SSME main injector 4000 Hertz phenomenon
Several Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSME) have experienced very high acceleration responses measured in the main injector of the powerhead during static firings. Data from previous hot fire SSME tests relating to the 4000 hertz phenomenon were reviewed to provide a better understanding of the nature of this structural response. The objective was to technically understand the way this phenomenon works, recommend a fix and test the fix
Time Delay Induced Death in Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators
We investigate the dynamical behaviour of two limit cycle oscillators that
interact with each other via time delayed coupling and find that time delay can
lead to amplitude death of the oscillators even if they have the same
frequency. We demonstrate that this novel regime of amplitude "death" also
exists for large collections of coupled identical oscillators and provide
quantitative measures of this death region in the parameter space of coupling
strength and time delay. Its implication for certain biological and physical
applications is also pointed out.Comment: 4 aps formatted revtex pages; 3 figures; to be published in Phys.

Synthesis, Structure, and Ferromagnetism of a New Oxygen Defect Pyrochlore System Lu2V2O_{7-x} (x = 0.40-0.65)
A new fcc oxygen defect pyrochlore structure system Lu2V2O_{7-x} with x =
0.40 to 0.65 was synthesized from the known fcc ferromagnetic semiconductor
pyrochlore compound Lu2V2O7 which can be written as Lu2V2O6O' with two
inequivalent oxygen sites O and O'. Rietveld x-ray diffraction refinements
showed significant Lu-V antisite disorder for x >= 0.5. The lattice parameter
versus x (including x = 0) shows a distinct maximum at x ~ 0.4. We propose that
these observations can be explained if the oxygen defects are on the O'
sublattice of the structure. The magnetic susceptibility versus temperature
exhibits Curie-Weiss behavior above 150 K for all x, with a Curie constant C
that increases with x as expected in an ionic model. However, the magnetization
measurements also show that the (ferromagnetic) Weiss temperature theta and the
ferromagnetic ordering temperature T_C both strongly decrease with increasing x
instead of increasing as expected from C(x). The T_C decreases from 73 K for x
= 0 to 21 K for x = 0.65. Furthermore, the saturation moment at a field of 5.5
T at 5 K is nearly independent of x, with the value expected for a fixed spin
1/2 per V. The latter three observations suggest that Lu2V2O_{7-x} may contain
localized spin 1/2 vanadium moments in a metallic background that is induced by
oxygen defect doping, instead of being a semiconductor as suggested by the C(x)
dependence.Comment: 9 pages including 7 figures, 3 table
Chromaticity in all-reflective telescopes for astrometry
Chromatic effects are usually associated with refractive optics, so
reflective telescopes are assumed to be free from them. We show that
all-reflective optics still bears significant levels of such perturbations,
which is especially critical to modern micro-arcsecond astrometric experiments.
We analyze the image formation and measurement process to derive a precise
definition of the chromatic variation of the image position, and we evaluate
the key aspects of optical design with respect to chromaticity. The fundamental
requirement related to chromaticity is the symmetry of the optical design and
of the wavefront errors. Finally, we address some optical engineering issues,
such as manufacturing and alignment, providing recommendations to minimize the
degradation that chromaticity introduces into astrometry.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

Evidence for very strong electron-phonon coupling in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6}
From the observed oxygen-isotope shift of the mid-infrared two-magnon
absorption peak of YBaCuO, we evaluate the oxygen-isotope
effect on the in-plane antiferromagnetic exchange energy . The exchange
energy in YBaCuO is found to decrease by about 0.9% upon
replacing O by O, which is slightly larger than that (0.6%) in
LaCuO. From the oxygen-isotope effects, we determine the lower
limit of the polaron binding energy, which is about 1.7 eV for
YBaCuO and 1.5 eV for LaCuO, in quantitative
agreement with angle-resolved photoemission data, optical conductivity data,
and the parameter-free theoretical estimate. The large polaron binding energies
in the insulating parent compounds suggest that electron-phonon coupling should
also be strong in doped superconducting cuprates and may play an essential role
in high-temperature superconductivity.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Electrochemical deposition of silver crystals aboard Skylab 4
Silver crystals were grown aboard Skylab 4 by an electro-chemical reaction and subsequently returned to earth for comparison with crystals grown at 1- and 5-g. Both the Skylab and earth-grown crystals show a variety of structures. Certain tendencies in structure dependency on gravity level, however, can be discerned. In addition, downward growing dendrite streamers; upward growing chunky crystal streamers; growth along an air/liquid interface; and ribbon, film, and fiber crystal habits were observed in experiments conducted on the ground with solutions of varying concentrations. It was also observed that the crystal structures of space and ground electro-deposited silver crystals were very similar to the structures of germanium selenide and germanium telluride crystals grown in space and on the ground by a vapor transport technique. Consideration of the data leads to the conclusions that: (1) the rate of electrochemical displacement of silver ions from a 5 percent aqueous solution by copper is predominantly diffussion controlled in space and kinetically controlled in 1- and higher-g because of augmentation of mass transport by convection; (2) downward and upward crystal streamers are the result of gravity-driven convection, the flow patterns of which can be delineated. Lateral growths along an air/liquid interface are the result of surface-tension-driven convection, the pattern of which also can be delineated; (3) electrolysis in space or low-g environments can produce either dendritic crystals with more perfect microcrystalline structures or massive, single crystals with fewer defects than those grown on ground or at higher g-levels. Ribbons or films of space-grown silicon crystals would find a ready market for electronic substrate and photocell applications. Space-grown dendritic, metal crystals present the possibility of unique catalysts. Large perfect crystals of various materials are desired for a number of electronic and optical applications; and (4) vapor transport growth of germanium selenide and germanium telluride is affected by convection mechanisms similar to the mechanisms hypothesized for the electrochemical deposition of silver crystals. Evidence and considerations leading to the preceding summaries and conclusions are presented. The implications of the findings and conclusions for technological applications are discussed, and recommendations for further experiments are presented
