Establishing the boundaries: the hippocampal contribution to imagining scenes
When we visualize scenes, either from our own past or invented, we impose a viewpoint for our âmind's eyeâ and we experience the resulting image as spatially coherent from that viewpoint. The hippocampus has been implicated in this process, but its precise contribution is unknown. We tested a specific hypothesis based on the spatial firing properties of neurons in the hippocampal formation of rats, that this region supports the construction of spatially coherent mental images by representing the locations of the environmental boundaries surrounding our viewpoint. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we show that hippocampal activation increases parametrically with the number of enclosing boundaries in the imagined scene. In contrast, hippocampal activity is not modulated by a nonspatial manipulation of scene complexity nor to increasing difficulty of imagining the scenes in general. Our findings identify a specific computational role for the hippocampus in mental imagery and episodic recollection
Phase-space Analysis by Multiple Resonance-Frequency Identification: Applications to the LHC and LEP
Many beam-dynamical phenomena are studied, experimentally or computationally, by means of spectral analysis of a time-series of values of a dynamical variable. When the underlying dynamics is regular, the frequencies appearing in the spectrum are integer combinations of a small set of basic frequencies, e.g., the three tunes in the case of single-particle orbital dynamics. For well-known reasons, identification of the frequencies can be ambiguous or subjective in practice. We present an algorithm that overcomes these difficulties by exploiting theoretical bounds on the spectral power density to transform time series into sets of labelled resonance lines. In our examples, the time series are orbits obtained by tracking single particles from many initial conditions. The method has been applied to off-momentum LHC injection optics. This is a deterministic Hamiltonian system. A second application, to orbits with strong quantum fluctuations in LEP2, shows that it also works well in a noisy, dissipative system

Our experiments on viscous (Saffman-Taylor) fingering in Hele-Shaw channels
reveal several phenomena that were not observed in previous experiments. At low
flow rates, growing fingers undergo width fluctuations that intermittently
narrow the finger as they evolve. The magnitude of these fluctuations is
proportional to Ca^{-0.64}, where Ca is the capillary number, which is
proportional to the finger velocity. This relation holds for all aspect ratios
studied up to the onset of tip instabilities. At higher flow rates, finger
pinch-off and reconnection events are observed. These events appear to be
caused by an interaction between the actively growing finger and suppressed
fingers at the back of the channel. Both the fluctuation and pinch-off

The Deuterium to Hydrogen Abundance Ratio Towards the QSO SDSS1558-0031
We present a measurement of the D/H abundance ratio in a metal-poor damped
Lyman alpha (DLA) system along the sightline of QSO SDSS1558-0031. The DLA
system is at redshift z = 2.70262, has a neutral column density of
log(NHI)=20.67+/-0.05 cm^2, and a gas-phase metallicity [O/H]= -1.49 which
indicates that deuterium astration is negligible. Deuterium absorption is
observed in multiple Lyman series with a column density of
log(NDI)=16.19+/-0.04 cm^2, best constrained by the deuterium Lyman-11 line. We
measure log(D/H) = -4.48+/-0.06, which when combined with previous measurements
along QSO sightlines gives a best estimate of log(D/H) = -4.55+/-0.04, where
the 1-sigma error estimate comes from a jackknife analysis of the weighted
means. Using the framework of standard big bang nucleosynthesis, this value of
D/H translates into a baryon density of Omega_b h^2 = 0.0213 +/- 0.0013 +/-
0.0004 where the error terms represent the 1-sigma errors from D/H and the
uncertainties in the nuclear reaction rates respectively. Combining our new
measurement with previous measurements of D/H, we no longer find compelling

Probabilistic Analysis of a Greedy Heuristic for Euclidean Matching
Given a collection of n points in the plane, the Euclidean matching problem is the task of decomposing the collection into matched pairs connected by line segments in such a way as to minimize the sum of all the segment lengths. The greedy heuristic provides an approximate solution to the Euclidean matching problem by successively matching the two closest unmatched points. Inflation from D3-brane motion in the background of D5-branes
We study inflation arising from the motion of a BPS D3-brane in the
background of a stack of k parallel D5-branes. There are two scalar fields in
this set up-- (i) the radion field R, a real scalar field, and (ii) a complex
tachyonic scalar field chi living on the world volume of the open string
stretched between the D3 and D5 branes. We find that inflation is realized by
the potential of the radion field, which satisfies observational constraints
coming from the Cosmic Microwave Background. After the radion becomes of order
the string length scale l_s, the dynamics is governed by the potential of the
complex scalar field. Since this field has a standard kinematic term, reheating
can be successfully realized by the mechanism of tachyonic preheating with

The changing world of the temporary worker: the potential HR impact of legislation
Purpose
â Temporary workers have many human resource and labour market implications. These consequences are further influenced with the introduction of new legislation relating to temporary workers. The purpose of this article is to present research on the impacts of the legislation â Fixed Term Employees Regulations and Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations â on temporary workers in the labour force.
Design/methodology/approach
â Information from 24 Labour Force Surveys, conducted between December 1997 and November 2003, were analysed with two longitudinal Labour Force Surveys. Qualitative data was also gathered from six temporary worker employers and 17 agency workers.
Findings
â Analysis of data demonstrated that the utilisation of temporary workers had declined in the labour force: Temporary workers had decreased in real terms by 24 per cent and agency workers who were less regulated by only 11 per cent. Also, an increased takeâup of permanent work by temporary workers was found postâlegislation (27 per cent) compared with preâlegislation (22 per cent).
Research limitations/implications
â Some limitations exist in the study using National Statistics and qualitative data to analyse labour force dynamics. Further research is warranted in this area investigating how strategic decisions in utilising temporary workers are formed and how recent legislation has influenced these policies.
Practical implications
â Changes in temporary worker legislation have direct consequences to the labour force.
Originality/value
â The paper reveals the decline of temporary workers in the labour force between 1997 and 2003 and examines specific legislation, which may have influenced this phenomenon
The Keck+Magellan Survey for Lyman Limit Absorption I: The Frequency Distribution of Super Lyman Limit Systems
We present the results of a survey for super Lyman limit systems (SLLS;
defined to be absorbers with 19.0 <= log(NHI) <= 20.3 cm^-2) from a large
sample of high resolution spectra acquired using the Keck and Magellan
telescopes. Specifically, we present 47 new SLLS from 113 QSO sightlines. We
focus on the neutral hydrogen frequency distribution f(N,X) of the SLLS and its
moments, and compare these results with the Lyman-alpha forest and the damped
Lyman alpha systems (DLA; absorbers with log(NHI) >= 20.3 cm^-2). We find that
that f(N,X) of the SLLS can be reasonably described with a power-law of index
alpha = -1.43^{+0.15}_{-0.16} or alpha = -1.19^{+0.20}_{-0.21} depending on
whether we set the lower N(HI) bound for the analysis at 10^{19.0} cm^-2 or
10^{19.3}$ cm^-2, respectively. The results indicate a flattening in the slope
of f(N,X) between the SLLS and DLA. We find little evidence for redshift
evolution in the shape of f(N,X) for the SLLS over the redshift range of the
sample 1.68 < z < 4.47 and only tentative evidence for evolution in the zeroth
moment of f(N,X), the line density l_lls(X). We introduce the observable
distribution function O(N,X) and its moment, which elucidates comparisons of HI
absorbers from the Lyman-alpha through to the DLA. We find that a simple three
parameter function can fit O(N,X) over the range 17.0 <= log(NHI) <=22.0. We
use these results to predict that f(N,X) must show two additional inflections
below the SLLS regime to match the observed f(N,X) distribution of the
Lyman-alpha forest. Finally, we demonstrate that SLLS contribute a minor
fraction (~15%) of the universe's hydrogen atoms and, therefore, an even small

Reconstruction of contaminant trends in a salt wedge estuary with sediment cores dated using a multiple proxy approach
The Taunton River is a partially mixed tidal estuary in southeastern Massachusetts (USA) which has received significant contaminant inputs, yet little information exists on the history of discharge and the subsequent fate of these contaminants. Three sediment cores taken along a transect were analyzed, reconstructing the spatial and temporal trends of pollution in the estuary. A combination of radiometric dating, contaminant markers, and storm layers from major hurricanes were used to establish age models and sedimentation rates. Age estimates obtained from the different dating methods compared well, establishing an accurate history of contaminant release to the estuary. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were present in one core at depths corresponding to the early 1860s, earlier than previously established dates of introduction. Temporal and spatial trends of Cr, Cu, Hg and Pb indicated multiple sources of varying input to the river. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were present in each of the cores from the 1930s onward, with elevated levels still present in surficial sediments at several sites. A unique organic compound, Topanol, which was produced locally was used as a tracer to track contaminant transport in the river. Tracer data indicates that contaminants are still being transported and deposited to surficial sediments at high concentrations well after their discharge. This reconstruction demonstrates the utility of using multiple dating proxies where often the sole use of radiometric dating techniques is not an option and provides insights into the fate of contaminants discharged decades ago but continue to represent environmental risks
