Thin spray film thickness measuring technique
Thin spray film application depths, in the 0.0002 cm to 0.002 cm range, are measured by portable, commercially available, light density measuring device used in conjunction with glass plate or photographic film. Method is automated by using mechanical/electrical control for shutting off film applicator at desired densitometer reading

Fracture behavior of unidirectional boron/aluminum composite laminates
An experiment was conducted to verify the results of mathematical models which predict the stresses and displacements of fibers and the amount of damage growth in a center-notched lamina as a function of the applied remote stress and the matrix and fiber material properties. A brittle lacquer coating was used to detect the yielding in the matrix while X-ray techniques were used to determine the number of broken fibers in the laminate. The notched strengths and the amounts of damage found in the specimens agree well with those predicted by the mathematical model. It is shown that the amount of damage and the crack opening displacement does not depend strongly on the number of plies in the laminate for a given notch width. By heat-treating certain laminates to increase the yield stress of the alumina matrix, the effect of different matrix properties on the fracture behavior was investigated. The stronger matrix is shown to weaken the notched laminate by decreasing the amount of matrix damage, thereby making the laminate more notch sensitive

Implications of an r-mode in XTE J1751-305: Mass, radius and spin evolution
Recently Strohmayer and Mahmoodifar presented evidence for a coherent
oscillation in the X-ray light curve of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE
J1751-305, using data taken by RXTE during the 2002 outburst of this source.
They noted that a possible explanation includes the excitation of a non-radial
oscillation mode of the neutron star, either in the form of a g-mode or an
r-mode. The r-mode interpretation has connections with proposed spin-evolution
scenarios for systems such as XTE J1751-305. Here we examine in detail this
interesting possible interpretation. Using the ratio of the observed
oscillation frequency to the star's spin frequency, we derive an approximate
neutron star mass-radius relation which yields reasonable values for the mass
over the range of expected stellar radius (as constrained by observations of
radius-expansion burst sources). However, we argue that the large mode
amplitude suggested by the Strohmayer and Mahmoodifar analysis would inevitably
lead to a large spin-down of the star, inconsistent with its observed spin
evolution, regardless of whether the r-mode itself is in a stable or unstable
regime. We therefore conclude that the r-mode interpretation of the observed
oscillation is not consistent with our current understanding of neutron star
dynamics and must be considered unlikely. Finally we note that, subject to the
availability of a sufficiently accurate timing model, a direct
gravitational-wave search may be able to confirm or reject an r-mode
interpretation unambiguously, should such an event, with a similar inferred
mode amplitude, recur during the Advanced detector era.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; submitted to MNRA
Axisymmetric buckling of a spherical shell embedded in an elastic medium under uniaxial stress at infinity
The problem of a thin spherical linearly-elastic shell, perfectly bonded to an infinite linearly-elastic medium is considered. A constant axisymmetric stress field is applied at infinity in the matrix, and the displacement and stress fields in the shell and matrix are evaluated by means of harmonic potential functions. In order to examine the stability of this solution, the buckling problem of a shell which experiences this deformation is considered. Using Koiter's nonlinear shallow shell theory, restricting buckling patterns to those which are axisymmetric, and using the Rayleigh–Ritz method by expanding the buckling patterns in an infinite series of Legendre functions, an eigenvalue problem for the coefficients in the infinite series is determined. This system is truncated and solved numerically in order to analyse the behaviour of the shell as it undergoes buckling, and to identify the critical buckling stress in two cases — namely where the shell is hollow and the stress at infinity is either uniaxial or radial
