    A Case Study of One Small Christian College Overcoming Decline and Implementing an Institutional Turnaround

    Numerous studies and national data show a growing number of small, private, Christian colleges face extreme difficulties, which often result in decline, followed by closure or merging with larger, higher education institutions. Attempting to overcome the loss of student revenue from a declining enrollment, many small colleges raise tuition prices, spend endowment funds, and overextend themselves with high debt payments. Countering the increased tuition prices, these colleges often increase scholarships and financial aid, which reduces available funds for other institutional needs. Other challenging issues include meeting accreditation standards, raising money for operational and capital needs, and the general public losing confidence in their perceived value. However, some small, private, Christian colleges overcome these issues of decline and are able to revitalize or turnaround. The purpose of this mixed methods, single case study was to understand how Seymore University overcame decline and implemented a turnaround while having an enrollment of fewer than 1,000 students and an endowment of less than $15 million. Specifically, this study investigated if Seymore University in 2008 or 2009 met four of the six indicators of decline as found in a 1993 study by Ruth Cowan of 16 small colleges, which included a prescription for turnaround. Furthermore, this study investigated if Seymore University successfully implemented a turnaround in 2010. Fifteen participants were interviewed in the qualitative portion of this study to answer five research questions regarding how Seymore University overcame decline and began to turnaround. Quantitative research for these questions was accomplished by examining enrollment data, financial data, expense data, and ratios, and related areas. The board of directors was key at slowing the decline at Seymore University by implementing extensive budget cuts and by hiring a new president. The new president is credited with refocusing their mission, training employees, improving communication, and creating internal systems, which achieved record enrollment and fundraising, increased degree programs, and engaged the community.     Ames life science telescience testbed evaluation

    Eight surrogate spaceflight mission specialists participated in a real-time evaluation of remote coaching using the Ames Life Science Telescience Testbed facility. This facility consisted of three remotely located nodes: (1) a prototype Space Station glovebox; (2) a ground control station; and (3) a principal investigator's (PI) work area. The major objective of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of telescience techniques and hardware to support three realistic remote coaching science procedures: plant seed germinator charging, plant sample acquisition and preservation, and remote plant observation with ground coaching. Each scenario was performed by a subject acting as flight mission specialist, interacting with a payload operations manager and a principal investigator expert. All three groups were physically isolated from each other yet linked by duplex audio and color video communication channels and networked computer workstations. Workload ratings were made by the flight and ground crewpersons immediately after completing their assigned tasks. Time to complete each scientific procedural step was recorded automatically. Two expert observers also made performance ratings and various error assessments. The results are presented and discussed

    Observations of a midlatitude squall line boundary layer wake

    Includes bibliographical references (pages 90-93).June 1987.Mesoscale pressure perturbations frequently observed with mesoscale convective systems (MCS) are examined with special emphasis on the characteristics, structure, lifecycle and driving mechanism of the "wake depression" found in the wake region of the convection. A severe squall line which traversed the OK PRE-STORM surface and upper air mesonetwork on 10-11 June 1985 is the focus of this observational study. Extensive surface, upper air and digitized radar data collected during the OK PRE-STORM field experiment were used for analysis. Various mesoanalyses of this squall line at the surface and aloft have allowed for intensive examination of three pressure features observed with this squall line: the mesohigh, wake depression and pre-squall mesolow. Their relationship to and interaction with other meteorological parameters such as precipitation, temperature, potential temperature and moisture are explored. Furthermore, the mesoscale system-relative "jets" observed with midlatitude squall lines are examined for their possible influence on the pressure field. The mesohigh develops quickly during the early growth of the squall line and precedes the wake depression by several hours. The predominant mesohigh is linked to the formation of a large cold pool which developed as a result of widespread hail and intense rainfall from a supercell ahead of the young squall line. Analyses show that the wake depression is not a uniform, stagnant feature behind the mesohigh but has embedded small-scale features, a distinct lifecycle and can undergo rapid intensification. The wake depression also is related to some aspects of the squall line's precipitation pattern. The low consistently "hugs" the back edge of the stratiform precipitation and is observed to split into two separate lows as the convective line splits. Additionally, the wake depression is a hydrostatic response to a layer of warm, dry air (produced by subsidence) found just above the surface. It is suggested that the wake depression is in part a surface manifestation of forced subsidence by the descending rear inflow jet.Sponsored by the National Science Foundation - ATM-8507961

    Completely antipersistent binary time series are sequences in which every time that an NN-bit string μ\mu appears, the sequence is continued with a different bit than at the last occurrence of μ\mu. This dynamics is phrased in terms of a walk on a DeBruijn graph, and properties of transients and cycles are studied. The predictability of the generated time series for an observer who sees a longer or shorter time window is investigated also for sequences that are not completely antipersistent.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
