Photometric Redshift Biases from Galaxy Evolution
Proposed cosmological surveys will make use of photometric redshifts of
galaxies that are significantly fainter than any complete spectroscopic
redshift surveys that exist to train the photo-z methods. We investigate the
photo-z biases that result from known differences between the faint and bright
populations: a rise in AGN activity toward higher redshift, and a metallicity
difference between intrinsically luminous and faint early-type galaxies. We
find that even very small mismatches between the mean photometric target and
the training set can induce photo-z biases large enough to corrupt derived
cosmological parameters significantly. A metallicity shift of ~0.003dex in an
old population, or contamination of any galaxy spectrum with ~0.2% AGN flux, is
sufficient to induce a 10^-3 bias in photo-z. These results highlight the
danger in extrapolating the behavior of bright galaxies to a fainter
population, and the desirability of a spectroscopic training set that spans all
of the characteristics of the photo-z targets, i.e. extending to the 25th mag
or fainter galaxies that will be used in future surveys

Harmonization of space-borne infra-red sensors measuring sea surface temperature
Sea surface temperature (SST) is observed by a constellation of sensors, and SST retrievals
are commonly combined into gridded SST analyses and climate data records (CDRs). Differential
biases between SSTs from different sensors cause errors in such products, including feature artefacts.
We introduce a new method for reducing differential biases across the SST constellation, by reconciling
the brightness temperature (BT) calibration and SST retrieval parameters between sensors. We use the
Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) and the Sea and Land Surface Temperature
Radiometer (SLSTR) as reference sensors, and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer
(AVHRR) of the MetOp-A mission to bridge the gap between these references. Observations across a
range of AVHRR zenith angles are matched with dual-view three-channel skin SST retrievals from
the AATSR and SLSTR. These skin SSTs act as the harmonization reference for AVHRR retrievals
by optimal estimation (OE). Parameters for the harmonized AVHRR OE are iteratively determined,
including BT bias corrections and observation error covariance matrices as functions of water-vapor
path. The OE SSTs obtained from AVHRR are shown to be closely consistent with the reference sensor
SSTs. Independent validation against drifting buoy SSTs shows that the AVHRR OE retrieval is stable
across the reference-sensor gap. We discuss that this method is suitable to improve consistency across
the whole constellation of SST sensors. The approach will help stabilize and reduce errors in future
SST CDRs, as well as having application to other domains of remote sensing
Rheology of Ring Polymer Melts: From Linear Contaminants to Ring/Linear Blends
Ring polymers remain a major challenge to our current understanding of
polymer dynamics. Experimental results are difficult to interpret because of
the uncertainty in the purity and dispersity of the sample. Using both
equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations we have
systematically investigated the structure, dynamics and rheology of perfectly
controlled ring/linear polymer blends with chains of such length and
flexibility that the number of entanglements is up to about 14 per chain, which
is comparable to experimental systems examined in the literature. The smallest
concentration at which linear contaminants increase the zero-shear viscosity of
a ring polymer melt of these chain lengths by 10% is approximately one-fifth of
their overlap concentration. When the two architectures are present in equal
amounts the viscosity of the blend is approximately twice as large as that of
the pure linear melt. At this concentration the diffusion coefficient of the
rings is found to decrease dramatically, while the static and dynamic
properties of the linear polymers are mostly unaffected. Our results are

Risk assessment and predicting outcomes in patients with depressive symptoms: a review of potential role of peripheral blood based biomarkers
Depression is one of the major global health challenges and a leading contributor of health related disability and costs. Depression is a heterogeneous disorder and current methods for assessing its severity in clinical practice rely on symptom count, however this approach is unreliable and inconsistent. The clinical evaluation of depressive symptoms is particularly challenging in primary care, where the majority of patients with depression are managed, due to the presence of co-morbidities. Current methods for risk assessment of depression do not accurately predict treatment response or clinical outcomes. Several biological pathways have been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression; however, accurate and predictive biomarkers remain elusive. We conducted a systematic review of the published evidence supporting the use of peripheral biomarkers to predict outcomes in depression, using Medline and Embase. Peripheral biomarkers in depression were found to be statistically significant predictors of mental health outcomes such as treatment response, poor outcome and symptom remission; and physical health outcomes such as increased incidence of cardiovascular events and deaths, and all-cause mortality. However, the available evidence has multiple methodological limitations which must be overcome to make any real clinical progress. Despite extensive research on the relationship of depression with peripheral biomarkers, its translational application in practice remains uncertain. In future, peripheral biomarkers identified with novel techniques and combining multiple biomarkers may have a potential role in depression risk assessment but further research is needed in this area
A triple-drug treatment regimen to accelerate elimination of lymphatic filariasis: From conception to delivery
The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is using mass drug administration (MDA) of antifilarial medications to treat filarial infections, prevent disease and interrupt transmission. Almost 500 million people receive these medications each year. Clinical trials have recently shown that a single dose of a triple-drug combination comprised of ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine and albendazole (IDA) is dramatically superior to widely used two-drug combinations for clearing larval filarial parasites from the blood of infected persons. A large multicenter community study showed that IDA was well-tolerated when it was provided as MDA. IDA was rapidly advanced from clinical trial to policy and implementation; it has the potential to accelerate LF elimination in many endemic countries
Investigation into the Ratio of Operating and Support Costs to Life-Cycle Costs for DoD Weapon Systems
Recent legislation, such as the Weapon Systems Acquisition Reform Act of 2009, requires a renewed emphasis on understanding Operating and Support (O&S) costs. Conventional wisdom within the acquisition community suggests a 70:30 cost ratio with respect to O&S and acquisition of an average weapon system. Using 37 Air Force and Navy programs, the authors estimate the mean overall ratio of O&S costs to acquisition costs to be closer to 55:45, although many weapon systems displayed significant deviation from this 55 percent average. Contributing factors such as life expectancy and acquisition strategy (i.e., new system or modification) affect this variance. Their research advises against using a single “one-size-fits-all” O&S/ acquisition cost ratio for all major DoD weapon systems

Development and introduction of the Filariasis Test Strip: A new diagnostic test for the Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis
A key component to achieving the global goal of elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is the availability of appropriate tools for disease mapping, monitoring, and surveillance. However, the development of these tools for a neglected disease such as LF can be a challenge. The lack of a commercial market and low familiarity with these diseases leave little incentive for diagnostic manufacturers to invest in this space. The Filarial Test Strip (FTS) development story provides a case study on how a multi-stakeholder, public-private partnership model facilitated the development, evaluation, and introduction of a new monitoring and surveillance tool for LF. This paper will reflect on the experience with the FTS and document the process from development of the target product profile to adoption and scale-up in country programs. Lessons learned from both the successes and challenges experienced during this process may help inform future efforts to develop and introduce new diagnostic or surveillance tools for neglected diseases
Rapid Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables. XV. HT Camelopardalis (= RX J0757.0+6306)
We present photometry and spectroscopy of HT Camelopardalis, a recently
discovered X-ray-bright cataclysmic variable. The spectrum shows bright lines
of H, He I, and He II, all moving with a period of 0.059712(1) d, which we
interpret as the orbital period. The star's brightness varies with a strict
period of 515.0592(2) s, and a mean full amplitude of 0.11 mag. These
properties qualify it as a /bona fide/ DQ Herculis star (intermediate polar) --
in which the magnetism of the rapidly rotating white dwarf channels accretion
flow to the surface. Normally at V=17.8, the star shows rare and very brief
outbursts to V=12-13. We observed one in December 2001, and found that the 515
s pulse amplitude had increased by a factor of ~100 (in flux units). A
