FLUORINATED EMITTER MOLECULES FOR TRIPLET-TRIPLET ANNIHILATION UP-CONVERSION MEDIA

This thesis details the synthesis, characterisation and photophysical properties of various fluorinated emitters for triplet-triplet annhilation up-conversion systems. The theory and mechanism of TTAUC is evaluated and the molecular design of the annihilating emitter molecule reviewed to allow improvement of the external up-conversion quantum yield and overall energy efficiency of the process. Three main series of chromaphores were investigated, based on diphenylanthracenes, bisphenylperylenes, and 3,5,8-triphenylBODIPYs. These were synthesised by metal catalysed aryl-aryl coupling (Suzuki-Miyaura) or nucleophilic substitution reactions and, when paired with appropriate sensitizing molecules, allowed the up-conversion of green to blue; red to green; and near IR/red to orange respectively. The effect of increasing fluorination on the ease of synthesis and photophysical properties of these emitter systems was studied with a view to their application in up-conversion systems. Fluorinated emitter molecules were shown to be highly resistant to degradation by UV light compared to their non-fluorinated analogues. The up-conversion ability of these systems was evaluated and novel fluorinated BODIPY based dyes were produced that have high fluorescence quantum yields of over 90%. Finally the up-conversion of up-converting nanoparticles incorporating fluorinated emitters was evaluated

Urban (R)evolutions: Museums, Spectacle, and Development in Reform Era China

Over the past thirty years, China’s museum sector has experienced exponential growth with the expansion of thousands of new museums, both public and private. This paper seeks to understand this growth as an urban phenomenon that is simultaneously reconfiguring urban space and citizen subjectivities by framing the emergence of new and increasingly spectacular exhibitory institutions in China within the context of political, economic, and cultural policy shifts. Through the examination of the evolution of the museum in China and its symbolic relevance from its origins in an era of semi-colonialism into the contemporary period and recent trends of property-led redevelopment, I argue that museums have come to represent assertions of power and modernity built into the urban landscape. As a result, I assert that these institutions have emerged as critical influences on the configuration of the contemporary Chinese city and national identity, guided by and ongoing legacies of domestic policy and the pursuit of global recognition through culture, spectacle, and urban development

Tiered Technologies of Power: Subject-making in China through Electronic Censorship

Since its inception and rise to wide-spread popularity, the internet has provided new opportunities for communication and configured global connectivity possibilities and information sharing. However, with this technological revolution, new and interesting regulatory challenges have emerged. With this paper, I build on Foucauldian understandings of governmentality to examine internet censorship in China within the global context, arguing that these issues of internet censorship in China represent an important example of the emergence of new techniques of governing that stem from new, globalized threats to state control. As a fundamentally global network, the internet ranks among one of the most pressing of these threats, requiring new regulatory practices in both authoritarian and non-authoritarian regimes. This paper argues that as a result, new, decentralized regulatory practices have emerged to augment existing centralized techniques of control and, in the process, constructed tiered technologies of power through which subjects are produced and governed

Balancing Projects with Society and the Environment: A Project, Programme and Portfolio Approach

AbstractIssues such as global climate change, poverty & inequity, and the unsustainable use of resources are driving organisations to incorporate the principles of sustainable development into strategy and operations. Recently project management has drawn criticism of lacking sufficient governance to respond to such issues and the local interpretation and lessons learned have had little success in addressing this. Whilst sustainability principles can be actively influenced, encouraged and monitored through project portfolio programme and project management, there are often problems with translating vision and strategy into project practice. Here we suggest that portfolio and programme management presents an opportunity to integrate visionary and strategic sustainability with operational sustainability. Moreover a programme and portfolio approach can lead to enhanced opportunity to share sustainability practice between projects Therefore sustainability has to be an integrated part of Portfolio, Programme and Project processes to support and achieve the objectives of an organisation. Here the governance of organisational practice and the triple bottom line interlinks the processes to support the operational strategy of an organisation
