Requirements Analysis of a Quad-Redundant Flight Control System

In this paper we detail our effort to formalize and prove requirements for the Quad-redundant Flight Control System (QFCS) within NASA's Transport Class Model (TCM). We use a compositional approach with assume-guarantee contracts that correspond to the requirements for software components embedded in an AADL system architecture model. This approach is designed to exploit the verification effort and artifacts that are already part of typical software verification processes in the avionics domain. Our approach is supported by an AADL annex that allows specification of contracts along with a tool, called AGREE, for performing compositional verification. The goal of this paper is to show the benefits of a compositional verification approach applied to a realistic avionics system and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the AGREE tool in performing this analysis.Comment: Accepted to NASA Formal Methods 201

A Multibiomarker Analysis of Pollutant Effects on Atlantic Stingray Populations in Florida’s St. Johns River

The goal of this study was to examine the potential health effects of organochlorine (OC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure on Atlantic stingray populations in Florida’s St. Johns River (SJR). Special emphasis was placed on identifying OC- and/or PAH-related effects in stingrays from areas of the lower (LSJR) and middle (MSJR) basins shown to possess elevated levels of these compounds, as well as characterizing baseline levels of pollutant exposure in the SJR shipping channel, which may be subjected to dredging in the near future, potentially resuspending and redistributing contaminated sediments and increasing pollutant-associated effects. To accomplish this, we measured OC and PAH biomarker levels in stingrays collected from contaminated and reference sites. We specifically examined the phase I detoxification enzyme, cytochrome P4501a1 (CYP1a1); the phase II detoxification enzymes, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and uridine 5’-diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase (UGT); fluorescent aromatic compounds, PAH bile metabolites; and lipid peroxidation (LPO), cell membrane damage. Biomarker values collected between 2014 and 2016 were compared by site. Detoxification enzyme activity and LPO values from individuals collected from the three MSJR lakes between 2002 and 2005 were compared to those collected between 2014 and 2016. The data suggested that biomarker values from the SJR were variable, with elevated levels from Lake Jesup. Compared to reference estuaries, the LSJR has low biomarker values. This indicates that residing in certain portions of the MSJR is detrimental to stingray health, while residing in the LSJR is not. Lake Monroe and Lake George biomarker levels indicated reduced contaminant input over time, whereas Lake Jesup biomarker levels suggested the opposite. This study has developed a baseline for biomarker levels in the LSJR, allowing for the identification of dredging-induced changes to the system, and has identified temporal changes in biomarker levels from three MSJR lakes

My Words Fly Up, My Thoughts Remain Below : Community and Penance in Early Modern English Drama

This dissertation examines the vexed relationship between Christian doctrine, practice, and community in English Renaissance drama due to the abandonment of the sacrament of auricular confession during the Protestant Reformation. I argue that many English Renaissance dramatists were sensitive to the vast ramifications of the Reformers\u27 theological understanding of penance, particularly in its emphasis upon a sinner\u27s ability to accomplish unmediated contrition, and to be psychologically and emotionally satisfied thereby. By desacramentalizing and interiorizing penitential practices, the Protestant understanding of penance fundamentally changed the ways in which communities dealt with sins. As this dissertation demonstrates, many of the plays from this period stage moments of penance that are problematic both for the repentant sinner and for the community in which the offender lives. Penitential practices are variously feigned, manipulated, perverted, or controlled by the state in many of these plays, often leading to the death of the penitent and the destruction of the community. The kneeling figure of the penitential Claudius in Shakespeare\u27sHamletexemplifies these representations of the struggle to accomplish repentance, and my dissertation proceeds to examine similar manifestations of these problems in the works of Campion, Marlowe, Beaumont and Fletcher, Middleton, Marston, Massinger, Webster, and Ford. The abruptness of the change in the religion of England would have inevitably caused great disruption in the people\u27s imaginative understanding of the sacred, and how an individual relates to the divine. I suggest that this disruption, particularly in the life of the community, was keenly felt by early modern English playwrights, and that they explore the problems relating to penance and the community in a wide variety of their plays

A Comparison of a Model College Advancement Program with the Public Relations Effort at South Dakota State University

This paper is concerned with the management--planning, implementing and evaluating--of programs and activities designed to advance the understanding and support of colleges. College efforts at wooing publics and winning their support have too often been limited to publicity. Since colleges opened their doors, they have had public relations problems and have made efforts to court various publics--even if that effort was a single conversation each year by the president. The news bureau was called on as a panacea for public relations needs. Even then the public relations of the institution could be thought of as the sum of all the impressions made by the institution and when alumni relations and fund raising became recognized facets of a public relations program--indeed when public relations was recognized as a management function--there still was no formal total program for controlling the impressions the institution made by participation in policy-making. This paper was written on the premise that any college public relations program that is organized without considering all publics and all impressions that accrue to the institution will fall short of what is needed today. Many studies have suggested such programs would be administratively awkward, hard to contain and to staff. This paper presents the advancement concept as an approach to planning, implementing, and evaluating a complete program of that nature. The institutional advancement program has never been spelled out or defined. This paper has been an effort to consider the publics, the public relations director, planning, public relations objectives and principles, public relations evolution and how these factors have made the advancement concept necessary as the approach best suited to today\u27s public relations problems in higher education.
