His message: For the past ten years, I have openly declared my belief that unless the trade union movement in this country seizes the political initiative and organizes a labor party, it will never again be the force it once was. Responding to this challenge, in October 1993, some 80 trade unionist\u27s from 23 states voted to convene a founding convention. Then, in the spring of this year, LPA\u27S interim steering committee endorsed a proposal to hold the convention in Denver in 1995

    Variation in seed set amongst populations of a rodent pollinated geophyte, Colchicum coloratum

    AbstractAgricultural activities around the rural village of Nieuwoudtville in the Succulent Karoo region of South Africa has lead to the confinement of many plant and animal species to fragmented patches of relatively untransformed habitat. The geophyte Colchicum coloratum subsp. coloratum (Colchicaceae) was studied in five patches of variable size in and around Nieuwoudtville. This species is dependent on rodent visitation for seed production. The influence of variation in population size and plant size on seed set was investigated, as well as whether there is pollen limitation in this species. A pollen-supplementation experiment indicates that there is pollen limitation in C. coloratum, and that much of the natural seed set could be the result of pollinator-mediated selfing. The five populations appeared to have different rodent abundances, however, neither population size nor the abundance of rodents in the area have an effect on seed set. This suggests that the mutualism between C. colchicum and its rodent pollinators is robust, and that habitat fragmentation in Nieuwoudtville has not yet affected the seed production of this geophyte

    Effect of Late Season Supplementation on Performance of Yearling Steers Grazing Mixed Native Range or Cool Season, Russian Wildrye Pastures

    Seventy-six yearling, black-baldy steers were utilized in a grazing experiment to study the effect of Level of Late summer, early fall protein supplement (1 versus 2 lb., 40% all natural) and type of f all pasture (mixed native range versus Russian wildrye) on average daily gain. Cattle were purchased i n May as part of a larger group and gained at the rate of 1.4 lb. per head daily prior to initiation of the study on September 1, 1987. Average daily gain was not affected by pasture type. Steers grazing native range and Russian wildrye gained .81 and .72 lb. per head daily, respectively, during September and October. Daily gain was significantly (P\u3c.05) greater for steers receiving 2 lb. of supplement than for steers receiving 1 lb. (1.01 vs .515 lb..per head daily, respectively). Providing 2 lb. of a 40% all natural protein supplement improved range utilization for growth

    CALCULATED TRANSIENT PRESSURES DUE TO IMPULSE AND RAMP PERTURBATIONS TO VENTILATING SYSTEMS IN BUILDINGS 3019, 3026, 3508, AND 4507

    As part of a general hazard review survey conducted by the Chemical Technology Division of its facilities, transient pressures due to impulse and ramp perturbations to the cell ventilating systems of buildings 3019, 3026, and 4607 and the closed glove box system of 3508 were calculated. From the portions of the pressure curves above atmospheric pressure, volumes of gas outleakage were estimated; thus the amount of activity released can be calculated if an estimate of the activity concentration is available. The volumes of outleakage for all four ventilating systems were small for reasonable sizes of perturbations. For an impulse perturbation causing an instantaneous rise of +8.0 in- H/sub 2/0, the length of time above atmospheric pressure and estimated outleakages for PRFP cells in 3019 are 1.5 sec and 3.1 ft/sup 3/, respectively; for volatility cell 1 in 3019, 0.33 sec and 0.45 ft3; for cell A in 3026, 2.1 sec and 3.0 ft/sup 3/; for a glove box in 3508, 0.066 sec and 0.04 ft/sup 3/; and a cell in 4507, 0.26 sec and 0.03 ft/sup 3/.     Observations Concerning the Effects of Ruminal Evacuation on Intake and Ruminal Recovery of Dry Matter

    The effect of repeated total ruminal evacuations on feed intake and animal behavior and rate of ruminal recovery expressed as percentage of feed bunk dry matter disappearance were observed in an observation trial with six Angus crossbred steers. Evacuation stimulated meal size and daily intake in comparison to that of a previous feeding. Feed intake decreased with consecutive evacuations. Two evacuation cycles at a 2-day interval may be the practical Limit to frequency of evacuations without a 1 to 2-week recovery period. Rate of recovery of dry matter from the rumen over a 4-hour period was extremely variable and not correlated with feed intake during the same period
