    CALCULATED TRANSIENT PRESSURES DUE TO IMPULSE AND RAMP PERTURBATIONS TO VENTILATING SYSTEMS IN BUILDINGS 3019, 3026, 3508, AND 4507

    As part of a general hazard review survey conducted by the Chemical Technology Division of its facilities, transient pressures due to impulse and ramp perturbations to the cell ventilating systems of buildings 3019, 3026, and 4607 and the closed glove box system of 3508 were calculated. From the portions of the pressure curves above atmospheric pressure, volumes of gas outleakage were estimated; thus the amount of activity released can be calculated if an estimate of the activity concentration is available. The volumes of outleakage for all four ventilating systems were small for reasonable sizes of perturbations. For an impulse perturbation causing an instantaneous rise of +8.0 in- H/sub 2/0, the length of time above atmospheric pressure and estimated outleakages for PRFP cells in 3019 are 1.5 sec and 3.1 ft/sup 3/, respectively; for volatility cell 1 in 3019, 0.33 sec and 0.45 ft3; for cell A in 3026, 2.1 sec and 3.0 ft/sup 3/; for a glove box in 3508, 0.066 sec and 0.04 ft/sup 3/; and a cell in 4507, 0.26 sec and 0.03 ft/sup 3/.     Non-Peer ReviewedFoxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv., golden German millet, Italian millet) use as a fodder in Saskatchewan is currently increasing especially for swath grazing. Using Foxtail millet in swath grazing can extend the grazing season and reduce the cost of feeding cattle in the winter (McCaughey, et al. 2002; May et al. 2007). For this practice to be successful inexpensive weed control measures are needed. Foxtail millet’s growth in the spring can be slow under cool conditions, allowing broadleaf weeds to get established and reduce the biomass of the foxtail millet. Currently, only bromoxynil and bentazone (Basagran Forté) are registered for use in Saskatchewan. The weed sprectrum of bromoxynil does not control several weeds including Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.) and cleavers (Galium aparine L.). Bentazone is expensive and requires larger water volumes than growers are willing to use. Therefore, improved control options for foxtail millet are required

    Shell model Monte Carlo calculations for Dy-170

    We present the first auxiliary field Monte Carlo calculations for a rare earth nucleus, Dy-170. A pairing plus quadrupole Hamiltonian is used to demonstrate the physical properties that can be studied in this region. We calculate various static observables for both uncranked and cranked systems and show how the shape distribution evolves with temperature. We also introduce a discretization of the path integral that allows a more efficient Monte Carlo sampling.Comment: 11 pages, figures available upon request, Caltech Preprint No. MAP-16

    An assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediments and bivalves of the U.S. coastal zone

    NOAA’s Mussel Watch Program was designed to monitor the status and trends of chemical contamination of U.S. coastal waters, including the Great Lakes. The Program began in 1986 and is one of the longest running, continuous coastal monitoring programs that is national in scope. NOAA established Mussel Watch in response to a legislative mandate under Section 202 of Title II of the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act (MPRSA) (33 USC 1442). In addition to monitoring contaminants throughout the Nation’s coastal shores, Mussel Watch stores samples in a specimen bank so that trends can be determined retrospectively for new and emerging contaminants of concern. In recent years, flame retardant chemicals, known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have generated international concern over their widespread distribution in the environment, their potential to bioaccumulate in humans and wildlife, and concern for suspected adverse human health effects. The Mussel Watch Program, with additional funding provided by NOAA’s Oceans and Human Health Initiative, conducted a study of PBDEs in bivalve tissues and sediments. This report, which represents the first national assessment of PBDEs in the U.S. coastal zone, shows that they are widely distributed. PBDE concentrations in both sediment and bivalve tissue correlate with human population density along the U.S. coastline. The national and watershed perspectives given in this report are intended to support research, local monitoring, resource management, and policy decisions concerning these contaminants

    In search of new herbicide chemistries for the prairies

    Non-Peer ReviewedThere are a limited of herbicide groups for use in western Canada so there is a need introduce different modes of action to manage herbicide resistant weeds. In addition, many broadleaf crops such as chickpea have limited broadleaf weed control options. Sulfentrazone, a Group 14 PPO inhibitor has been screened in a number of broadleaf crops. Chickpea has exhibited excellent tolerance to sulfentrazone, while the tolerance of other broadleaf crops can be summarized as follows: sunflower and fababean (fair to good); field pea, and narrow-leaved lupin (fair); dry bean (poor) and lentil (very poor). Isoxaflutole is a Group 27 carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitor that may have potential for use in chickpea, tame buckwheat, and narrow-leaved lupin. Sulfentrazone effectively controls many broadleaf weeds but is weak on cruciferous weeds such as wild mustard. Isoxaflutole also controls a number of broadleaf weeds but does not control wild buckwheat. Both sulfentrazone and isoxaflutole are soil-applied herbicides with potential to carry-over and injure rotational crops. Preliminary results from field trials indicate that combined low rates of sulfentrazone and isoxaflutole can result in excellent broad spectrum weed control in chickpea. Carfentrazone-ethyl, a contact non-residual PPO inhibitor has been shown to be an effective pre-seed burndown partner for glyphosate. This would allow for the control of volunteer Roundup-ready canola prior to the seeding of broadleaf crops

    Optimizing nitrogen rates in Camelina sativa

    Non-Peer ReviewedCamelina is a new oilseed crop to western Canada with potential applications in cosmetics, human nutrition, and biofuel. Nitrogen recommendations for camelina production in Western Canada aren’t available. Field studies were conducted in 2008 and 2009 for 10 site years at locations in western Canada to determine the effect of nitrogen rate on seed yield. Depending on the experiment, nitrogen rates ranged from 0 to 200 kg ha-1. The join point (N rate at which yields plateau) for camelina were 111 to 116 kg ha-1, which is similar to other Brassica oilseed species
