Generating sequential space-filling designs using genetic algorithms and Monte Carlo methods
In this paper, the authors compare a Monte Carlo method and an optimization-based approach using genetic algorithms for sequentially generating space-filling experimental designs. It is shown that Monte Carlo methods perform better than genetic algorithms for this specific problem
Detection of Aspergillus-specific antibodies by agar gel double immunodiffusion and IgG ELISA in feline upper respiratory tract aspergillosis.
Highlights: Feline antibodies against cryptic Aspergillus spp. cross react with an aspergillin containing A. fumigatus antigens. • Brachycephalic cats are prone to upper respiratory tract aspergillosis (URTA). • The agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) assay has low sensitivity for diagnosis of URTA. • IgG ELISA has high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of URTA. • This study provides evidence that cats with URTA are systemically immunocompetent. Abstract Feline upper respiratory tract aspergillosis (URTA) is an emerging infectious disease. The aims of this study were: (1) to assess the diagnostic value of detection of Aspergillus-specific antibodies using an agar gel double immunodiffusion (AGID) assay and an indirect immunoglobulin G (IgG) ELISA; and (2) to determine if an aspergillin derived from mycelia of Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus can be used to detect serum antibodies against cryptic Aspergillus spp. in Aspergillus section Fumigati. Sera from cats with URTA (group 1: n = 21) and two control groups (group 2: cats with other upper respiratory tract diseases, n = 25; group 3: healthy cats and cats with non-respiratory, non-fungal illness, n = 84) were tested. Isolates from cats with URTA comprised A. fumigatus (n = 5), A. flavus (n = 1) and four cryptic species: Aspergillus felis (n = 12), Aspergillus thermomutatus (Neosartorya pseudofischeri, n = 1), Aspergillus lentulus (n = 1) and Aspergillus udagawae (n = 1). Brachycephalic purebred cats were significantly more likely to develop URTA than other breeds (P = 0.013). The sensitivity (Se) of the AGID was 43% and the specificity (Sp) was 100%. At a cut-off value of 6 ELISA units/mL, the Se of the IgG ELISA was 95.2% and the Sp was 92% and 92.9% for groups 2 and 3 cats, respectively. Aspergillus-specific antibodies against all four cryptic species were detected in one or both assays. Assay Se was not associated with species identity. Detection of Aspergillus-specific antibodies by IgG ELISA has high Se and Sp for diagnosis of feline URTA. Deep Inelastic Scattering from off-Shell Nucleons
We derive the general structure of the hadronic tensor required to describe
deep-inelastic scattering from an off-shell nucleon within a covariant
formalism. Of the large number of possible off-shell structure functions we
find that only three contribute in the Bjorken limit. In our approach the usual
ambiguities encountered when discussing problems related to off-shellness in
deep-inelastic scattering are not present. The formulation therefore provides a
clear framework within which one can discuss the various approximations and
assumptions which have been used in earlier work. As examples, we investigate
scattering from the deuteron, nuclear matter and dressed nucleons. The results
of the full calculation are compared with those where various aspects of the
off-shell structure are neglected, as well as with those of the convolution
model.Comment: 36 pages RevTeX, 9 figures (available upon request), ADP-93-210/T128,

Negative Kaons in Dense Baryonic Matter
Kaon polarization operator in dense baryonic matter of arbitrary isotopic
composition is calculated including s- and p-wave kaon-baryon interactions. The
regular part of the polarization operator is extracted from the realistic
kaon-nucleon interaction based on the chiral and 1/N_c expansion. Contributions
of the Lambda(1116), Sigma(1195), Sigma*(1385) resonances are taken explicitly
into account in the pole and regular terms with inclusion of mean-field
potentials. The baryon-baryon correlations are incorporated and fluctuation
contributions are estimated. Results are applied for K- in neutron star matter.
Within our model a second-order phase transition to the s-wave K- condensate
state occurs at rho_c \gsim 4 \rho_0 once the baryon-baryon correlations are
included. We show that the second-order phase transition to the p-wave
condensate state may occur at densities in
dependence on the parameter choice. We demonstrate that a first-order phase
transition to a proton-enriched (approximately isospin-symmetric) nucleon
matter with a p-wave K- condensate can occur at smaller densities, \rho\lsim 2
\rho_0. The transition is accompanied by the suppression of hyperon
concentrations.Comment: 41 pages, 24 figures, revtex4 styl
