    Abstract: This paper describes the development of a fiscal impact tool for New Hampshire communities (HT -4-NH). FIT -4-NH belongs to a family of computergenerated fiscal impact assessment models designed to estimate the impacts to local government revenues and expenditures that result from economic changes. In the past, work in this area has centered on the completion of countylevel models for the midwestern states. FIT-4-NH is unique in that it was designed for rural community-level use in the northern New England region of the country

    Nanoparticle Networks Reduce the Flammability of Polymer Nanocomposites

    Synthetic polymer materials are rapidly replacing more traditional inorganic materials such as metals and natural polymeric materials such as wood. Since these novel materials are flammable, they require modifications to decrease their flammability through the addition of flame-retardant (FR) compounds. Recently, environmental regulation has restricted the use of some halogenated FR additives, initiating a search for alternative FR additives. Nanoparticle fillers are highly attractive for this purpose since they can simultaneously improve both the physical and flammability properties of the polymer nanocomposite. We show that carbon nanotubes can surpass nano-clays as effective FR additives if they form a jammed network structure within the polymer matrix, such that the material as a whole behaves rheologically like a gel. We find this kind of network formation for a variety of highly extended carbon-based nanoparticles: single and multi-walled nanotubes, as well as carbon nanofibers

    Duration of adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer

    BACKGROUND Since 2004, a regimen of 6 months of treatment with oxaliplatin plus a fluoropyrimidine has been standard adjuvant therapy in patients with stage III colon cancer. However, since oxaliplatin is associated with cumulative neurotoxicity, a shorter duration of therapy could spare toxic effects and health expenditures. METHODS We performed a prospective, preplanned, pooled analysis of six randomized, phase 3 trials that were conducted concurrently to evaluate the noninferiority of adjuvant therapy with either FOLFOX (fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin) or CAPOX (capecitabine and oxaliplatin) administered for 3 months, as compared with 6 months. The primary end point was the rate of disease-free survival at 3 years. Noninferiority of 3 months versus 6 months of therapy could be claimed if the upper limit of the two-sided 95% confidence interval of the hazard ratio did not exceed 1.12. RESULTS After 3263 events of disease recurrence or death had been reported in 12,834 patients, the noninferiority of 3 months of treatment versus 6 months was not confirmed in the overall study population (hazard ratio, 1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00 to 1.15). Noninferiority of the shorter regimen was seen for CAPOX (hazard ratio, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.85 to 1.06) but not for FOLFOX (hazard ratio, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.26). In an exploratory analysis of the combined regimens, among the patients with T1, T2, or T3 and N1 cancers, 3 months of therapy was noninferior to 6 months, with a 3-year rate of disease-free survival of 83.1% and 83.3%, respectively (hazard ratio, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.90 to 1.12). Among patients with cancers that were classified as T4, N2, or both, the disease-free survival rate for a 6-month duration of therapy was superior to that for a 3-month duration (64.4% vs. 62.7%) for the combined treatments (hazard ratio, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.23; P=0.01 for superiority). CONCLUSIONS Among patients with stage III colon cancer receiving adjuvant therapy with FOLFOX or CAPOX, noninferiority of 3 months of therapy, as compared with 6 months, was not confirmed in the overall population. However, in patients treated with CAPOX, 3 months of therapy was as effective as 6 months, particularly in the lower-risk subgroup. (Funded by the National Cancer Institute and others.

    Hypertonic saline reduces inflammation and enhances the resolution of oleic acid induced acute lung injury

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hypertonic saline (HTS) reduces the severity of lung injury in ischemia-reperfusion, endotoxin-induced and ventilation-induced lung injury. However, the potential for HTS to modulate the resolution of lung injury is not known. We investigated the potential for hypertonic saline to modulate the evolution and resolution of oleic acid induced lung injury.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Adult male Sprague Dawley rats were used in all experiments. <b><it>Series 1 </it></b>examined the potential for HTS to reduce the severity of evolving oleic acid (OA) induced acute lung injury. Following intravenous OA administration, animals were randomized to receive isotonic (Control, n = 12) or hypertonic saline (HTS, n = 12), and the extent of lung injury assessed after 6 hours. <b><it>Series 2 </it></b>examined the potential for HTS to enhance the resolution of oleic acid (OA) induced acute lung injury. Following intravenous OA administration, animals were randomized to receive isotonic (Control, n = 6) or hypertonic saline (HTS, n = 6), and the extent of lung injury assessed after 6 hours.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In <b><it>Series I</it></b>, HTS significantly reduced bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) neutrophil count compared to Control [61.5 ± 9.08 versus 102.6 ± 11.89 × 10<sup>3</sup> cells.ml<sup>-1</sup>]. However, there were no between group differences with regard to: A-a O2 gradient [11.9 ± 0.5 vs. 12.0 ± 0.5 KPa]; arterial PO2; static lung compliance, or histologic injury. In contrast, in <b><it>Series 2</it></b>, hypertonic saline significantly reduced histologic injury and reduced BAL neutrophil count [24.5 ± 5.9 versus 46.8 ± 4.4 × 10<sup>3</sup> cells.ml<sup>-1</sup>], and interleukin-6 levels [681.9 ± 190.4 versus 1365.7 ± 246.8 pg.ml<sup>-1</sup>].</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings demonstrate, for the first time, the potential for HTS to reduce pulmonary inflammation and enhance the resolution of oleic acid induced lung injury.</p

    Using differential mobility spectrometry to measure ion solvation: An examination of the roles of solvents and ionic structures in separating quinoline-based drugs

    Understanding the mechanisms and energetics of ion solvation is critical in many scientific areas. Here, we present a methodlogy for studying ion solvation using differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) coupled to mass spectrometry. While in the DMS cell, ions experience electric fields established by a high frequency asymmetric waveform in the presence of a desired pressure of water vapor. By observing how a specific ion's behavior changes between the high- and low-field parts of the waveform, we gain knowledge about the aqueous microsolvation of that ion. In this study, we applied DMS to investigate the aqueous microsolvation of protonated quinoline-based drug candidates. Owing to their low binding energies with water, the clustering propensity of 8-substituted quinolinium ions was less than that of the 6- or 7-substituted analogues. We attribute these differences to the steric hinderance presented by subtituents in the 8-position. In addition, these experimental DMS results were complemented by extensive computational studies that determined cluster structures and relative thermodynamic stabilities.We gratefully acknowledge high performance computing support from the SHARCNET consortium of Compute Canada.     Pleomorphic adenoma, also known as mixed tumor, is a benign tumor which typically presents as a painless and persistent mass. The majority of pleomorphic adenomas involve the salivary glands, most commonly the parotid gland. Other sites include breast and skin. It is a rare tumor in the vulva. In this article we are reporting a case of pleomorphic adenoma of labia with characteristic pathologic and clinical findings, as reminder of a common benign neoplasm occurring with rare locality

    Energy spectra of fractional quantum Hall systems in the presence of a valence hole

    The energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the fractional quantum Hall regime interacting with an optically injected valence band hole is studied as a function of the filling factor ν\nu and the separation dd between the electron and hole layers. The response of the 2DEG to the hole changes abruptly at dd of the order of the magnetic length λ\lambda. At d<λd<\lambda, the hole binds electrons to form neutral (XX) or charged (XX^-) excitons, and the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum probes the lifetimes and binding energies of these states rather than the original correlations of the 2DEG. The ``dressed exciton'' picture (in which the interaction between an exciton and the 2DEG was proposed to merely enhance the exciton mass) is questioned. Instead, the low energy states are explained in terms of Laughlin correlations between the constituent fermions (electrons and XX^-'s) and the formation of two-component incompressible fluid states in the electron--hole plasma. At d>2λd>2\lambda, the hole binds up to two Laughlin quasielectrons (QE) of the 2DEG to form fractionally charged excitons hhQEn_n. The previously found ``anyon exciton'' hhQE3_3 is shown to be unstable at any value of dd. The critical dependence of the stability of different hhQEn_n complexes on the presence of QE's in the 2DEG leads to the observed discontinuity of the PL spectrum at ν=13\nu={1\over3} or 23{2\over3}.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, submitted to PR

    Expert Premier League soccer managers’ use of transformational leadership behaviours and attitude towards sport integrity: An intrinsic case study

    The present study is the first to examine transformational leadership behaviours and integrity attitudes of expert, Premier League and International level football managers. To provide a rich, detailed exploration of the expert managers’ experiences, a qualitative approach was adopted utilising holistic content analysis. Constructed narratives revealed that the key behaviours demonstrated were inspirational messages or team talks (i.e. inspirational motivation), empathy (i.e. individualised consideration), introducing new training methods (i.e. intellectual stimulation), using exemplar players (i.e. appropriate role modelling), and goal setting (i.e. high performance expectations). However, the use and effect of such behaviours varied greatly between managers. Each of the managers also claimed to have been willing to “bend the rules” as a player and frequently used euphemistic labels to describe such behaviour. However, upon entering management, all three managers claimed to have adjusted such attitudes without providing an explanation for this
