    Innovation in the Construction and Property Management Industries

    Purpose – The purpose of this practice paper is to examine how the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme has been employed to introduce change and deliver business benefit in the construction industry. Design/methodology/approach – The paper begins with an introduction to the KTP scheme and its context within the University of Gloucestershire which serves as an introduction to three case studies, each one covering a 21‐24 month time span. The cases draw their empirical material from the experience of managing the KTPs, interviews, meeting minutes, board papers and final reports. Findings – All three case studies have been successful in the introduction of new thinking or new ways of working in different areas of business. In one case study, a new marketing strategy was developed and implemented; in another, a new consultancy capability has been developed and embedded in the company; and in the third, new information systems were introduced to support corporate growth. Originality/value – The value of the case studies lies in their originality and the paper highlights the value of the KTP scheme as a catalyst for the introduction of new ideas and initiatives in three different sectors of the construction industry. The paper also illustrates how academics can work productively in a commercial environment with industry partner

    Utilising solution processed zirconium acetylacetonate as an electron extracting layer in both regular and inverted small molecule organic photovoltaic cells

    Interfacial layers are commonly employed in organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells in order to improve device performance. These layers must be transparent, stable, be compatible with the photo-active materials and provide efficient charge extraction with a good energetic match to the relevant organic material. In this report we demonstrate the compatibility of zirconium acetylacetonate (ZrAcac) electron extracting layers in both regular and inverted small molecule OPV cells. When the ZrAcac was processed in both air and under N2, low work function (3.9 and 3.7 eV respectively), highly transparent layers were formed, with good energetic alignment to both C60 and hexachlorinated boron subphthalocyanine chloride (Cl6-SubPc) acceptors. Initial measurements indicate similar stabilities when using the ZrAcac in either device architecture. These results indicate that the ZrAcac layer can be used as a direct replacement for the commonly used bathocuproine (BCP) in small molecule OPV cells

    Network synchronization of groups

    In this paper we study synchronized motions in complex networks in which there are distinct groups of nodes where the dynamical systems on each node within a group are the same but are different for nodes in different groups. Both continuous time and discrete time systems are considered. We initially focus on the case where two groups are present and the network has bipartite topology (i.e., links exist between nodes in different groups but not between nodes in the same group). We also show that group synchronous motions are compatible with more general network topologies, where there are also connections within the groups

    First Simultaneous Optical and EUV Observations of the Quasi-Coherent Oscillations of SS Cygni

    Using EUV photometry obtained with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite and UBVR optical photometry obtained with the 2.7-m telescope at McDonald Observatory, we have detected quasi-coherent oscillations (so-called ``dwarf nova oscillations'') in the EUV and optical flux of the dwarf nova SS Cygni during its 1996 October outburst. There are two new results from these observations. First, we have for the first time observed ``frequency doubling:'' during the rising branch of the outburst, the period of the EUV oscillation was observed to jump from 6.59 s to 2.91 s. Second, we have for the first time observed quasi-coherent oscillations simultaneously in the optical and EUV. We find that the period and phase of the oscillations are the same in the two wavebands, finally confirming the long-held assumption that the periods of the optical and EUV/soft X-ray oscillations of dwarf novae are equal. The UBV oscillations can be simply the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the EUV oscillations if the boundary layer temperature kT_bb <~ 15 eV and hence the luminosity L_bb >~ 1.2e34 (d/75 pc)^2 erg/s (comparable to that of the accretion disk). Otherwise, the lack of a phase delay between the EUV and optical oscillations requires that the optical reprocessing site lies within the inner third of the accretion disk.     970–6 In Vivo Studies of Aortic Stenosis: Role of Inertial and Viscous Forces in Doppler/Catheter Discrepancies

    In previous studies in vitro we have used a Reynolds number approach to analyze second order effects on pressure recovery distal to stenosis. It was shown that two fundamentally different effects, viscous losses and turbulent dissipation, can control the basic overestimation due to pressure recovery at both ends of the Reynolds number scale. Having quantified this effect in vitro, this study attempted to reconcile Doppler and catheter gradients across aortic stenosis in vivo.MethodsIn 4 sheep with surgically created aortic stenosis, 30 hemodynamic states were studied (4–11 per sheep) using Millar transducers in the LV and Aorta (peak PG ranged 3–150mmHg). A Vingmed 775 interfaced to a computer was used to measure CVV velocities simultaneously with catheter recordings.ResultsInstantaneous Doppler peak gradient correlated with catheter instantaneous gradient throughout the range of baseline and stenotic conditions (r=0.973, SEE=8.7mmHg). but Doppler overestimated cath gradient (up to 70%) for all stenotic valve conditions by an average of 17%. Plotting overestimation versus Reynolds number revealed a second order profile of the shape derived in vitro. Correction of Doppler gradients using this parabolic factor reduced average overestimation from 17% to 1.5%.ConclusionsOverestimation due to pressure recovery is basic to aortic stenosis, but this overestimation can be partially canceled by two apparently unrelated effects: viscous effects and turbulent dissipation. The former is deleted from the simplified Bernoulli equation, but more importantly, the latter is not characterized by any form of the Bernoulli equation. A Reynolds number based approach characterizes the relative importance of these effects and could lead to reconciliation of Doppler and catheter gradients in the clinical setting
