trial and shows that supplementation of folic acid and vitamin-B12 has no effect on fracture risk, nor on cardiovascular disease in older individuals over a longer follow-up period. However, B-vitamin supplementation may be beneficial in reducing fractures in individuals with high total homocysteine concentrations, a finding which needs to be replicated. Realistic Model of the Nucleon Spectral Function in Few- and Many- Nucleon Systems
By analysing the high momentum features of the nucleon momentum distribution
in light and complex nuclei, it is argued that the basic two-nucleon
configurations generating the structure of the nucleon Spectral Function at
high values of the nucleon momentum and removal energy, can be properly
described by a factorised ansatz for the nuclear wave function, which leads to
a nucleon Spectral Function in the form of a convolution integral involving the
momentum distributions describing the relative and center-of-mass motion of a
correlated nucleon-nucleon pair embedded in the medium. The Spectral Functions
of and infinite nuclear matter resulting from the convolution formula
and from many-body calculations are compared, and a very good agreement in a
wide range of values of nucleon momentum and removal energy is found.
Applications of the model to the analysis of inclusive and exclusive processes
are presented, illustrating those features of the cross section which are
sensitive to that part of the Spectral Function which is governed by

Neutron structure function and inclusive DIS from H-3 and He-3 at large Bjorken-x
A detailed study of inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from mirror A =
3 nuclei at large values of the Bjorken variable x is presented. The main
purpose is to estimate the theoretical uncertainties on the extraction of the
neutron DIS structure function from such nuclear measurements. On one hand,
within models in which no modification of the bound nucleon structure functions
is taken into account, we have investigated the possible uncertainties arising
from: i) charge symmetry breaking terms in the nucleon-nucleon interaction, ii)
finite Q**2 effects neglected in the Bjorken limit, iii) the role of different
prescriptions for the nucleon Spectral Function normalization providing baryon
number conservation, and iv) the differences between the virtual nucleon and
light cone formalisms. Although these effects have been not yet considered in
existing analyses, our conclusion is that all these effects cancel at the level
of ~ 1% for x < 0.75 in overall agreement with previous findings. On the other
hand we have considered several models in which the modification of the bound
nucleon structure functions is accounted for to describe the EMC effect in DIS
scattering from nuclei. It turns out that within these models the cancellation
of nuclear effects is expected to occur only at a level of ~ 3%, leading to an
accuracy of ~ 12 % in the extraction of the neutron to proton structure
function ratio at x ~ 0.7 -0.8$. Another consequence of considering a broad
range of models of the EMC effect is that the previously suggested iteration
procedure does not improve the accuracy of the extraction of the neutron to
