    Is the Sgr dSph a dark matter dominated system?

    We study the evolution of possible progenitors of Sgr dSph}using several numerical N-body simulations of different dwarf spheroidal galaxies both with and without dark matter, as they orbit the Milky Way. The barionic and dark components of the dwarfs were made obeying a Plummer and NFW potentials of one million particles respectively. The Milky Way was modeled like a tree-component rigid potential and the simulations were performed using a modified Gadget-2 code. We found that none of the simulated galaxies without dark matter reproduced the physical properties observed in Sgr dSph, suggesting that, at the beginning of its evolution, Sgr dSph might have been immersed in a dark matter halo. The simulations of progenitors immersed in dark matter halos suggest that Sgr dSph at its beginning might have been an extended system, i.e. its Plummer radius could have had a value approximated to 1.2 kpc or higher; furthermore, this galaxy could have been immersed in a dark halo with a mass higher than 10^8 solar masses.     Tensionless structure of glassy phase

    We study a class of homogeneous finite-dimensional Ising models which were recently shown to exhibit glassy properties. Monte Carlo simulations of a particular three-dimensional model in this class show that the glassy phase obtained under slow cooling is dominated by large scale excitations whose energy ElE_l scales with their size ll as EllΘE_l\sim l^{\Theta} with Θ1.33(5)\Theta\sim 1.33(5). Simulations suggest that in another model of this class, namely the four-spin model, energy is concentrated mainly in linear defects making also in this case domain walls tensionless. Two-dimensinal variants of these models are trivial and energy of excitations scales with the exponent Θ=1.05(5)\Theta=1.05(5).Comment: 5 page

    Herd-level risk factors of bovine tuberculosis in England and Wales after the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease epidemic

    We present the results of a 2005 case–control study of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) breakdowns in English and Welsh herds. The herd management, farming practices, and environmental factors of 401matched pairs of case and control herds were investigated to provide a picture of herd-level risk factors in areas of varying bTB incidence. A global conditional logistic regression model, with region-specific variants, was used to compare case herds that had experienced a confirmed bTB breakdown to contemporaneous control herds matched on region, herd type, herd size, and parish testing interval. Contacts with cattle from contiguous herds and sourcing cattle from herds with a recent history of bTB were associated with an increased risk in both the global and regional analyses. Operating a farm over several premises, providing cattle feed inside the housing, and the presence of badgers were also identified as significantly associated with an increased bTB risk. Steps taken to minimize cattle contacts with neighboring herds and altering trading practices could have the potential to reduce the size of the bTB epidemic. In principle, limiting the interactions between cattle and wildlife may also be useful; however this study did not highlight any specific measures to implement

    Measuring proper motions of isolated neutron stars with Chandra

    The excellent spatial resolution of the Chandra observatory offers the unprecedented possibility to measure proper motions at X-ray wavelength with relatively high accuracy using as reference the background of extragalactic or remote galactic X-ray sources. We took advantage of this capability to constrain the proper motion of RX J0806.4-4123 and RX J0420.0-5022, two X-ray bright and radio quiet isolated neutron stars (INSs) discovered by ROSAT and lacking an optical counterpart. In this paper, we present results from a preliminary analysis from which we derive 2 sigma upper limits of 76 mas/yr and 138 mas/yr on the proper motions of RX J0806.4-4123 and RX J0420.0-5022 respectively. We use these values together with those of other ROSAT discovered INSs to constrain the origin, distance and evolutionary status of this particular group of objects. We find that the tangential velocities of radio quiet ROSAT neutron stars are probably consistent with those of 'normal' pulsars. Their distribution on the sky and, for those having accurate proper motion vectors, their possible birth places, all point to a local population, probably created in the part of the Gould Belt nearest to the earth.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Astrophysics and Space Science, in the proceedings of "Isolated Neutron Stars: from the Interior to the Surface", edited by D.     Magnetic properties of a new molecular-based spin-ladder system: (5IAP)2CuBr4*2H2O

    We have synthesized and characterized a new spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder: bis 5-iodo-2-aminopyridinium tetrabromocuprate(II) dihydrate. X-ray diffraction studies show the structure of the compound to consist of well isolated stacked ladders and the interaction between the Cu(2+) atoms to be due to direct Br...Br contacts. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization studies show the compound to be in the strong-coupling limit, with the interaction along the rungs (J' ~ 13 K) much greater than the interaction along the rails (J ~ 1 K). Magnetic critical fields are observed near 8.3 T and 10.4 T, respectively, establishing the existence of the energy gap.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.     Capturing and Quantifying Particle Transcytosis with Microphysiological Intestine-on-Chip Models

    Understanding the intestinal transport of particles is critical in several fields ranging from optimizing drug delivery systems to capturing health risks from the increased presence of nano- and micro-sized particles in human environment. While Caco-2 cell monolayers grown on permeable supports are the traditional in vitro model used to probe intestinal absorption of dis-solved molecules, they fail to recapitulate the transcytotic activity of polar-ized enterocytes. Here, an intestine-on-chip model is combined with in silico modeling to demonstrate that the rate of particle transcytosis is ≈350× higher across Caco-2 cell monolayers exposed to fluid shear stress compared to Caco-2 cells in standard “static” configuration. This relates to profound phe-notypical alterations and highly polarized state of cells grown under mechan-ical stimulation and it is shown that transcytosis in the microphysiological model is energy-dependent and involves both clathrin and macropinocytosis mediated endocytic pathways. Finally, it is demonstrated that the increased rate of transcytosis through cells exposed to flow is explained by a higher rate of internal particle transport (i.e., vesicular cellular trafficking and baso-lateral exocytosis), rather than a change in apical uptake (i.e., binding and endocytosis). Taken together, the findings have important implications for addressing research questions concerning intestinal transport of engineered and environmental particles.Ludivine C.     Porosity Reduction in the High-Speed Processing of Glass-Fiber Composites by Resin Transfer Molding (RTM)

    High-speed processing is essential to achieve lower production cost in the fabrication of fiber-reinforced composites with the current liquid molding practices. A major consequence of increasing the resin injection velocity is the formation of defects such as voids and dry regions that decrease the load-bearing capability of the composite. Void formation mechanisms and analytical predictions of the detrimental effect of porosity on the structural integrity of molded parts have been studied extensively. In contrast, knowledge of void removal strategies is very limited. In this investigation, various postfill pressure levels were applied to disk-shaped random-mat glass/epoxy parts molded at high volumetric flow rates as a method to reduce their voidage content. Quantitative image analysis over cross-sections cut from these composites revealed that significant changes in porosity concentration take place with the postfill pressure. For instance, overall void content dropped more than 70% with the application of a postfill pressure as low as 300 kPa. Other important void morphometry characteristics such as void shape, size, and spatial distribution could also be manipulated by this method. As the packing pressure increases, large voids gradually disappear, and at the same time, the small circular voids are mobilized towards radial locations near the vents. In addition to this spatial voidage gradient in the radial direction, voidage gradient also exists through the specimen thickness. It seems that higher front velocities promote the appearance of secondary flow phenomena inside the mold cavity (e.g. microfountain flow), which may explain why more voids tend to concentrate at the surface of the specimen irrespective of the postfill pressure level reached inside the mold.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

    Isospin Effects in Nuclear Multifragmentation

    We develop an improved Statistical Multifragmentation Model that provides the capability to calculate calorimetric and isotopic observables with precision. With this new model we examine the influence of nuclear isospin on the fragment elemental and isotopic distributions. We show that the proposed improvements on the model are essential for studying isospin effects in nuclear multifragmentation. In particular, these calculations show that accurate comparisons to experimental data require that the nuclear masses, free energies and secondary decay must be handled with higher precision than many current models accord.Comment: 46 pages, 16 figure
