    Association between high school students’ cigarette smoking, asthma and related beliefs: a population-based study

    Background Smoking has a detrimental effect on the symptoms and severity of asthma, a common chronic disease among adolescents. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between asthma and smoking among high school students and assess provider-patient communication with asthmatic adolescents regarding smoking and adolescents’ beliefs about the harms of smoking. Methods In fall 2014, data from high school students, ages 14–18 years, completing the 2009-2010 Virginia Youth Tobacco Survey (N = 1796) were used in descriptive analyses and multivariable logistic regression models adjusting for model-specific confounders as appropriate. Results Overall, an estimated 19 % of high school students in Virginia smoked and 16 % had asthma. Odds of smoking did not differ by asthma status; however, asthmatics had 1.5 times higher odds of being asked if they smoke (95 % CI 1.06–2.13) and being advised not to smoke by a health professional (95 % CI 1.10–2.14) compared to non-asthmatics. Asthmatics who believed second-hand smoke or smoking 1–5 cigarettes/day was not harmful had respectively 4.2 and 2.8 times higher odds of smoking than those who thought each was harmful. Further, asthmatics who thought smoking 1−2 years is safe had 3.4 times higher odds of smoking than those who did not (95 % CI 1.57–10.1). Conclusions While asthmatic adolescents are just as likely to smoke as non-asthmatics, less healthy beliefs about the risks of smoking increase the odds of smoking among asthmatics. Thus, targeted asthma-specific smoking prevention and education to change attitudes and beliefs could be an effective tool for adolescents

    PLACING THE EVOLUTIONARY HISTORY OF \u3ci\u3eDESMOGNATHUS\u3c/i\u3e SALAMANDERS IN CONTEXT: A PHYLOGEOGRAPHIC APPROACH

    Patterns of genetic variation do not arise in a vacuum but are instead shaped by the interplay between evolutionary forces and ecological constraints. Here, I use a phylogeographic approach to examine the role that ecology played in lineage divergence in the Desmognathus quadramaculatus species complex (Family: Plethodontidae), which consists of three nominal species: D. quadramaculatus, D. marmoratus, and D. folkertsi. Previous phylogenetic studies have shown that individuals from these species do not form clades based on phenotype. My approach to reconciling phylogenetic discordance was two-fold, using (1) genome-wide markers to provide insight into the relationships among lineages and (2) geographic and climate data to provide context for patterns of genetic diversity. First, I obtained genome-wide nuclear markers using double-digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD) to examine whether two morphologically divergent species, D. marmoratus and D. quadramaculatus, represent independently evolving lineages. Phylogenetic, population structure, and model testing analyses all confirmed that D. marmoratus and D. quadramaculatus do not group based on phenotype. Instead, I found that there were two cryptic genetic lineages (Nantahala and Pisgah) that each contained both phenotypes. Additionally, ecological niche modeling showed that the two genetic lineages primarily occupy geographic areas with significantly different climates, suggesting that climate may have played a role in divergence. Next, I assembled loci from publicly available sequencing data using a draft transcriptome of Desmognathus fuscus as a reference to assess the three nominal species in the quadramaculatus species complex across their entire range. I used phylogenetic and population structure analyses, alongside haplowebs and conspecificity matrices, to determine if the loci supported the hypothesis that the phenotypes represent multiple independently evolving lineages within the broader genetic clades found in the previous chapter. I found that the loci were not informative enough to determine whether the phenotypes had a genetic basis in Pisgah, but did support genetic divergence between phenotypes in Nantahala. Finally, I used ecological niche models (ENMs) and resistance modeling to place the genetic results and phenotypic diversity within the context of time and space. I found that though the quadramaculatus and marmoratus phenotypes were nearly indistinguishable in niche space in the present day, they were projected to occupy different geographic areas in the past and future. The southern portion of the study area had areas of high habitat suitability from the Last Glacial Maximum (~22 kya) to the present, which aligns with the higher genetic divergence between groups in Nantahala. Anthropogenic land use changes reduced habitat availability but likely did not drive genetic divergence in the past, and may be of more consequence to genetic diversity than climate change over the next 50 years. Like many taxa that underwent adaptive radiations, the evolutionary history of Desmognathus has been obfuscated by high rates of within-species phenotypic diversity and shared morphology between distantly related lineages. My findings emphasize the importance of interrogating complex patterns of genetic variation within the context of the dynamic, heterogeneous landscapes in which they arise

    Increasing Engagement in the HDPE Recycling Value Chain in the United States

    Global production of plastics has increased dramatically in the past 70 years, from 1.9 million tons in 1950 up to 330 million tons in 2013. The United States, the world’s second largest producer of waste, generated 32 million tons of post-consumer plastic waste in 2012, and only 8.8 percent of it was recovered. The rest was discarded in landfills and in smaller portions along roads, beaches, and in waterways. The value of just one type of plastic packaging—high density polyethylene (HDPE)—wasted in the United States is estimated to be $2.85 billion (2010). Despite generally high demand for recycled HDPE content (e.g., from consumer packaged goods manufacturers), there are disconnects between many recyclers, product manufacturers, and other actors that result in suboptimal design for recyclability and insufficient supply of quality material for recycling. Guided by this dynamic, the research has two objectives: (1) identify opportunities to increase engagement in the value chain for recycling rigid HDPE and (2) serve as a reference guide on the value chain covering key market dynamics, challenges, and influential organizations in each segment

As educators we must be willing to see where change needs to be made and accept the fact that we as individuals may need to change in order to provide the best education that the students deserve. Change is not an easy thing to accept or accomplish. It is more comfortable to sit in the same old place and not look outside our blinders. However we must realize that this does not help students or their parents. Not only does it not help these people it does not help us become better educators

    University rankings called to account – library voices in the conversation

    The past few years have seen increasingly raised voices against the impact of University Rankings, such as QS, THE World University Rankings, ARWU and USNews. Research administrators have been particularly vocal about the influence of ranking systems on university behaviors and called for more responsible metrics and profiling tools that demonstrate distinctiveness. This paper seeks to understand the role of the library in these conversations, particularly in light of recent strengthening of bibliometrics and scholarly communication initiatives that deal with source data for publication and citation elements of the rankings, and increased relationship-building with Research Offices and Institutional Policy and Planning Offices. Librarians and library leaders seeking a round up of recent developments in the rethinking of University Rankings will find this session useful for commentary and insights to share with their own institutions

    The challenges of EMI for art and design students in the UAE

    While there are a variety of reasons for implementing English medium instruction (EMI) at higher-education institutions (HEIs) worldwide, this decision is often made without consideration of its potential impact on student learning. Federal HEIs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are no exception. With English language admission standards at between 5.0 and 5.5 IELTS, students are frequently challenged to successfully complete the tasks required of them and faculty can be frustrated by the level of work they receive. This article describes the findings of a research project, conducted with Emirati art and design students at one of these HEIs, which identified challenges experienced by students and faculty in an EMI setting. A subsequent initiative investigating writing genres students need to be familiar with is also discussed. Finally, collaboratively developed teaching materials are also described. With appropriate contextual modifications, these initiatives could be replicated in EMI contexts elsewhere

    Household ownership and use of insecticide treated nets among target groups after implementation of a national voucher programme in the United Republic of Tanzania: plausibility study using three annual cross sectional household surveys.

    OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of the Tanzania National Voucher Scheme on the coverage and equitable distribution of insecticide treated nets, used to prevent malaria, to pregnant women and their infants. DESIGN: Plausibility study using three nationally representative cross sectional household and health facility surveys, timed to take place early, mid-way, and at the end of the roll out of the national programme. SETTING: The Tanzania National Voucher Scheme was implemented in antenatal services, and phased in on a district by district basis from October 2004 covering all of mainland Tanzania in May 2006. PARTICIPANTS: 6115, 6260, and 6198 households (in 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively) in a representative sample of 21 districts (out of a total of 113). INTERVENTIONS: A voucher worth $2.45 ( pound1.47, euro1.74) to be used as part payment for the purchase of a net from a local shop was given to every pregnant woman attending antenatal services. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Insecticide treated net coverage was measured as household ownership of at least one net and use of a net the night before the survey. Socioeconomic distribution of nets was examined using an asset based index. RESULTS: Steady increases in net coverage indicators were observed over the three year study period. Between 2005 and 2007, household ownership of at least one net (untreated or insecticide treated) increased from 44% (2686/6115) to 65% (4006/6198; P<0.001), and ownership of at least one insecticide treated net doubled from 18% (1062/5961) to 36% (2229/6198) in the same period (P<0.001). Among infants under 1 year of age, use of any net increased from 33% (388/1180) to 56% (707/1272; P<0.001) and use of an insecticide treated net increased from 16% (188/1180) to 34% (436/1272; P<0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, household ownership was positively associated with time since programme launch, although this association did not reach statistical significance (P=0.09). Each extra year of programme operation was associated with a 9 percentage point increase in household insecticide treated net ownership (95% confidence interval -1.6 to 20). In 2005, only 7% (78/1115) of nets in households with a child under 1 year of age had been purchased with a voucher; this value increased to 50% (608/1211) in 2007 (P<0.001). In 2007, infants under 1 year in the least poor quintile were more than three times more likely to have used an insecticide treated net than infants in the poorest quintile (54% v 16%; P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The Tanzania National Voucher Scheme was associated with impressive increases in the coverage of insecticide treated nets over a two year period. Gaps in coverage remain, however, especially in the poorest groups. A voucher system that facilitates routine delivery of insecticide treated nets is a feasible option to "keep up" coverage

    BACKGROUND: The benefits of a health-related intervention may be compromised by the challenges of delivering the intervention on a large scale. We analyzed the process involved in the Tanzania National Voucher Scheme, a system for delivering insecticide-treated mosquito nets to pregnant women. We aimed to identify potential ways to equitably improve overall coverage of the intervention. METHODS: We defined five steps in the process. We collected data from a multistage cluster survey of nationally representative households conducted in 2007 across 21 districts in Tanzania. Using these data, we multiplied the rate of success of each step cumulatively to estimate the overall success of the system. RESULTS: The rate of coverage for use of insecticide-treated nets among pregnant women was 23% (95% confidence interval [CI] 19%-27%). We observed large differences in coverage by socio-economic status, from 7% (95% CI 4%-13%) among participants in the poorest households to 48% (95% CI 38%-59%) among those in the richest households. The rate of success of each step in the process was high (60%-98%). However, the cumulative rate of success for the process as a whole was low (30%). The largest and most inequitable reduction in coverage occurred in the step involving treatment of nets with insecticide. INTERPRETATION: The cumulative effect of modest attrition at several steps in the process substantially diminished the overall rate of coverage for all women, but most markedly among the poorest participants. Analysis of the process suggests that delivery of nets treated with long-lasting insecticide rather than untreated nets packaged with an insecticide-treatment kit could result in an improvement in coverage of 22 percentage points, from 30% to 52%
