    Optimal Calibration of PET Crystal Position Maps Using Gaussian Mixture Models

    A method is developed for estimating optimal PET gamma-ray detector crystal position maps, for arbitrary crystal configurations, based on a binomial distribution model for scintillation photon arrival. The approach is based on maximum likelihood estimation of Gaussian mixture model parameters using crystal position histogram data, with determination of the position map taken from the posterior probability boundaries between mixtures. This leads to minimum probability of error crystal identification under the assumed model

    Measures and models for angular correlation and angular-linear correlation

    Population models for dependence between two angular measurements and for dependence between an angular and a linear observation are proposed. The method of canonical correlations first leads to new population and sample measures of dependence in this latter situation. An example relating wind direction to the level of a pollutant is given. Next, applied to pairs of angular measurements, the method yields previously proposed sample measures in some special cases and a new sample measure in general

    A New Marine Ascomycete from Australia

    Most marine pyrenomycetes are lignicolous, but some are epiphytic on marine phanerogims and algae. Meyers (1957) listed 30 species of algae known to be attacked by these fungi. A number of reports dealing with marine ascomycetes on algal hosts appeared before 1900, the most noteworthy being those of Winter (1887), and Jones (1898). Cotton (1908) described a pyrenomycete on Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. and summarized previous reports of ascomycetes found on algae. Reed (1902) collected two species, and Sutherland, in a series of papers (1914-1916), reported several alga-infesting pyrenomycetes. More recently, a number of ascomycetes occurring on algae have been noted (Feldmann, 1957, 1958; Cribb & Herbert, 1954; Cribb & Cribb, 1955, 1960a, b; Wilson & Knoyle, 1961; Kohlmeyer, 1963). This report describes a heretofore unreported pyrenomycete collected from the marine alga, Ballia callitricha Ag. The material was obtained from Warrnambool, Victoria, in waters off southern Australia

    Spectral Properties of H-Reflex Recordings After an Acute Bout of Whole-Body Vibration

    Although research supports the use of whole-body vibration (WBV) to improve neuromuscular performance, the mechanisms for these improvements remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect ofWBV on the spectral properties of electrically evoked H-reflex recordings in the soleus (SOL) muscle. The H-reflex recordings were measured in the SOL muscle of 20 participants before and after a bout of WBV. The H-reflexes were evoked every 15 seconds for 150 seconds after WBV. A wavelet procedure was used to extract spectral data, which were then quantified with a principle components analysis. Resultant principle component scores were used for statistical analysis. The analysis extracted 1 principle component associated with the intensity of the myoelectric spectra and 1 principle component associated with the frequency. The scores of the principle component that were related to the myoelectric intensity were smaller at 30 and 60 milliseconds after WBV than before WBV. The WBV transiently decreased the intensity of myoelectric spectra during electrically evoked contractions, but it did not influence the frequency of the spectra. The decrease in intensity likely indicates a smaller electrically evoked muscle twitch response, whereas the lack of change in frequency would indicate a similar recruitment pattern of motor units before and after WBV

    Atomic resolution STM imaging of a twisted single-wall carbon nanotube

    We present atomically-resolved STM images of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) embedded in a crystalline nanotube rope. Although they may be interpreted as of a chiral nanotube, the images are more consistently explained a an achiral armchair tube with a quenched twist distortion. The existence of quenched twists in SWNTs in ropes might explain the fact that both as-grown bulk nanotube material and individual ropes have insulator-like conductivity at low temperature.Comment: preprint, 4 pages, and 4 gif figure

    Development of approach control system requirements with applications to a jet transport

    The development of requirements for an approach control system and example applications to a jet transport aircraft are presented. The material is divided into a general discussion of approach control requirements, and a specific application resulting in the design of three alternative longitudinal controllers. The point of view taken is that the essential features of the system structure are the feedbacks themselves, their equalization, and their combinations to create control commands. Use is made of the fact that for sucessful systems the possible feedback structures are very limited. They derive primarily from guidance, control, and regulation demands; and secondarily from dynamic response characteristics desired by the pilot. From the systems view it is the satisfaction of these requirements that is important rather than the means automatic, manual, or hygrid manual/automatic approach systems

    Exclusion Statistics in a trapped two-dimensional Bose gas

    We study the statistical mechanics of a two-dimensional gas with a repulsive delta function interaction, using a mean field approximation.
