Saving the future: Steele Rudd and Macgregor Professorial Lecture, 21 April 2010 [Speech]

In his speech titled ‘Saving the Future’, Professor Cole will propose that a revolution which puts sustainability front and centre is needed to turn around this unmitigated environmental catastrophe. 'If we are to save our future and that of generations to come, we will need more than new laptops in the classroom. With close to two thirds of the Earth’s ecosystems already seriously degraded and climate change and loss of biodiversity emerging threats to life as we know it, the 21st century will be lived in a very different way. 'Sooner rather than later, we will have to deal fundamentally with the discipline of living within the limits of the planet’s capacity to sustain life. The biggest question of our time is can we live sustainably and the biggest question facing universities is can we research and educate people on how to live sustainably

    Cones in homotopy probability theory

This note defines cones in homotopy probability theory and demonstrates that a cone over a space is a reasonable replacement for the space. The homotopy Gaussian distribution in one variable is revisited as a cone on the ordinary Gaussian.Comment: 8 pages. Missing reference adde

Profiling the Evolving Characteristics and Needs for Risk Management Education of Commercial Agricultural Producers in the Intermountain West

The rural West has experienced dramatic demographic and economic transformations during the past several decades. The makeup of farm operators has changed significantly, and enterprises are increasingly at greater production, financial, marketing, human, and institutional risks. Given the importance of university outreach education to the future of agriculture, a better understanding of farm operators, including what they perceive to be the greatest threats to their operations, is required to effectively design risk management education. This project has resulted in improved understanding of agricultural producer needs for risk management education, through the results of two surveys completed over the past three years. These surveys targeted both small (<50,000agsales)andlarge(>50,000 ag sales) and large (>50,000 ag sales) operators across three western states (WY, CO, and AZ). Results are generally much more descriptive of the educational needs, as well as suggesting mechanisms for delivery for Extension workers and others than the results available from the general agricultural census. ASSESSMENT OF WIC COST-CONTAINMENT PRACTICES; EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    Get PDF
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides both nutrition education and supplemental foods containing nutrients determined by nutritional research to be lacking in the diets of pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants, and children. State WIC agencies have implemented practices designed to reduce the cost of food packages containing these prescribed foods. For instance, one of the WIC program's primary cost-saving practices is negotiating rebate contracts with manufacturers of infant formula. Additional practices include limiting authorized vendors to stores with lower food prices; limiting approved brands, package sizes, forms, or prices; and negotiating rebates with food manufacturers or suppliers. There is concern that these practices may inadvertently counter the program's goal of providing supplemental foods and nutrition education. Based on a review of cost-containment practices in six States, including interviews with the various stakeholders and analysis of WIC administrative files, the study draws three major conclusions: (1) costcontainment practices reduced average food package costs by 0.2 to 21.4 percent, depending on practices implemented and local conditions; (2) the cost-containment practices had few adverse outcomes for WIC participants; and (3) administrative costs of the practices were low, averaging about 1.5 percent of food package savings.
