    Evaluation of Cost-Effective Alternative Designs for Rural Expressway Intersections

    Despite numerous studies demonstrating the effectiveness of Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersection design, its implementation remains uneven and close to zero in some large states such as California. This research provides a comprehensive framework to estimate the operational and safety performance of future RCUT designs in California. The framework is demonstrated for five intersections located on high-speed rural expressways in California using VISSIM microsimulation models to measure operational performance for each intersection including the base condition with the existing Two-Way Stop-Controlled (TWSC) intersection and two RCUT designs. To evaluate future safety performance, the microsimulation models were further utilized to compile vehicle trajectory data to use with the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) to develop a surrogate measure-based approach to estimating future safety performance. Detailed Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) studies found that the RCUT was cost-effective and the preferred alternative. This framework may be applied to the analysis of locations where a RCUT intersection may be appropriate. The framework demonstrated here may be used by agencies to estimate the future benefits of the first-time application of treatments that have been successful elsewhere. Based on simulation results, the proposed RCUT designs reduced or eliminated the more severe crossing conflicts

    Entropy, majorization and thermodynamics in general probabilistic theories

    In this note we lay some groundwork for the resource theory of thermodynamics in general probabilistic theories (GPTs). We consider theories satisfying a purely convex abstraction of the spectral decomposition of density matrices: that every state has a decomposition, with unique probabilities, into perfectly distinguishable pure states. The spectral entropy, and analogues using other Schur-concave functions, can be defined as the entropy of these probabilities. We describe additional conditions under which the outcome probabilities of a fine-grained measurement are majorized by those for a spectral measurement, and therefore the "spectral entropy" is the measurement entropy (and therefore concave). These conditions are (1) projectivity, which abstracts aspects of the Lueders-von Neumann projection postulate in quantum theory, in particular that every face of the state space is the positive part of the image of a certain kind of projection operator called a filter; and (2) symmetry of transition probabilities. The conjunction of these, as shown earlier by Araki, is equivalent to a strong geometric property of the unnormalized state cone known as perfection: that there is an inner product according to which every face of the cone, including the cone itself, is self-dual. Using some assumptions about the thermodynamic cost of certain processes that are partially motivated by our postulates, especially projectivity, we extend von Neumann's argument that the thermodynamic entropy of a quantum system is its spectral entropy to generalized probabilistic systems satisfying spectrality.Comment: In Proceedings QPL 2015, arXiv:1511.0118

    Facile syntheses of building blocks for the construction of phosphotyrosine mimetics

    The copper-catalysed zinc phosphonate chemistry described by Yokomatsu and Shibuya can be used to enter the classical organometallic coupling repertoire via Stille and Suzuki–Miyaura couplings. 1,4-Diiodobenzene underwent coupling with the organozinc reagent derived from diethyl bromodifluoromethylphosphonate with copper(I) catalysis to afford diethyl (4-iodophenyl)difluoromethylphosphonate. Higher yielding couplings were run with (4-trifluoromethylsulfonyloxy)- and (4-nonafluorobutylsulfonyloxy)-iodobenzenes. The iodide and the triflate coupled under palladium-catalysed conditions with a range of stannanes and boronic acids in moderate to excellent yields. Shibuya–Yokomatsu couplings were also successful with more functionalised iodoarenes and heteroarenes presenting the important phosphate mimic on a range of scaffolds

    Agreement Between the Stages Cycling and SRM Powermeter Systems during Field-Based Off-Road Climbing.

    The aim of this study was to determine the agreement between two portable cycling powermeters for use doing field based mountain biking. A single participant performed 15 timed ascents of an off-road climbs. The participants bicycle was instrumented with Stages Cycling and SRM powermeters. Mean and peak power output and cadence were recorded at 1 s intervals by both systems. Significant differences were determined using paired t-tests, whilst agreement was determined using 95% ratio limits of agreement (LoA). Significant differences were found between the two systems for mean power output (p<.001), with the Stages powermeter under reporting power by 8 % compared to the SRM. LoA for mean power output were 0.92 ×÷ 1.02 (95% LoA = 0.90 – 0.93). Peak power output was also significantly lower with the Stages powermeter (p=.02) by 5 % when compared to the SRM powermeter. LoA for peak power output were 0.94 ×÷ 1.09 (95% limits of agreement = 0.87 – 1.03). Significant differences were found for mean cadence between the two powermeters (p=.009), with LoA being 0.99 ×÷ 1.01 (95% limits of agreement = 0.99 – 1.00). This study found that though the Stages Cycling powermeter provided a reliable means of recording power output and cadence, the system significantly underestimated mean and peak power output when compared with the SRM system. This may in part be due to differences in strain gauge configuration and the subsequent algorithms used in the calculation of power output and the potential influence of bilateral imbalances within the muscles may have on these calculations
