Universal aspects of vacancy-mediated disordering dynamics: the effect of external fields
We investigate the disordering of an initially phase-segregated binary alloy,
due to a highly mobile defect which couples to an electric or gravitational
field. Using both mean-field and Monte Carlo methods, we show that the late
stages of this process exhibit dynamic scaling, characterized by a set of
exponents and scaling functions. A new scaling variable emerges, associated
with the field. While the scaling functions carry information about the field
and the boundary conditions, the exponents are universal. They can be computed
analytically, in excellent agreement with simulation results.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
Precision Measurement of PArity Violation in Polarized Cold Neutron Capture on the Proton: the NPDGamma Experiment
The NPDGamma experiment at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) is
dedicated to measure with high precision the parity violating asymmetry in the
emission after capture of spin polarized cold neutrons in
para-hydrogen. The measurement will determine unambiguously the weak
pion-nucleon-nucleon () coupling constant {\it f}Comment: Proceedings of the PANIC'05 Conference, Santa Fe, NM, USA, October

A Fermi Surface study of BaKBiO
We present all electron computations of the 3D Fermi surfaces (FS's) in
BaKBiO for a number of different compositions based on the
selfconsistent Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent-potential-approximation
(KKR-CPA) approach for incorporating the effects of Ba/K substitution. By
assuming a simple cubic structure throughout the composition range, the
evolution of the nesting and other features of the FS of the underlying
pristine phase is correlated with the onset of various structural transitions
with K doping. A parameterized scheme for obtaining an accurate 3D map of the
FS in BaKBiO for an arbitrary doping level is developed. We
remark on the puzzling differences between the phase diagrams of
BaKBiO and BaPbBiO by comparing aspects
of their electronic structures and those of the end compounds BaBiO,
KBiO and BaPbO. Our theoretically predicted FS's in the cubic phase are
relevant for analyzing high-resolution Compton scattering and
positron-annihilation experiments sensitive to the electron momentum density,
and are thus amenable to substantial experimental verification.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Temporal trends in validated ischaemic stroke hospitalizations in the USA
Background: Accurate assessment of the burden of stroke, a major cause of disability and death, is crucial. We aimed to estimate rates of validated ischaemic stroke hospitalizations in the USA during 1998-2011. Methods: We used the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study cohort's adjudicated stroke data for participants aged ≥55 years, to construct validation models for each International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-code group and patient covariates. These models were applied to the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) data to estimate the probability of validated ischaemic stroke for each eligible hospitalization. Rates and trends in NIS using ICD codes vs estimates of validated ischaemic stroke were compared. Results: After applying validation models, the estimated annual average rate of validated ischaemic stroke hospitalizations in the USA during 1998-2011 was 3.37 [95% confidence interval (CI): 3.31, 3.43) per 1000 person-years. Validated rates declined during 1998-2011 from 4.7/1000 to 2.9/1000; however, the decline was limited to 1998-2007, with no further decline subsequently through 2011. Validation models showed that the false-positive (∼23% of strokes) and false-negative rates of ICD-9-CM codes in primary position for ischaemic stroke approximately cancel. Therefore, estimates of ischaemic stroke hospitalizations did not substantially change after applying validation models. Conclusions: Overall, ischaemic stroke hospitalization rates in the USA have declined during 1998-2007, but no further decline was observed from 2007 to 2011. Validated ischaemic stroke hospitalizations estimates were similar to published estimates of hospitalizations with ischaemic stroke ICD codes in primary position. Validation of national discharge data using prospective chart review data is important to estimate the accuracy of reported burden of stroke
Emergency department utilization after hospitalization discharge for acute stroke: The COMprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) study
Each year nearly 800,000 people in the United States experience a stroke. Those that survive are at high risk for complications after hospital discharge. Providing appropriate care during the recovery from this complex condition is a challenge for patients, caregivers, and health care providers. Understanding emergency department (ED) utilization after a stroke may provide insights into long-term management of stroke, inform interventions, improve patient outcomes, and reduce medical costs. A comprehensive transitional care model for post-acute stroke care may influence the need to seek ED care for downstream events after a stroke. To date, most transitional care trials exploring post-stroke healthcare utilization were conducted outside of the U.S. health-care system. We examined data from the Comprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) study, a cluster-randomized pragmatic trial of a post-discharge transitional care model for stroke survivors and their caregivers compared with usual care
