A new 2-D model of a thin annular disk using a modified assumption
The work describes an improved 2-D model for a thin annulus by using a modified assumption with regard to coupled vibration. With this approach, the impedance spectrum and displacements due to radial modes, both in radial and thickness direction of a thin ring, are obtained. Bending displacement is investigated by finite element analysis (FEA) and matches our model. The bending in the thickness direction is coupled to radial modes and shows several node circles in the high radial overtone frequency range. The model is validated by FEA with excellent agreement between the new theory and FEA result
Plural policing in Europe:relationships and governance in contemporary security system
References to ‘plural policing’, ‘policing beyond the police’ and the ‘extended policing family’ are now commonplace in many discussions of policing in late modern societies. There is a danger that claims about the dynamic and changing nature of plural policing themselves become a new orthodoxy and begin to lose a sense of local nuance and recognition of the importance of place-based specificity and context in understanding the particularities of policing. It is this need to unpack the complex ways in which contemporary plural policing is now configured at a local level within different national political environments that provides the underpinning rationale for this Special Issue. Focussing on aspects of relationships and governance in six jurisdictions across northern and western Europe, it provides important insights into how the policies, practices and narratives around plural policing reflect the influence of particular histories and geographies. The first three articles are focused primarily on the relationships which have emerged in the public sector through its own processes of pluralisation, in particular, through the introduction of policing auxiliaries or municipal policing in Scotland, England and The Netherlands. The fourth article considers both relationships and governance in pluralised policing in Paris, France. A detailed analysis of the governance of safety and security is taken up in the final two articles, examining the cases of Austria and Belgium. These articles clearly demonstrate that experiences of pluralised policing vary widely within Europe and call into question the assumed dominance of neo-liberal forces in this area
A World-Volume Perspective on the Recombination of Intersecting Branes
We study brane recombination for supersymmetric configurations of
intersecting branes in terms of the world-volume field theory. This field
theory contains an impurity, corresponding to the degrees of freedom localized
at the intersection. The Higgs branch, on which the impurity fields condense,
consists of vacua for which the intersection is deformed into a smooth
calibrated manifold. We show this explicitly using a superspace formalism for
which the calibration equations arise naturally from F- and D-flatness.Comment: References adde
Force-Extension Relations for Polymers with Sliding Links
Topological entanglements in polymers are mimicked by sliding rings
(slip-links) which enforce pair contacts between monomers. We study the
force-extension curve for linear polymers in which slip-links create additional
loops of variable size. For a single loop in a phantom chain, we obtain exact
expressions for the average end-to-end separation: The linear response to a
small force is related to the properties of the unstressed chain, while for a
large force the polymer backbone can be treated as a sequence of Pincus--de
Gennes blobs, the constraint effecting only a single blob. Generalizing this

Evolution of active and polar photospheric magnetic fields during the rise of Cycle 24 compared to previous cycles
The evolution of the photospheric magnetic field during the declining phase
and minimum of Cycle 23 and the recent rise of Cycle 24 are compared with the
behavior during previous cycles. We used longitudinal full-disk magnetograms
from the NSO's three magnetographs at Kitt Peak, the Synoptic Optical Long-term
Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) Vector Spectro-Magnetograph (VSM), the
Spectromagnetograph and the 512-Channel Magnetograph instruments, and
longitudinal full-disk magnetograms from the Mt. Wilson 150-foot tower. We
analyzed 37 years of observations from these two observatories that have been
observing daily, weather permitting, since 1974, offering an opportunity to
study the evolving relationship between the active region and polar fields in
some detail over several solar cycles. It is found that the annual averages of
a proxy for the active region poloidal magnetic field strength, the magnetic
field strength of the high-latitude poleward streams, and the time derivative
of the polar field strength are all well correlated in each hemisphere. These
results are based on statistically significant cyclical patterns in the active
region fields and are consistent with the Babcock-Leighton phenomenological
model for the solar activity cycle. There was more hemispheric asymmetry in the
activity level, as measured by total and maximum active region flux, during
late Cycle 23 (after around 2004), when the southern hemisphere was more
active, and Cycle 24 up to the present, when the northern hemisphere has been
more active, than at any other time since 1974. The active region net proxy
poloidal fields effectively disappeared in both hemispheres around 2004, and
the polar fields did not become significantly stronger after this time. We see
evidence that the process of Cycle 24 field reversal has begun at both poles.Comment: Accepted for publication in Solar Physic
Non-Abelian (p,q) Strings in the Warped Deformed Conifold
We calculate the tension of -strings in the warped deformed conifold
using the non-Abelian DBI action. In the large flux limit, we find exact
agreement with the recent expression obtained by Firouzjahi, Leblond and
Henry-Tye up to and including order terms if is also taken to be
large. Furthermore using the finite prescription for the symmetrised trace
operation we anticipate the most general expression for the tension valid for
any . We find that even in this instance, corrections to the tension

Differential cross sections, charge production asymmetry, and spin-density matrix elements for D*(2010) produced in 500 GeV/c pi^- nucleon interactions
We report differential cross sections for the production of D*(2010) produced
in 500 GeV/c pi^- nucleon interactions from experiment E791 at Fermilab, as
functions of Feynman-x (x_F) and transverse momentum squared (p_T^2). We also
report the D* +/- charge asymmetry and spin-density matrix elements as
functions of these variables. Investigation of the spin-density matrix elements
shows no evidence of polarization. The average values of the spin alignment are
\eta= 0.01 +- 0.02 and -0.01 +- 0.02 for leading and non-leading particles,

Optical application and measurement of torque on microparticles of isotropic nonabsorbing material
We show how it is possible to controllably rotate or align microscopic
particles of isotropic nonabsorbing material in a TEM00 Gaussian beam trap,
with simultaneous measurement of the applied torque using purely optical means.
This is a simple and general method of rotation, requiring only that the
particle is elongated along one direction. Thus, this method can be used to
rotate or align a wide range of naturally occurring particles. The ability to
measure the applied torque enables the use of this method as a quantitative
tool--the rotational equivalent of optical tweezers based force measurement. As
well as being of particular value for the rotation of biological specimens,
this method is also suitable for the development of optically-driven

Effective theory of the Delta(1232) in Compton scattering off the nucleon
We formulate a new power-counting scheme for a chiral effective field theory
of nucleons, pions, and Deltas. This extends chiral perturbation theory into
the Delta-resonance region. We calculate nucleon Compton scattering up to
next-to-leading order in this theory. The resultant description of existing
p cross section data is very good for photon energies up to about 300
MeV. We also find reasonable numbers for the spin-independent polarizabilities

Multi-layered Ruthenium-modified Bond Coats for Thermal Barrier Coatings
Diffusional approaches for fabrication of multi-layered Ru-modified bond coats for thermal
barrier coatings have been developed via low activity chemical vapor deposition and high activity
pack aluminization. Both processes yield bond coats comprising two distinct B2 layers, based on
NiAl and RuAl, however, the position of these layers relative to the bond coat surface is reversed
when switching processes. The structural evolution of each coating at various stages of the
fabrication process has been and subsequent cyclic oxidation is presented, and the relevant
interdiffusion and phase equilibria issues in are discussed. Evaluation of the oxidation behavior of
these Ru-modified bond coat structures reveals that each B2 interlayer arrangement leads to the
formation of α-Al 2 O 3 TGO at 1100°C, but the durability of the TGO is somewhat different and in
need of further improvement in both cases
