Topological gravity localization on a delta-function like Brane

Besides the String Theory context, the quantum General Relativity can be studied by the use of constrained topological field theories. In the celebrated Plebanski formalism, the constraints connecting topological field theories and gravity are imposed in space-times with trivial topology. In the braneworld context there are two distinct regions of the space-time, namely, the bulk and the braneworld volume. In this work we show how to construct topological gravity in a scenario containing one extra dimension and a delta-function like 3-brane which naturally emerges from a spontaneously broken discrete symmetry. Starting from a D=5 theory we obtain the action for General Relativity in the Palatini form in the bulk as well as in the braneworld volume. This result is important for future insights about quantum gravity in brane scenarios.Comment: 4 page

A new puzzle for random interaction

    Get PDF
We continue a series of numerical experiments on many-body systems with random two-body interactions, by examining correlations in ratios in excitation energies of yrast JJ = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 states. Previous studies, limited only to JJ = 0,2,4 states, had shown strong correlations in boson systems but not fermion systems. By including J≥6J \ge 6 states and considering different scatter plots, strong and realistic correlations appear in both boson and fermion systems. Such correlations are a challenge to explanations of random interactions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Assessment of the effectiveness of maintenance management systems in delivering quality maintenance services in higher institutions

The study assessed the effectiveness of maintenance and management systems in delivering quality maintenance services in higher institutions of learning with specific focus on the University of Lagos. There is the need for effectiveness in the management of educational buildings, facilities and supporting services. Self-structured questionnaires were administered to one hundred and ninety-one questionnaires (191) resident students of the University of Lagos, and three (3) to the maintenance executives of the Works and Physical Planning Department of the University of Lagos, with response rates of 71.73% and 100% respectively. Data collected where analysed using a combination of the Mean ranking and T-Test. Findings revealed a general dissatisfaction with the service quality delivered as the maintenance management system was not adjudged to be as effective as expected as various obstacles and factors influence the acceptable standard and quality of maintenance. The study recommended that the maintenance management team should improve on the effectiveness of their service delivery, by improving the rate of responsiveness of the maintenance staff through thorough training of skill and technical know-ho

Structural and Magnetic Dynamics in the Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy Ni2_2MnGa

Magnetic shape memory Heusler alloys are multiferroics stabilized by the correlations between electronic, magnetic and structural order. To study these correlations we use time resolved x-ray diffraction and magneto-optical Kerr effect experiments to measure the laser induced dynamics in a Heusler alloy Ni2_2MnGa film and reveal a set of timescales intrinsic to the system. We observe a coherent phonon which we identify as the amplitudon of the modulated structure and an ultrafast phase transition leading to a quenching of the incommensurate modulation within 300~fs with a recovery time of a few ps. The thermally driven martensitic transition to the high temperature cubic phase proceeds via nucleation within a few ps and domain growth limited by the speed of sound. The demagnetization time is 320~fs, which is comparable to the quenching of the structural modulation.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Supplementary materials 5 pages, 5 figure

We give a lower bound for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on a compact domain of a Riemannian spin manifold under the \MIT bag boundary condition. The limiting case is characterized by the existence of an imaginary Killing spinor.Comment: 10 page

    Drug-Loaded, Bivalent-Bottle-Brush Polymers by Graft-through ROMP

Graft through ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using ruthenium N heterocyclic carbene catalysts has enabled the synthesis of bottle-brush polymers with unprecedented ease and control Here we report the first bivalent-brush polymers, these materials were prepared by graft through ROMP of drug-loaded poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) based macromonomers (MMs) Anticancer drugs doxorubicin (DOX) and camptothecin (CT) were attached to a norbornene alkyne-PEG MM via a photocleavable linker ROMP of either or both drug loaded MMs generated brush homo and copolymers with low polydispersities and defined molecular weights. Release of free DOX and CT from these materials was initiated by exposure to 365 nm light All of the CT and DOX polymers were at least 10 fold more toxic to human cancer cells after photoinitiated drug release while a copolymer carrying both CT and DOX displayed 30-fold increased toxicity upon irradiation Graft through ROMP of drug loaded macromonomers provides a general method for the systematic study of structure function relationships for stimuli responsive polymers in biological systems

    Generalized seniority from random Hamiltonians

    Get PDF
We investigate the generic pairing properties of shell-model many-body Hamiltonians drawn from ensembles of random two-body matrix elements. Many features of pairing that are commonly attributed to the interaction are in fact seen in a large part of the ensemble space. Not only do the spectra show evidence of pairing with favored J=0 ground states and an energy gap, but the relationship between ground state wave functions of neighboring nuclei show signatures of pairing as well. Matrix elements of pair creation/annihilation operators between ground states tend to be strongly enhanced. Furthermore, the same or similar pair operators connect several ground states along an isotopic chain. This algebraic structure is reminiscent of the generalized seniority model. Thus pairing may be encoded to a certain extent in the Fock space connectivity of the interacting shell model even without specific features of the interaction required.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
