    Two Suns in The Sky: Stellar Multiplicity in Exoplanet Systems

    We present results of a reconnaissance for stellar companions to all 131 radial-velocity-detected candidate extrasolar planetary systems known as of July 1, 2005. CPM companions were investigated using the multi-epoch DSS images, and confirmed by matching the trigonometric parallax distances of the primaries to companion distances estimated photometrically. We also attempt to confirm or refute companions listed in the Washington Double Star Catalog, the Catalogs of Nearby Stars, in Hipparcos results, and in Duquennoy & Mayor (1991). Our findings indicate that a lower limit of 30 (23%) of the 131 exoplanet systems have stellar companions. We report new stellar companions to HD 38529 and HD 188015, and a new candidate companion to HD 169830. We confirm many previously reported stellar companions, including six stars in five systems that are recognized for the first time as companions to exoplanet hosts. We have found evidence that 20 entries in the Washington Double Star Catalog are not gravitationally bound companions. At least three, and possibly five, of the exoplanet systems reside in triple star systems. Three exoplanet systems have potentially close-in stellar companions ~ 20 AU away from the primary. Finally, two of the exoplanet systems contain white dwarf companions.     The Solar Neighborhood. XIX. Discovery and Characterization of 33 New Nearby White Dwarf Systems

    We present spectra for 33 previously unclassified white dwarf systems brighter than V = 17 primarily in the southern hemisphere. Of these new systems, 26 are DA, 4 are DC, 2 are DZ, and 1 is DQ. We suspect three of these systems are unresolved double degenerates. We obtained VRI photometry for these 33 objects as well as for 23 known white dwarf systems without trigonometric parallaxes, also primarily in the southern hemisphere. For the 56 objects, we converted the photometry values to fluxes and fit them to a spectral energy distribution using the spectroscopy to determine which model to use (i.e. pure hydrogen, pure helium, or metal-rich helium), resulting in estimates of effective temperature and distance. Eight of the new and 12 known systems are estimated to be within the NStars and Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS) horizons of 25 pc, constituting a potential 18% increase in the nearby white dwarf sample. Trigonometric parallax determinations are underway via CTIOPI for these 20 systems. One of the DCs is cool so that it displays absorption in the near infrared. Using the distance determined via trigonometric parallax, we are able to constrain the model-dependent physical parameters and find that this object is most likely a mixed H/He atmosphere white dwarf similar to other cool white dwarfs identified in recent years with significant absorption in the infrared due to collision-induced absorptions by molecular hydrogen.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa

    Examining Learning Styles and Perceived Benefits of Analogical Problem Construction on SQL Knowledge Acquisition

    The demand for Information Systems (IS) graduates with expertise in Structured Query Language (SQL) and database management is vast and projected to increase as ‘big data’ becomes ubiquitous. To prepare students to solve complex problems in a data-driven world, educators must explore instructional strategies to help link prior knowledge to new knowledge. This study examined learning styles and the perceived benefits of analogical problem construction on SQL knowledge acquisition. The data collected from 80 participants suggests there is a perceived positive benefit to using analogical problem construction for learning introductory database concepts. The learning style of the majority of students in the sample is ‘Active-Sensing-Visual-Sequential.’ However, learning styles were not related to student perceived impact of analogical problem construction to understand database concepts. Student analogies were collected for a variety of SQL concepts; noteworthy examples are highlighted. While results related to learning styles are intriguing, the most promising path for further exploration (for both research and practice) is the use of analogy problem construction in Information Systems educational environments

    The Solar Neighborhood XVII: Parallax Results from the CTIOPI 0.9m Program -- Twenty New Members of the RECONS 10 Parsec Sample

    Astrometric measurements for 25 red dwarf systems are presented, including the first definitive trigonometric parallaxes for 20 systems within 10 pc of the Sun, the horizon of the RECONS sample. The three nearest systems that had no previous trigonometric parallaxes (other than perhaps rough preliminary efforts) are SO 0253+1652 (3.84 +/- 0.04 pc, the 23rd nearest system), SCR 1845-6357 AB (3.85 +/- 0.02 pc, 24th), and LHS 1723 (5.32 +/- 0.04 pc, 56th). In total, seven of the systems reported here rank among the nearest 100 stellar systems. Supporting photometric and spectroscopic observations have been made to provide full characterization of the systems, including complete VRIJHK photometry and spectral types. A study of the variability of 27 targets reveals six obvious variable stars, including GJ 1207, for which we observed a flare event in the V band that caused it to brighten by 1.7 mag. Improved parallaxes for GJ 54 AB and GJ 1061, both important members of the 10 pc sample, are also reported. Definitive parallaxes for GJ 1001 A, GJ 633, and GJ 2130 ABC, all of which have been reported to be within 10 pc, indicate that they are beyond 10 pc. From the analysis of systems with (previously) high trigonometric parallax errors, we conclude that parallaxes with errors in excess of 10 mas are insufficiently reliable for inclusion in the RECONS sample. The cumulative total of new additions to the 10 pc sample since 2000 is now 34 systems -- 28 by the RECONS team and six by other groups. This total represents a net increase of 16% in the number of stellar systems reliably known to be nearer than 10 pc.Comment: 33 pages, including 3 figures and 3 table

    The impact of ractopamine hydrochloride on growth and metabolism, with special consideration of its role on nitrogen balance and water utilization in pork production

    Two experiments were conducted to determine if ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) could improve nutrient utilization and decrease water utilization, thus reducing the environmental footprint of hog operations. The tissue accretion experiment used comparative slaughter involving 120 barrows (95 ± 3 kg of BW), including 12 assigned to an initial slaughter group; the remaining pigs were slaughtered at 108 or 120 kg. Growth performance and nutrient retention were determined. The 15-d metabolism experiment consisted of 54 pigs (95 ± 3 kg of BW). Growth performance, feed and water intake, and urine and fecal output were measured. The metabolism experiment used 9 dietary treatments arranged as a 3 × 3 factorial: 3 quantities of RAC (0, 5, and 10 mg/kg) and 3 standardized ileal digestible-Lys:DE ratios (1.73, 2.14, and 2.63 g/Mcal of DE). The tissue accretion study was designed as a 3 × 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments using the same 9 dietary treatments to include slaughter BW (108 and 120 kg of BW) as an additional factor. In the tissue accretion experiment, RAC had no effect on ADG, ADFI, or G:F (P \u3e 0.10). With increased Lys, G:F improved (P = 0.029), but not ADG or ADFI (P \u3e 0.10). Protein deposition rates increased numerically (P = 0.11); water deposition rates increased (P = 0.050), whereas lipid deposition tended to decrease with RAC inclusion (P = 0.055). With greater RAC and Lys, the pigs had improved ADG (P = 0.002) and G:F (P \u3c 0.001) in the metabolism experiment. Daily water intake (P = 0.017.) and water output (P = 0.033) decreased with RAC inclusion. Lysine inclusion did not alter the water balance (P \u3e 0.10). Urinary N excretion (P \u3c 0.001), total N excretion (P = 0.003), and the urine N:fecal N ratio (P \u3c 0.001) decreased with the addition of RAC; fecal N (P = 0.008) increased with RAC inclusion. Retention of N improved with addition of RAC to the diet (P = 0.003). With greater dietary Lys, fecal N was reduced (P \u3c 0.001). The pigs fed the 2.14 g of Lys/Mcal tended to have the least urinary N (P = 0.069) and total N excretion (P = 0.086) and to have the greatest N retention (P = 0.086) and urinary N:fecal N ratio (P = 0.009). A RAC × Lys interaction was observed for N digestibility (P = 0.001), excretion (P = 0.001), and retention (P = 0.002) and for fecal (P = 0.001) and urinary N (P = 0.036). By improving N and water utilization in finishing pigs, RAC-containing diets supplemented with sufficient Lys can reduce N excretion into the environment from swine facilities

    Using gene expression data to identify certain gastro-intestinal diseases

    BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are considered to be of autoimmune origin, but the etiology of irritable bowel syndrome remains elusive. Furthermore, classifying patients into irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel diseases can be difficult without invasive testing and holds important treatment implications. Our aim was to assess the ability of gene expression profiling in blood to differentiate among these subject groups. METHODS: Transcript levels of a total of 45 genes in blood were determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We applied three separate analytic approaches; one utilized a scoring system derived from combinations of ratios of expression levels of two genes and two different support vector machines. RESULTS: All methods discriminated different subject cohorts, irritable bowel syndrome from control, inflammatory bowel disease from control, irritable bowel syndrome from inflammatory bowel disease, and ulcerative colitis from Crohn’s disease, with high degrees of sensitivity and specificity. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest these approaches may provide clinically useful prediction of the presence of these gastro-intestinal diseases and syndromes

    The Solar Neighborhood X: New Nearby Stars in the Southern Sky and Accurate Photometric Distance Estimates for Red Dwarfs

    Photometric VRI and spectroscopic (6000-9500 A) observations of high proper motion stars discovered during the first phase of the SuperCOSMOS RECONS (SCR) search are used to estimate accurate distances to eight new nearby red dwarfs, including probable 10 pc sample members SCR 1845-6357 (M8.5V at 4.6 pc), the binary SCR 0630-7643AB (M6.0VJ at 7.0 pc), and SCR 1138-7721 (M5.0V at 9.4 pc). Distance estimates are determined using a suite of new photometric color-Mk relations defined using a robust set of nearby stars with accurate VRIJHK photometry and trigonometric parallaxes. These relations are utilized, with optical and infrared photometry, to estimate distances on a uniform system (generally good to 15%) for two additional samples of red nearby star candidates: several recently discovered members of the solar neighborhood, and known faint stars with proper motions in excess of 1.0"/yr south of DEC = -57.5. Of those without accurate trigonometric parallax measurements, there are five stars in the first sample and three in the second that are likely to be within 10 pc. The two nearest are SO 0253+1652 (M7.0V at 3.7 pc) and DEN 1048-3956 (M8.5V at 4.5 pc). When combined with SCR 1845-6357, these three stars together represent the largest increase in the 5 pc sample in several decades. Red spectra are presented for the red dwarfs and types are given on the RECONS standard spectral system. Red spectra are also given for two new nearby white dwarfs for which we estimate distances from the photometry of less than 20 pc -- WD 0141-675 (LHS 145, 9.3 pc) and SCR 2012-5956 (17.4 pc).     WISEA J041451.67–585456.7 and WISEA J181006.18–101000.5: The First Extreme T-type Subdwarfs?

    We present the discoveries of WISEA J041451.67−585456.7 and WISEA J181006.18−101000.5, two low-temperature (1200–1400 K), high proper motion T-type subdwarfs. Both objects were discovered via their high proper motion (>0".5 yr⁻Âč); WISEA J181006.18−101000.5 as part of the NEOWISE proper motion survey and WISEA J041451.67−585456.7 as part of the citizen science project Backyard Worlds; Planet 9. We have confirmed both as brown dwarfs with follow-up near-infrared spectroscopy. Their spectra and near-infrared colors are unique among known brown dwarfs, with some colors consistent with L-type brown dwarfs and other colors resembling those of the latest-type T dwarfs. While no forward model consistently reproduces the features seen in their near-infrared spectra, the closest matches suggest very low metallicities ([Fe/H] â©œ −1), making these objects likely the first examples of extreme subdwarfs of the T spectral class (esdT). WISEA J041451.67−585456.7 and WISEA J181006.18−101000.5 are found to be part of a small population of objects that occupy the "substellar transition zone," and have the lowest masses and effective temperatures of all objects in this group
